Yesterday lots of PM greens

Bounce to low red from a long run of 40s last night, for Papaya not too bad of a bounce. She's propped up in bed cleaning her tummy to keep it white, fluffly and snugglable.

When I get up at 4:30 to test & shoot, she is sitting up waiting for me on her side of the bed when I return with the little hot water bottle for her ear. I need her closer to the light, so I pat the bed on my side and she comes over and flops down to be tested, purring all the while. I was recently remembering how I usually had to test her when she was first diagnosed . . . she wanted to hide under the bed until I took it off the frame and put it on the floor. Then she took to hiding in a small closet, so I was often lying headfirst in the closet trying to get my arm at the right angle to do the testing. I like the routine now much better!

Have a nice, relaxing day!

The things we do for love! Thank you for admitting to that, Amy. Now I don't feel quite as odd.

Papaya sounds like she's in her happy place today. Do you get to snuggle the tummy, or is it just for show?

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

Morning Lara! The tummy used to be like a baited trap . . . "see this tummy? wanna rub it? go ahead, so I can sink my teeth into your arm" but slooooowly we have gotten to the point where she USUALLY lets me rub it without incident. I don't think anyone but me could get away with it, though!

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

Good morning Amy,
Sweet on how she gets ready for you  Hoot has taken over my craft table. It has now become his and he runs to it when it's time  I swaddle him in a big towel and he loves it. He wouldn't sit still for it otherwise.
Don't ya wish they would just settle somewhere instead of Hi..Lo..Hi..Lo Come on back down to a nice surf Papaya.
Have a great day Amy and I am so impressed on how much you have canned :o Very nice!

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

Hi Pam! Craft table, cat table, nearly the same thing  It's hilarious Hoot comes for the test but still won't sit still without the towel.

Hey, for Papaya this IS settled . . . anything other than a black start is good news

The canning . . . Mom says I should have been a farmer. Oh well. I'll be an "Urban Homesteader" instead, and I guess Papaya is my livestock! I hope your veggie-fermenting project works out well too, isn't it fun to learn new skills?

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

I hope Papaya clears the bounce soon. Isn't it great how our kitties learn the testing routine and usually cooperate. I bought a headlamp to help me see Furball's dark ear. It also comes in handy if the power goes out.

This is a funny image! Kitty thinks she is safe, and then all of a sudden the top comes off the bed! It's nice when they finally decide to cooperate. I remember trying to give Ebby her first shot...it was a nightmare!

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

Yay for Papaya purring and relaxing during her tests and shots! You've come a long way, baby!
I hope she comes down some for you today.

PS: I love your food pics! Inspiring!!

Re: 9/8 Papaya AMPS=420 +4=399

Thanks Carla, Melissa and Josie for visiting! It's so true, when you first try testing and shooting and everyone else says it's so easy you think "yeah, right, not with my cat!" but here we all are!

Carla - dark ears would be hard! Happily Papaya only has half of one ear in black and the rest is pale orange.

Melissa - when I first put the bed on the floor, she took a while to figure out that there was no under-the-bed anymore, and would go rooting around where the quilt hung over to try to find a way in! I was fine with the hiding in the closet because at least I could get her out of there if I needed to . . . or test her there.

Josie - we have come a long ways! Not to OTJ or really even regulated, but . . . a long ways nevertheless! (glad you enjoyed the food pics! Home preserving is a good way to save money, which helps with all the cat expenses, too - but mostly it's just satisfying to see the shelves full of colourful goodies!)

PMPS is down to yellow again, and considering recent trends I'm going to test a bit earlier in the cycle so no surprise 40s!!

Hi Amy,
I'm glad Papaya's feeling good. :-D
OOhhhh snugglable tummy bait..... I know that too well.
I love how Papaya's testing routine evolved.
Ours too!
I pat one side of the sofa where we normally do the PS tests, and she comes and sits there.
Your condo today made remember how it used to be and appreciate how it is now!

I guess I've been thinking back on how far we've come a lot, because every summer I spend part of August at my parents'. Last year I didn't know what was wrong with Papaya, and she seemed so sick . . . peed herself in the carrier in the car, and when I took her out I could really see how skinny her legs were since the fur was all wet down. Then she just lay on the bed hardly doing anything for the first couple days and would just eat little bits of wet food I took her. I was afraid it was kidney failure and thought if I took her to the vet I'd have to immediately make the decision to let her go, and I wasn't ready to do that, so it took a couple more weeks until I took her in for blood tests. Knowing now that her blood sugar must have been so high just makes me sick to think about it . . . thank goodness she survived my ignorance.

I didn't have a car at that point, so when I got back from my parents' I took her in her big carrier an hour on two city buses to the vet, got a bunch of blood tests done, took the buses an hour back home, and twenty minutes later the vet called to say "your cat is diabetic, you have to bring her back right now for a different test" (fructosamine). Another hour each way on the bus. And more than a month's rent on diagnoses costs alone. It seemed so overwheming I didn't know how I could possibly look after her, so I really did consider PTS as I knew it was the reasonable thing do do financially, but just thinking about it made me so miserable that I dried my tears and went and bought a glucometer and decided that even if it was totally irrational I was just going to try treating her. Then I had to change vets, too, since the first one wanted to use Caninsulin and keep her in a day for a curve and REFUSED to even estimate how much that was going to cost me. That was last September.

Now, nearly a year later, with a sleek, shiny, purring, happy cat sitting next to me, totally patient with the testing routine and slowing coming down the dosing ladder, it is a real relief to look back and be glad that I am not starting out with this. Now while it requires some attention to scheduling and some cost cutting in other areas, it's really pretty manageable, and Papaya is her old self again. I'm so glad I didn't lose her a year ago.

Nice story Amy ♥ I feel the same way. Most people look at me like I'm crazy doing what I do, but I had no choice. It's my baby and I would do anything I could to help him. I remember how bad my hands used to shake when I would test him, and crying because I couldn't get any blood out of his ear and when I did I couldn't see it on his black ear  And everyone saying it would get easier...sure I thought  But like you said...here we all are, and what a wonderful bunch of kitties and beans we have met all over the world. It really is a special thing.

Thanks, Pam! I just wish sometimes I could explain to Papaya why I'm poking her ear. But there was one point where she stopped leaving the kitchen after being fed as per her usual routine, and instead turned around and flopped down in the middle of the floor to wait for her insulin. So while she probably doesn't understand the details, I think she senses that all this weirdness is part of her feeling better . . . in any case she's cooperative, and now I know what I'm doing, so it's all good!

+ 3 didn't look like this cycle was going to be very active but at +5 here we are at  again! Hoooooopefully this was a little slower drop and maaaaaaybe won't go the other way too quickly :? I couldn't decide between the usual 8% and her MC of 14%, but I went for the 14% in hopes that if she surfs a little higher she won't bounce so high. We will see!!
