I don't know what happened. He seemed to be doing really well. Tested him and went to bed last night. He came to cuddle like normal. Woke up this morning and he was not there. He didn't come to my room either. Found him and he didn't eat his food last night. He was breathing really hard and fast. Tested and he was higher than expected. He didn't want to eat or even take a whiskas treat.

Dealt with the other fur kids and put him in the car and ran to the ER.

He has a fever and heavy lung sounds. Vet as confused as heck on what dose I am giving...and why. First suggested I stop the insulin then said he thought he might be DKA:confused:.

Doing full bloodwork and xray.

I actually had him booked for blood work and health check Saturday.

He was doing so well considering all his issues. :arghh::arghh::arghh::arghh:

Second cat in 2 weeks...asthma! He is really struggling. They don't want to bump his prednisolone without talking with his IM. Which leaves us with the inhalers.

I hope we can get this attack under control! They are going to hold him until feeling better.

Going to go get him some of his food to see if he will eat. His BG are sticking in the mid teens. Bloodwork was normal except PH. It is acidic....consistent with not being able to exhale properly.

They are going to keep him longer. They thought I could bring him home but as soon as he got stressed coming to the room he really had a hard time breathing. Going to give him some more salbutamol and put him back into isolation/dark. They will call me later to see if he can come home tonight or if they will hold him longer.
They may just end up giving him a prednisolone dose (which he missed his normal dose this morning)...anything at this point. ER vet didn't want to upset the FD but I was like...if he can't breathe therefore can't eat this all maybe a little mute. We can adjust insulin dose...
 
Oh boy, that sounds really frightening. Girlie has asthma, and we starting using the Aerokat inhaler years ago once the Prednisolone got things under control. Getting her accustomed to it was a little bit of a challenge initially, and it's still not her favourite medical intervention, but I always try to get her when she's half asleep, which works well. He is getting worse. So they are going to give him some prednisolone and some sedation to help calm him and put him in the oxygen cage. Still don't know if he has eaten but I am assuming not. I hope they are watching his BG's and keytones.

Freaked out right now.
 
Poor Jonesy and you :bighug::bighug::bighug: Since asthma is treated with pred and he's already on it one would think the dose needs increased:confused: Hope he feels much better by the morning. Extra loads of vines and prayers your way.

They said I could come tomorrow morning. He was going to be sedated and in the oxygen cage...so I can't cuddle with him any way.:( His care is going to be transferred to his regular IM vet in the morning as well. I hope he will be a little less timid with prednisolone if it is needed.

I kept saying...he didn't get his dose this morning...just give some to him. We will deal with the FD later. He was worried...I was like - he isn't breathing > not eating > so the FD is the last problem really. He has already missed two shots if not at least 1 more...so we are starting over any way. And it isn't like we haven't worked through dose changes before! And is usually just scheduled doses for a week until we can get the inhalers up and running. Uggg...sometimes they just don't listen!

My Fritz has asthma we manage with oral predisiolone.
Did they do xrays? He could have pneumonia and need antibiotics.
Fritz had pneumonia and was given oral Orbax saved his life. Hugs to you and kitty:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
 
Update at 830PM:

  • Still in oxygen cage. Will try to wean him off of that over night.
  • Breathing better as of now.
  • IV fluids.
  • Still not eating.
  • Getting his usual meds except insulin.
  • Spot checking BG's will give fast acting insulin by IV if needed.
  • Pred was given at 4 PM.
  • I'M Vet will be looking at him around 8 tomorrow.
  • They will call if something drastic changes overnight.

asthma can be triggered by an allergic reaction too....
wondering if the sudden worsening means he was exposed ( by eating, hiding, insect sting, etc something that inflamed his body's response)

ask the vet....
maybe if they give him something comparable to benadryl, it would decrease the systemic reaction......
that's what they do with us with an anaphylactic response.
just a thought.....
 
Oh Tracey, you must be so scared! Please let us know how you go in the morning. I know how terrifying normal asthma attacks can be, and it sounds like this is something else entirely. I am assuming they did a chest xray I would hope that was first. Do you have any triggery things in house like mold or live in a area with lots of allergens? 2 asthma kitties how hard. Astma sucks and stress makes it harder. i am praying he isoff sedation soon so he can take nice deep breaths and get better. Sedation is important sometimes though when you are too freaked out frm difficulty breathing and stress to breath effectively. prayers that oxygen calm and rest gets him back on track.
