I'm thinking it's 1am for you. You could probably sleep for 2 hrs if you want. It looks like he's clearing the bounce quickly. I'm in Oregon and can be here in 1 or 2 hrs for you. Tell me what you want. I promise it won't be like this every night.

I'll check him in another 15 mins. That should be one hour apart I believe. Thanks for sticking around!

well, that's both good news and bad news.

on the one hand, clearing the bounce this fast means that his body hasn't gotten too unaccustomed to normal numbers. that's a good thing.

the bad news, though, is that he's dropped 273 points in 3.5 hrs. that's pretty fast. cats don't drop at a constant per hour rate, but that was 90 points in a half hour.

i don't think you can just go to bed and leave him at this point. I'd like to slow him down. Can you give him another bite of food and add a drop of karo syrup or honey on it to slow him down?

If he were mine, I would give him another bite of food with the extra honey/karo on it - just a drop or two - and then i'd retest him in 30-60 minutes. He's not in danger until he's much lower (under 50) it's just that he's dropping quickly as he clears this bounce and I don't know when he'll stop.

Can you nap and wake up again? Is that going to work for you?

If you can't stay awake or nap and wake back up, we need a plan B.

Let me know what you want to do.

He just ate a bit of food. I would probably have better luck feeding him tempation treats. I'm sure he will eat these. Your thought?

He wasn't too thrilled about the Karo coated treats but I did manage to get him to eat one with Karo on it. I then gave him 6 treats with no Karo which he gladly accepted.

hahaha that's awesome.

so your choice - can you retest in 30 minutes or an hour? I just want to see him slowed down significantly. I think an hour is ok as long as you'll wake up. :-D when i had to do this, i napped on the sofa with the light still on and had my cell phone alarm set on loud.

what do you want to do?

you're doing great, by the way. you've had a heckuva first day! most people don't start out quite this dramatically.

4,000 calories per kilogram.

no worries, the karo should provide most of the carbs. i've heard other people give those same tempations as high carb treats, too.

It will be 30 mins since his last test in a couple minutes. I can wait another 30 which will put us at 1 hr since the last test and 30 mins since receiving the treats

it takes 15-30 minutes for the carbs to get into the bloodstream, depending on the cat.

let's meet up in another 30 minutes from now. i think that's plenty soon enough.

:-D

Sounds good. Thank you.

Perfect! I didn't want to increase him, just slow him. If you leave out food will he be able to get it? I think if I were you I would leave out plenty of low carb food and go to bed. Carbs can wear off but I think he's still ok.

How does that sound to you?

By the way Mike if you need help during the night, open a new topic here in the Lantus Tight Rev forum and say help in the subject line. If he's headed for under 50 and you need instant help, hit 911. There are often people online during the night. You can also post in main health.

Great job tonight. Tomorrow we can talk more.

Yes, I have some wet food (watered down) left within reach. I'm not sure if it's low carb - the vet gave it to me. Its called Purina AD. I also have some dry "Special kitty" which is likely high carb but is what he is accustom to eating. I still have a bit of research to do on nutrition and still have to buy him his "new" good-for-him food. For tonight, this is all that I have to offer.

I feel good now that I see his numbers are not crashing down fast. He is resting comfortably and smiling at me right now wondering why we are not in the bed together.

I think I'm going to call it a night.

It was so nice of you to stick around and help me through this rough first day. I owe you one my friend!

Sounds great. I will be back on tomorrow. Thanks once again.

I was able to catch a few hours of sleep. Just woke up and checked Webster's BG @+11 and he is at 425. I suppose being close to the high side just before his insulin shot is better than being lower?

We were actually out of town, 8 hours away in PA when all of this happened. We are leaving to drive back home to NC with Webster (I know, the stress is not going to be good for him) shortly after his Lantis shot. Driving back home today is unfortunately mandatory. He travels this same trip many, many times per year so he is sorta accustom to the ride.

I plan to keep my emergency kit close by in the car as well as his temptation treats.

I'm going to check his BG again at AMPS. Will keep you posted.

Hang in there, Mike! These ups and downs are hard on us newbies. Not all cats are stressed by car rides. If Webster is used to this ride, it might not be that stressful for him. Give him a big hug for Mikey and me. As everyone as said, he's gorgeous!

Honestly, it's not such a bad thing if his numbers are a bit higher on a road trip. You won't have to pull over every half hour to test!

Safe travels back to NC.

i'd still probably check him somewhere along the way. He was clearing that bounce really fast and had a lot of momentum as his blood sugar dropped. Probably the return to high numbers was from the karo and temptations. Maybe. In any case, I don't think you can assume anything will stay the same for him at this point.

Hope the trip home goes well! You did a great job hanging in there last night!
