IM phoned this morning with an update:
  • His temp has come down from original intake. Which is good.
  • His RBC went up over night to 26% from 25% which is good.
  • Morning BG was 9.7 - which not bad with no insulin for 2 days.
  • Breathing is normal and he has been out of the oxygen cage for about 24 hours now.
  • He had diarrhea yesterday afternoon but nothing since. IM not sure if IBD flare or sometimes he said with lung issues the digestive tract does a bit of a wobble. Either way, will need to watch that. Which explains the poop on his tail last night.
  • He hasn't eaten anything since yesterday morning. So, I get to bring him home this afternoon, but if he doesn't eat within 24 hours, I have to take him back possibly for a feeding tube. Suggested maybe allowing me to syringe feed him and see if we can get his tummy/guts moving again. Plus he will be home and I can try different things. I heard about that liver slurry - what is that? Something good to try to get some needed calories and nutrients in?
  • His potassium is low...IM thinks this is due to him not really eating. But he didn't seem confident in that either. He is giving him a supplement this morning and will check on it again before releasing.

Otherwise from my visit last night..he cuddled and purred. He seemed weak and disorientated. His tummy was upset, I could tell by his meow and the way he wanted to cuddle.

The bad side...we still don't know what or why? He has signs of an infection but IM can't really determine where. Maybe it was just a bad IBD flare, I know with my Chron's with a flare my HR and BP go up, I have a hard time breathing and I get a fever. He doesn't think it is asthma, though there is signs of inflamed bronchial tubes. So he is hesitant on doing ongoing asthma therapy. He told me to give him a few hours to "cook" things over and see what he would like to do.

He will release Jones today, in the early afternoon he said.

Thank you for all the hugs and well wishes. They were needed and I am grateful to get them.

Fantastic news! I am sure Jones will do so much better at home. I agree that trying the assist feed first is a good idea to try to get his gut moving. I hope they clean to poo off for you before he goes home. Scritches to Jones..

Great news that he's going home! I'm glad your IM vet is giving all options serious thought instead of making quick, definitive pronouncements. :)

I'm so glad Jones is coming home. He'll be happy to be there and hopefully eat for you. Here is the link to the liver shake if you decide you want to try it:

Sending prayers.
Thank you for that!

Just got a call. Get to pick him up in 2 hours. He ate for them and IM has cooked out a recipe apparently on what he would like to do (I swear this guy is from the UK, his humor seems so like some friends of mine from there). They gave him EN dry food. But he ate! So I will take that and work with it. Don't even want to know the carb on that! Will be bringing some home...and hopefully transitioning to his usual food.

He has now been off insulin for 2 and half days I am assuming his depot is pretty much drained at this point with the low dose he was on. Figured I would get him home. Make sure he keeps eating. Give his other meds as directed and test his BG's over the next couple of days and then go from there on the insulin unless some experts have other suggestions.

I am so happy he is coming home!:):):):):):):woot::woot::woot::woot::woot:

Baby steps....get Jones home, then like you say, make sure he keeps eating, and figure out the rest around meds, and getting him back on track with his BG. Oh, and make sure you squeeze in some nice quality snuggle time too :bighug:

I missed the news that Jones was in the hospital, but I'm glad he's coming home. I like the sound of that vet, and I think your plan is very sensible.

A word of caution on the liver shake: it's very rich and too much at once could cause tummy upset. It did with Minka. Be sure you get some Cerenia and/or Ondansetron to give at home.

Sending loads of appy and healing vines.

So happy to hear that Jones is coming home. Hope he continues to get stronger and feel better with the comforts of home. :bighug:

He has been home for about 4 hours now. I kept him in my bedroom to settle with some food, water and litter box for about 2 hours. He has a lot of pee! All those fluids. He is still wobbly though, not sure what that is about. He is meowing like crazy and very antsy...I don't like the mirtz...but that is what they gave him for the next 3 weeks. Keep to the plan, keep to the plan. Maybe just till check up and ask about changing back to the cypro.

I picked up both the dry and wet EN to see how he does with that. He ate about 1/4 c of dry and 1/8th can of wet since coming home. He has lost a lot of weight since going in. He is all skinny butt grey cat again..before he had at least a bit of padding on his butt end. He doesn't have much muscle left after all the issues before and he didn't gain any muscle back. Vet told me that would happen,.

I let him out of the room and he came for some cuddles and then went to his usual cat tree. That wasn't good enough so went to my bed. We just laid down for an hour and just...were being together. Can't hear anything with my ear to his side...his purr seems the same. Breathing seems ok.

We have an antibiotic to give in the morning, otherwise all meds are the same.

Giggle of the afternoon - under list of meds...glargine insulin - 1 drop.

Also noted on intake that he had a grade II heart murmer. I will need to follow up on that. There is no further notes on it the discharge notes.

Did ask for all blood work results and just got the BG's and a couple others but the bill has two complete panels done. Will be phoning to get those as well.

End result - suspect that he had an acute inhalation or allergic reaction that caused an possible IBD flare. But internal medicine is "not an exact science". Love this guy.

Glad he is home and doing relatively well. Give him a little time. Really glad to hear he is eating and using the LB. Both good signs. :bighug:

Mr. Jones, you take it easy and get better. :cat:

He didn't eat last night but is very cuddly. I did the normal routine of feed, test this morning....he ate two bites of the canned food and maybe a bite or two of kibble. He is interested but....no lip smacking....I just think is gut is not working at the moment which sends a signal you are not hungry. I know that feeling too well lately. I can use logic on myself to say eat a little something to give you energy but cats....well they have their own logic.

His BG's are going up now. Gave him token 1 drop...just to get the routine back established.

I am thinking this was a severe IBD flare/allergic reaction to something he ate. Just the way he is acting is so much like when we first started this journey.

:bighug:I like hearing he's being a cuddle monster. Sounds like a little more time and he'll get back to normal. You must be exhausted. Hope you are both feeling much better very soon.

Have you tried syringe feeding? When Gizmo was so, so sick, I always gave him the chance to eat on his own. Fixed his bowl and sat him in front of it (a couple of time usually) but if he didn't eat he got it via syringe/force feeding. After about three days of that, I put his bowl down and had to run to the store and was going to force feed when I got home - hubby texted me a picture of the empty food bowl when I was at the grocery store. I am sure people thought I was crazy because I was standing in the frozen food section bawling - lol.

Good eating vibes heading your way.

but if he didn't eat he got it via syringe/force feeding
I thought of it....using the EN and just watering it right down. It is pretty stiff. Or maybe pick up some AD...need a syringe...

Was going to stop on the way home.. and see if I can find some new food. Anything associated with not feeling well is usually on the no fly list with Jones after.

Will see what he has eaten today. The day seems better than at night. If nothing will phone vets to get the syringe and AD and send DS over tomorrow morning to get it.

And he is starting to say ok to whiskas treats again (I know the carbs!)...those were always...if he won't eat that then we are in a bad spot.

I also asked DS to try putting food in front of him to see what he will eat today - just offer and put away if he doesn't want it. Can always try the KD too....he always wants his civvies dinner.

We just need to guts moving again!

I like hearing he's being a cuddle monster
Yep, if he was hiding under the coffee table again...I would know things are not good.
