GA ?! 9/9 Felix - is this DKA? Should I be going to ER?

Do I need to take my kitty to them ER or can I wait for regular vet tomorrow? Any advice is helpful!

Took him to vet yesterday (bs 400AM). Crying all night then didn’t want to eat in AM - 1st time that’s been an issue but he did puke a couple time this week, struggled to keep blood sugars low 200-300’s, 400 once or twice - he was last in green on 8/31(I’ve had a lot going on as husband is very sick & I’ve failed on chart).

Per vet- he was dehydrated kidney disease based on BUN levels (72). IV fluids all day- 7-8 hours refused to eat at vet. Refused to eat when he got home, so force fed. Today didn’t want to eat, picked up Elura around noon & he ate about a tablespoon of hill a/d. I have force fed test of the day, if food in tongue will eat & keep it down. Is drinking water.

Checked ketones just now, mild-moderate based on Walmart relion meter.
bs- 300’s today, I gave him 1/2 dose at noon Lantus 1U, went up prob due to food, just gave him 1U & force fed food.

Call the ER and see if they will see him. Mild to moderate is serous. Have you not been testing or just not keeping your ss up to date?

Do you have any recent spreadsheet data? Even the last week or two will help.

What +time after the 0.5 unit is "now", how far apart were the doses? Did you dose this AM?

Thank you for Quick response & confirming that I should go - I’m here now. Hoping for the best!

I always test just haven’t been good about the spreadsheet.

I bet I could recreate some just from the meter. I know the last green was 88 on 8/31. I’ll work on this...

Unfortunately, my kitty passed away late last night. Had I not taken him to the ER, he wouldn’t have made it through the night - and suffered. I never wanted him to suffer. I went back & looked through his bs, it wasn’t that high until the morning I took him to the vet - Wednesday (400 - day before 300’s, day before that 200’s). He was better when I took him to the vet than when I got home, the hope was kidney disease & dehydrated but he had something else going on. They did an ultrasound & it wasn’t normal. They said likely dka but also possibly cancer - definitely more to it. It happened so fast. I’m devastated but I know that he had an amazing life.

I am truly thankful for this group and each of you! While I didn’t post a lot, I found this site in 2017 a couple months after he was diagnosed. I’ve probably read & re-read a lot of the info postings especially about Lantus, testing, etc.. I wouldn’t have always home tested but for this group, he never went hypoglycemic or had DKA prior to the end & I truly believe it’s because this group made me knowledgeable. I had the vet issues everyone talks about early on & then have moved several times and had to switch vets, if it wasn’t for this group I’m positive he wouldn’t have lived to be 15.

If there’s anything I can do to help out this group, please let me know!! I’m happy to watch the boards & try to help others, just don’t want to overstep. Like I said, anything I can do to help, please let me know! Take care!

I so sorry. It’s so hard to lose a fur baby but even harder with the even stronger bond you develop while caring for a cat with diabetes or an illness. Felix was well cared for and I can tell deeply loved. I’m so sorry for your loss.

I came back to pay it back after Max passed as have many others including all the moderators. We would love the help watching the boards and helping when you have time as well as tagging others when you don’t. Take care.:bighug:

I am so sorry you lost your sweet Felix. :bighug::bighug: Sometimes body stressors will make their numbers shoot up, so it's possible that's what you were seeing. I am glad you could be there and keep him from pain. Four years caring for a diabetic kitty is a lot. Take care of yourself this next while too. It is hard on us to lose the ones we've become so close to.

Thank you for your generous offer of help. We can always use help in the Feline Health forum, directing new people to resources and answering their questions about diabetes. We all remember how scary it was to be new and how it felt when someone stepped in and held our hand through it in the beginning.

We are very sorry to hear that your kitty Felix has traveled to the Bridge. He will be "in good paws" with all of our GAs until that wonderful day when you are reunited.
Fly free, dear Felix, on your beautiful golden wings. You are much loved. cat_wings>o

I am so sorry for your loss. We become so attached to our kitties and the ones with FD are even more special.

Like Wendy said, when you feel ready, we can always use help. This is a unique place with a true sense of community. There are many of us who remain to pay it forward for years after our kitties have travelled to the Rainbow Bridge.

I do agree, you do have even more of a bond when they’re diabetic!

Thank you for all the thoughts & kind words! 4 years of having a diabetic cat is a long time, the crazy thing is I got so used to the testing & shots that I now feel like I’m forgetting to do something.

I definitely plan on coming back & helping. It may not be right away but I will...
