Hey, We have started with insulin last week and I started measuring his glucose with a meter that works similarly to Alphatrek. I just got the measure of 5.1mmol/l, that´s 91.8 in the US. We have a check up in the vet on two hours and it´s a long card ride. Should we skip insulin now?
Hi , I was looking at your spreadsheet, please test Serverino before you give any insulin AMPS to see what his BG is to see if it's a safe number to shot and the same with his PMPS.
Looks like you are in Europe somewhere, by your meter choice? That low of 92 is a bit too low to give Severino any insulin. I'm saying that, because you have not been testing long, and there are no mid-cycle tests to see how low the insulin takes Severino at nadir. How did he do at the vet today? Not familiar with the Mjau food you are feeding him. Do you have any nutritional info on that, so we could check the carb levels?
Hey @Deb & Wink Mjau is a very low carb canned food reccomended by the vets for diabetics or other cats here in Sweden. We´ve going to do a blood curve this weekend. We were at the vet yesterday. He was going to take fructosamine and urinproof but the home results and the energetic level of the cat (plus weight gain and other factors) made the vet decide it wasn´t necessary. He took a blood test for EPI because he has a loose stool. But overall, he said his response to the retreatment is really surprising and much better than expected. The veterinary said it´s safe for us to shoot unless he is less than 81, as long as he eats as he does (he is a hungry kitty - he has been a stray not that long ago and has some weight to put on).
I'm tagging @Ann & Scatcats who is also from Sweden. At least she is in the same time zone as you are! With EPI (Exocrine Pancreatic Insufficiency), the stool color is often gray. Not just a loose stool. That 81 is really, really low to be giving your cat insulin. Especially since you have so little home testing data. Would you please try to get some mid-cycle BG readings? Perhaps a +5 and/or a +7 would be good. You need to find out how low the insulin drops Severino's BG levels, not just how high his BG levels are at the pre-shot test time. Without those mid-cycle tests, Severino could be dropping dangerously low, and sliding towards hypoglycemia. Have you looked at the "Sticky" or pinned posts on this forum for Prozinc?
The Confusion @Deb & Wink ! I didn't know you tagged me in the Prozinc Forum. WOW! Det visste jag inte!!! Därfor kunde jag inte hitta Bozita någonstand Så glad att det finns Mjau!
That is one reason I tagged @Ann & Scatcats , thinking that she would know more about he Mjau cat food. I have heard about Bozita cat food from the UK Cat Food List. So thank you very much to Ann for giving both of us more information on the food you are feeding Severino.
Yep, Amanda, Scatcats have had many Cat Friends in the house during their 32 years. I'm 53. Neighbour Tiggy unfortunately moved out him too from the house ca 2 weeks ago. Rang the door to say Farvel. However didn't move so far away though.
@Deb & Wink @Ann & Scatcats @Diane Tyler's Mom So I am quite confused around here! I went to the vet this Thursday and the nurse+vet said me that I should give the full 1.0 unit insulin even if his test was 92. They said me that he should not be lower than 72 (US numbers), than I should proceed with the hypoglicemic measures. They justified saying that the insulin dose was very low so there was no danger. They said me it would be bad to skip the insulin because it could give a too high blood result later on. I am taking his first glucosecurve right now and I am worried. The first glucose test was alright, so I gave the insulin shot. I am taking measures for the glucose curve every two hours according to the veterinarian scheme. It´s been 4 hours and he´s got hyploglicemic numbers, so he has gotten more food now - he is eating. I will test again soon. Last evening I took his glucose number and it was 146, so I followed the veterinarian advice and shot the insulin. But it didn´t feel alright, so I stayed awake longer (I normally sleep by that time) and just watched the cat, even if he had eaten a lot. 4 hours after the shot I tested again, finding it was even lower. I served him more low carb wet food, he refused to eat but meowed at me! So I served him a bit of dry food he had before, mixed with the low carb food, and than he ate everything. This took all of the night.... --> According to the veterinary I should never skip the insulin if it´s higher than 92; to not cause a higher blood result later on. But I´ve got two hypoglicermic numbers already? Do you think it´s safe to not give the insulin if it´s lower than 180, as you reccomend in here?
I see many anonymous animals in my google docs spreedsheet today, but no answer so far! I am curious! (And a bit worried!)
Hello Amanda. I cannot give you dosing advice (too new, little experience), but I notice that you've not had a response in 2 hours. If you need a quicker response you should post this in the "Feline Health" forum. (There are more sets of eyes there than on the Prozinc forum.) I see that there is at least one experienced person @JanetNJ responding to posts. Hopefully my tag will work and she'll see this... (Also, if you do post there, use the "?" option in the title header to let people know you're looking for an answer to a question.) Enid
On the beginning, withought much testing, it is unsafe to shoot under 180. If you get a lower number than that at shot time, wait another 30-60 min without feeding to see if the number goes up. If not, skip.
I really think you need to lower your dose to 0.5. I think that 311 you got was a bounce from going too low.
Agree with what Janet said. Animals in your SS? There was a thread in the Tech Support forum here about that issue. Sounds like you may have been hacked. https://felinediabetes.com/FDMB/thr...l-editing-your-ss-while-you-are-in-it.234406/
