It's been a while since we've had a thread like this. We've got lots of new folks in LantusLand, and I personally have just been so busy that I haven't been able to catch up with everyone and learn about their kitty. I thought this thread would be a fun way for everyone to get to know eachother a bit...a little light-hearted break from the hard work of dealing with FD!

I've heard a few great stories behind the names of LL kitties, and I know there are lots more out there! How did your kitty's name come about?

All of my kitties have stories behind their names, but I'll just go with Trix, since she's the sugarcat in the crowd. Years ago, I was heavily involved in a pet rescue discussion board. One of my dearest friends there was planning on rescuing a special needs kitten; this sweet little girl kitty had deformed front legs that she couldn't use, so she hopped around on her back legs. My friend was packed and ready to drive several hunderd miles to pick up this kitten, when the kitten unexpectedly passed away. She was going to name the kitten "Trixie".

A month or two later, my own Trixie showed up as a stray on my back porch. She had been abandoned by my next door neighbors, was terrified, and was nearly starved to death...and it was late fall, starting to get very cold. My friend who lost her kitten was very instrumental in helping me trap and rescue this kitty that was on my back porch. Because of her help, we were able to bring the kitty to safety. I named this kitty "Trixie", in loving memory of the TrixieKitten she lost.

I'm looking forward to hearing about all the LL kitties this weekend!!!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

I was living in California, and was taking my daily walk in the hills behind my house, and had just reached the top of the hill, when I heard a cat crying, but did not see one. I decided to continue on my walk and when I came back that way, if I still heard the cat, I would look for it. It was just around sunset on a December afternoon, at this point.

By the time I came back that way, the sun had set, and it was a lotter darker outside, but I still heard the cat.
I started off the little trail I was following, and looked through the dry grasses, to where I thought the cat was.
And there was this little feral kitten, running from me. I caught him, and brought him with me to the McDonald's at the bottom of the hill where I was going to get dinner, and asked a bunch of people if they wanted the kitten. There were a couple young girls that pleaded with their fathers, but their fathers all said "No.", so I brought the kitten home, and gave him to my 10 year old cat Buddy as a friend for him (by the way, it was a No Pets Allowed apartment, I lived in, but lots of people had pets :) ).

Buddy, who was a boy, loved the kitten, and was just like a mother to him. He slept with him, and washed him, and protected him. I decided to call the new kitten J.D. (J for my DBF Jamie, and D for Dyana).

J.D. eventually got used to us, but did not get much socialization at my house, and was afraid of hoomans for many years. After Buddy passed at about 20, I waited another year or so, and then I got Ginger, for J.D.
He loves her, and sleeps with her, and washes her, and protects her. Just like he was the mommy.

I did notice that once I got J.D. that Buddy stopped playing, and once I got Ginger that J.D. stopped playing. That was a down fall, and I don't know why they stopped playing just because there was a more energenic being in the house.

I have been wondering lately, what J.D. would do with a new kitten... I would like to try one, and if it works, keep it, but I don't know how you can just try one. Ginger would probably hiss at it, but I bet J.D. would tolerate it well, and maybe love it and wash it and sleep with it and protect it. Who knows..

That's our story.

These are great stories! So sweet .. None of our kitties have stories like these behind their names, but all our kitties have had three names ..

Mocha Jo Latte, because when we got her she was such a light creamy color .. who knew she would eventually turn so dark we now call her bear ..

Twix Pixie Stix .. because she has a caramel stripe running down her forehead and pixie stix because she was the sweetest kitten, just like a bunch of sugar! aka, beans!

Cheddar Colby Jack (GA) because you guessed it, he was a large orange ball of fuzz .. aka, cheesemoose ...

Can't wait to read the rest of the stories!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Ah, the story of Poopy's name....

Early in September of 2000, my (at the time) fiance went to visit a friend and was astonished to see a teeny, tiny black kitten cross a busy street, dodging traffic as he went, to get to him. Upon arrival, the kitten rubbed against SOs leg, meowing he'd found Dad! SO had to bring him home. SO called the little kitten "Little ****" as he terrorized his two adult cats and older dog, got into anything and everything he wished, shredded papers, climbed anything he could get his claws into, and was just a nuisance...but also very loving. SO was a big biker dude, covered in tattoos and everyone thought he was not one to be messed with, other than the kitten. While SO would bellow and yell at the kitten's troublesome antics and shake his finger at him, the kitten would not cower like the other animals or hoomans when SO would bellow, he'd saunter over, sniff the extended finger, mark it, and saunter off as if to say, "Yeah, yeah, yeah. What-ev-er!" (The kitten knew, as I did, SO had a huge, loving heart!)

The litter box leavings also left a lot to be desired. The kitten would do dump and runs, with no attempt at covering them, they smelled so bad. Often we'd have to leave the house to let it air after disposing of the aromatic "gifts".

My weekend visits brought the "Dad" factor to a sudden halt. One look at me and "Little ****" decided Mom was the coolest! I couldn't call the adorable, loving kitten "Little ****" so we compromised with "Poopy". My then teenaged son added "Poopmeister", "The Poop", "Poopster", and "Poop". Poopy answers to anything with "Poop" in it. While his litter box leavings will still clear a house, he does attempt to cover them from time to time. He's a momma's boy and tolerates other hoomans as long as they adore him and don't poke or prod him. He keeps my two dogs in line and rules this roost. He's my baby and I love him dearly.

When Poopy was about 2-3 years old, I was living alone and Poopy was lonely while I was off at work. I sought out to get him a playmate. This brings us to Mia joining the family...and how she got her name.

Mia was also a kitten when she joined us, saved from a family of children who had decided to take shears to her to remove her black fur. She was, and still is, terrified of hoomans. Mia=Missing In Action. She can bolt out of a room faster than lightening! She's learned there are "safe" times to approach a hooman for her much wanted lovings: occupied on the toilet, leaning back into the coach, laying down on any surface and covered with a blanket are all "safe" approach times and she doesn't hesitate to take advantage of them. Approach her on your feet and all you get is a blur.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

GA Merlin was named after King Arthur's personal wizard, Merlin. My Merlin really did have magical abilities - he would make himself mysteriously disappear, especially if it was vet time  , he lost his collar somewhere in the house and I could not find it but a week later he came back from exploring the basement and he was holding his collar in his mouth. His nickname, given to him by a LL member years ago, is Squishy

Civie Leroy got his name because he's crazy like the red Experiment 627 (bigger and badder that Stich himself) in Disney's Lilo and Stich movie  Leroy even kind of looks like the cartoon alien - red Aby with giant ears and big eyes

Experiment_627_by_IndriLemur.png

Civie Emma's original name was Toaster Strudel. I guess her original family had young children who gave her that name. I renamed her Emma just because I like that name.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

We had just moved to a new rental out in the sticks in WA. It was a small home and it had about an acre of land including a yard, some woods and a little creek at the back. Our neighbors often had their grand daughter over to visit and she could be seen carrying around this big ol' cat that lived in the woods. They also usually had another neighbors dog on their front porch, as her owner was away from home a lot and she enjoyed the company. Evidently, the cat and the dog would snuggle up together for warmth and companionship.

As it got colder in the fall, the kitty wanted to come into their house, as they had been feeding him and giving him skritches. He was getting pretty adamant about it, in fact - wouldn't you? It's cold & rainy in the woods! After a few conversations over the fence, I told them I would take the cat in, get him neutered and cleaned up and see if I could find a forever home for him (we already had 2 cats and 2 dogs, so I wasn't thinking our home was going to be his final destination - sound familiar?) So, we got him all fixed up and he was staying with us to recover. I figured he would want to go back outside to his happy hunting grounds and high adventure, but he never meowed at the door or gave any impression he wanted to go back out. He was home.

As for the name, the neighbors grand daughter was calling him Buster, so we promised her we'd keep it that way.

OOOOH!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'm utterly thrilled to see this condo, as it gives me the opportunity to clear up a common misconception!!
I am named for the inimitable Zachariah Binks from the movie Hocus Pocus (you might recall he defeated not one, but THREE witches-
including the formidable Bette Midler!)....
and NOT that irritating creature from Star Wars- Jar Jar Binks, whose use of language was more irritating than endearing!

For those of you who did not see Hocus Pocus-
Zachariah Binks was a human spirit who was brilliant enough to choose the incarnation of the best creature on earth for his second life-
a cat!! :-D :-D

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Fun topic; enjoying reading how the kitties got their names.

We've had 3 kitties.

(GA) Smokey was named for his coloring. We had been calling him different names, waiting for him to look at us when we said one he liked. He looked when we said Smokey.

Oreo is black and white (neck, lower belly and whiskers on the left side of his face), so we were looking for black and white kitty names. Suggestions for the kids had been narrowed down to: Maestro (from Pinocchio), Berlioz (from Aristocats) and Oreo. From those, we did a blind draw and got Oreo.

We did the same thing with Hershey that we had done with Smokey. Kept saying names, waiting for him to look at us when he liked one. D-a-y-s went by with us throwing out names, only to be ignored. :YMSIGH: The kids and I came home from church one Wednesday evening. Doug had come home from work while we were gone and was asleep in the recliner, with the kitten in his lap, surrounded by balled up candy wrappers. I said - Hershey! and he looked. Guess that was a winner :-D

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

KT's full name is "Mr. KT". As a tiny kitten he rode 120 miles trapped in the brake control box of a MKT ("Missouri/Kansas/Texas Railroad), also called the "Katy" line - rail car...he had to catch SOME ride, his home was here! The people that got him out didn't know ANYTHING about cat 'plumbing' - they named him 'Katy'. When we came and got him, I quickly figured out that 'Katy' wasn't quite the correct moniker so he became "Mr. KT". He was already answering to 'Katy'....smart little booger even when he was a bitty bitty baby with a TAIL that waved like a huge fuzzy flag.

Snowshoe - When he arrived here, his name was "CIC-1813" altho', unbeknownst to the Animal Shelter, shared the same ID number with a female with the same markings. He 'mistaked' his way thru their whole system including the vet who 'fixed' one male 1813 and one female 1813. His adoption paperwork says he's a female....the plumbing says different. I actually didn't discover this until we'd had him a couple of days. I knew I needed to check the incision and had gained his trust so flipped him on his side...WHAT? No stitches? ....wait...dose iz dingleberries down der! and there IS stitches. I'd truly wanted a male but this one, a female, had already told me 'I'm waiting...get here fast' from the pic on the Animal Control website. I tried to name him 'Snowball' in memory of my childhood cat but it changed to 'Snowshoe' when we discovered he just loved to chase shoestrings...we'd suddenly find a cat attached to our foot....

Nuisance - iz what he IZ! He was a 6 week old TINY kitten when we rescued him - first thing he did was run under the daybed and refuse to be 'caught' again. DH said "Oh you're going to be a Nuisance"....BINGO! He and Leroy above are kin - they both are ADHD with terrible memories....

That's enough right now isn't it?

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Bob was supposed to be named Phillip. We had 3 kittens brought to us as orphans maybe 3 or 4 weeks old, found and when Momma never returned, they were rescued (total litter of 5 but the other rehabber kept two until they were weaned) from fire ants who had discovered their hidey hole. (Bob still has ant bite scars on his nose where the fur never appeared). We were doing lots of wildlife rehab at that point, and what was 3 more mouths to feed? We were only going to keep one, and find homes for the other two. Yeah, that happened. Of the 5 in the litter, two had tails, three had no tails. I wanted a female, of which we had two, and Bob was the lone male and the runt of the litter. After about a week or two without names, it became quite evident that there was no way my wife was going to give up the runt of the litter. He was just too damn cute.

At that time, Nickalodeon's top cartoon was The Rugrats, and "our two" became Phillip and Lillian after the twins on that cartoon. If you're familiar with the cartoon series, one of the endearing characteristics was how the kids butchered the English language, and one of them, Chuckie would substitute words, in this case, by saying "So help me Bob". Given that "Phillip" had no tail, his name got changed to "Bob". Made sense. But that was too simple, so his actual given name is "Roberto", He will respond to "Robert" (pronounced in French), or 'Berto, or Bob. He doesn't seem to mind the informality.

Amusingly, when we decided that Bob was a "keeper", my wife called her friend,Dixie, who had originally brought the kittens over to find out how many of these kittens had been found homes. Dixie said "two of yours are spoken for, and I found a home for one of my other two". Well, I wasn't giving up Lillian, period. I had determined that Lillian was the reincarnation of another kitty (Boots) who we had lived with until she passed away at 19. Boots was actually the reason that I had met my wife years earlier and Boots was my soulmate. (long story for another day). Lillian looked exactly like Boots, down to the little bow tie moustache and the same number of little white toes (14). To this day, there's no doubt in my mind that Boots sent Lillian to me, because she was Boots in another body, just a young one.

So my wife says "OK, we're keeping Bob, the no-tail boy." Dixie says "oh, but he already has a home because someone wanted him just because he's got no tail". And my wife says "Um, can you tell them that Bob 'didn't make it' and give them another of the ones you have?" So yeah, that's what Dixie did. Just a little white lie! and Bob became a keeper too. The little white lie resulted in my ending up here, so I guess it worked out in the end for everybody, especially for Bob.

Mullet? No idea really. He was another orphan brought to us, found in a peach basket on the front steps of a church. "Can you keep him just until he's weaned?" Yeah, sure, no problem! It's been 14 years so I guess he never was weaned? I wanted to call him Moses, the whole basket in the river story. "Mullet" was the nickname of a kid my wife used to baby sit before I met her, and the name just made her laugh. She started calling him that, and the name just stuck. It is sort of fun to say, but there's no real logical reason for the name. He doesn't resemble the haircut or the fish by the same name. He's just "Mullet". A big grumpy orinch boy.

I guess there really is a good story to every one of our kitties' names, and I love reading every one of them! Thanks for posting this, Amy!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

What a great idea, Amy!!! And I love all these stories behind the names. How touching for Trixie's name!

Unfortunately, Gracie does not have an amazing story behind her name. When we knew from the breeder that she would be our baby, we started trying to think of a good Scottish name for her. I thought about MacKenzie or Kenzie and other names but the breeder said none really fit her personality. When the three kittens in the litter got really sick with some unknown virus (they weren't sure they would make it) and then pulled through, I thought it was but for the grace of God that she did. And I've always loved the name "Grace". And so she is. Her registered name is Kinross AJ's Amazing Grace. The "A" is for her mama Annie and "J" is for her daddy "Jimmy". But we call her Gracie as well as her other nicknames of Baby Gracie, baby girl, Lil Stinka, crazy baby, and sometimes GiGi.

With Tobey, we went through tons of books looking for good male Scottish names. We could not agree on any    So then I started looking at Scottish town names, etc. and found the town "Tobermory" ....the old Gaelic name of the town being "Tobar Mhoire". And we decided we liked "Tobey" and it fit him. So his registered name is Coupari Tob'ear Mhoire. And as many of you know him....Tobes!

Gussie....well, he just looked like a Gus and it was a good Scottish name. But we struggled and struggled with a registered name for him. We decided to keep it simple because he was a straightforward, one of a kind kitten so he is Earmark Gus is Gus.

Celi :-D Yes, Leroy is just as bad (and as darn cute) as that Disney alien character

My now GA gerbils got their names in various ways. Gromit was named after the dog Gromit in those British Wallace and Gromit tv shows/movies. Bernie was named after a college professor who loves having an animal named after him. Bertie Bott was named after those jelly beans in the Harry Potter books and movies. Gibbs full name is Leroy Jethro Gibbs after one of the main characters in the NCIS tv show. Abby was sort of named after the gotch forensic expert in the NCIS tv show. Scooter was sort of named in memory of a Catster.com friend's cat who went to the Bridge not long before I got the gerbil.

Loved reading how everyone else's cats got their names :-D

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

All these great stories! Love it!! There are so many originals names on this site, we feel so boring LOL

We are so not original...But we do have a lot of nicknames.

Tom was just a tomboy. He was the smallest kitten jumping over all the others. He was just a Tom. Tom was: Tomnado, bugger, mighty hunter.

Minnie: DH said Minnie (as in mouse) I was thinking Mini (as in tail - she's a Manx we think). Minnie is also: Minniemoo, biddy, fatso, wackadoo cat, piggy.

DD was 6 when she and Sunrise picked each other. She is a tortie that the foster mom had named Dawn, because of the orange spot that looks like the sun on one side of her face. DD wanted to put her own twist on the name and renamed her Sunrise. Sunrise is also: chicken, chickendoodle, purrball, furball, chicky, circus cat, cutie, sunny.

Marjorie and Gracie said:

This is actually similar to my civvie Frankie's story! Frankie was just days old when she was on THE cart at the shelter, but the rescue group walked in just in time. After that, she developed a very serious herpes infection when she was just 3 weeks old; no one thought she would survive. She did, but it was believed that the infection left her blind. When everyone else had given up hope on her, the rescue's vet insisted on treating her. It turned out she wasn't blind, although she did lose a good portion of her sight. But, since she survived so many obstacles in such a short time, I knew someone was looking over her, so she is named after St Francis of Assissi, patron saint of the animals.

Mario is named after "Super Mario," since DH used to be an addict.

Petey is named after our cars, PT Cruisers, because when they first came out, we were both addicted.

Zen was named by DH because he's into the whole Zen Buddhism thing.

I named Noah after the guy with the big boat and all the animals.

And you know Trix's story!

I'm loving all these stories...they're so touching!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Carl - I wonder if being the runt of the litter has anything to do with becoming a sugar-cat?

Grayson's mom was abandoned by my neighbors when they moved, one cold (for here) March day. Of COURSE she came in - she looked like she was ready to pop, and the babies would NEVER survive! A B/W tux, the mom became known as Tedi - for Teadora (MY translation "you are adorable to me"). The five babies were born 2 weeks later. Because I was completely inexperienced about sexing kittens, I did the logical thing. I googled "kitten sex". DO NOT DO THAT ON A WORK COMPUTER!
So, in lieu of that, I found nice unisex names for the kittens.

They were born starting at 3 am on Palm Sunday in 2007. The firstborn is Palmer. After her came Alex (Alexandra), Franki (Francesca), and two gray kitties. They were originally known as "Big Gray" and "Little Gray". Ironically, Little Gray was Grayson. Big Gray, who was a ball of fluff, became Ashley. Alex was adopted by a friend of mine and is now known as Samantha. She was a big black ball of fluff. The others are DSH. Grayson attempted to be adopted by another friend, but their 18 yr old cat wasn't taking to having a kitten... so he boomeranged. When Grayson "blossomed" to a 22# cat, I was glad we changed their names!

Grayson was the only boy, and I believe he was the last kitten born. By the time he arrived, Tedi was exhausted! I had to help and encourage her to clean him... so I wonder if that had any impact on his condition, 7 years later? (Carl - your next research project!).

Grayson has 2 dogs and a house full of siblings, so we'll share more in a later thread!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Amy, great idea, and I love all the stories. Maggie was a very young feral kitty living in a ravine below a huge apartment complex where I used to live 13 years ago. How she found me is amazing, as I lived two buildings further up the hill from her ravine home and quite a walk for such a half pint kitten. The maintenance man used to watch her sneaking around the cars out of humans' sight and run up to the 2nd floor of my end apartment where I had food for a neighbor's kitty. This neighbor's kitty (Bob) was left outside on its own too often, so I began feeding Bob, or you could say, Bob demanded I feed him!. Maggie somehow found her way up to my apartment looking for food, too! I don't know if perhaps Bob invited her. After eating, Maggie would run down the sidewalk to the building below and into her ravine home with the other feral kitties. Later she had a litter of babies down the hill from me in some shrubbery, closer to my apartment so she could have easier access to food. The babies disappeared before a neighbor and I were able to rescue both Maggie and babies. Maggie came upstairs and just laid at my doormat or upstairs behind a neighbor's planter. I bought a little bed for her and left it outside my door on the walkway, as she was too frightened to come inside. She slept in it night and day. Even my next door neighbor who did not like cats commented on how sad she looked! Eventually she learned to trust me and I slowly brought her inside. I was then able to take her to the Vet for shots and spay . I learned that another Tenant named her Maggie, as he had been feeding her before me, but then had to move. She knew her name, so I left it as Maggie

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Oh, I love this condo. It makes all the kitties, that much more 'real'

Checkbook, aka Checkers, was born in a barn. His mama was killed in the road. The owner didn't know there were kittens in the barn, until three of them came stumbling out, starving and very sick.
The children brought the kittens next door to my daughter, who was a licensed wildlife rehabber at the time, to see if she could save them, because they had no money for the vet.
Susan took them, got them meds, was able to save two. I had no experience with cats and didn't care about her kittens.

Couple months later, she wanted to go out of town; hubby couldn't care for the kitties; she asked me to take them for a week.
I told her, "yeah, but I ain't gonna like it, and don't even hope I'll keep them!"
" I don't care about cats, and I can't afford more vet bills"......I had a sick doggie at the time.

She retorted....."heehee, you can call one of them Checkbook" So I did!

That was 16 years ago. I fell madly in love with Checkbook, and his beautiful smoke, long-haired, sister, Samantha.(GA)

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Alice was our only cat whose name we chose. We rescued her from a gang of boys chasing her with bats and sticks. She was grateful to have a home (she had been thrown away). She just seemed like an "Alice": an old fashioned looking small, round black cat of indeterminate age. We thought at first that she was an old lady, but she lived with us for 11 years. She loved classical music.

Stu and Rusty came to us with their names, Stu from the ASPCA shelter in Manhattan (2 weeks after 9/11; previously he had been returned twice!), Rusty as a DCIN kitty who needed to be rehomed because he needed to be the only kitty in the household. Rusty was originally named 'Teddy" by the shelter volunteers in Plymouth MA, where he was picked up by animal control in 2008 and found to be diabetic. He was so loving, even after what he must have gone through on the streets, that he was like a teddybear. Claudia, who fostered him for DCIN for several years, told me that at some point in his early rescue history he was named Rusty, and that the name was sometimes given as 'Rustin'. (Phoebe passed on all of his paperwork to me and 'Rustin' is indeed found on some of the vet invoices.)

Of course, as we know from "Old Possum's Book of Practical Cats", every cat has one name for himself that only he knows.

This is a fun Loose Lips condo. Thanks to all for such great stories.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Our civvie Turnup was named long before we got her. Our son begged for a cat when he was little but we were moving around a lot. He said he wanted a girl kitty and he was going to call her Turnup. We didnt understand and thought he meant the vegetable. He explained that when someone said "Where's your kitty?" He would say "Oh, she'll turn up.". The humor of a 4 year old. We moved to Tulsa 3 days before he started first grade. As a surprise, DH and I went and got him a kitty on his first day of school. She has been Turnup ever since.

Turnup ended up attaching herself to DH so 3 years later we let our son get another kitty. DH is a gourmet cook and Mason loved tarragon in everything. On the way to pick out a kitty Mason said he wanted a gray kitty and he was going to name it Tarragon. Of course our gray kitty turned black in a few months but Tarragon is definitely the perfect name for him. He and Mason were inseparable all the way from 4th grade through high school.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Simon already had his name when I got him--he was surrendered to my aunt's vet clinic.
But I like to call him Simonese because he has some points like a Siamese or Birman, and also has booties.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

I love this condo!! What a wonderful idea!

I always had cats growing up. They would follow be home from the school bus stop, I would rescue them from trees, I would "adopt" them from my aunt's farm, my friends would give me kittens and I would tell my parents they were "just visiting" . I was a cat magnet! And I had been through so many kitty names! When I purchased my first home, I knew I had to have a cat to rule over the palace ;-) A fluffy little white kitten found his way to my shoulder and purred instantly. He had chosen me and that's all there was to it. But what was I going to name him??? I wanted to get to know his personality before sticking him with a run-of-the-mill cat name like I had done so many times as a child. He was a very random kitten with spastic fits from climbing up window screens, to cuddling on my lap, to running up and down the stairs after absolutely nothing, back to purring in my face. So he went for nearly two weeks, nameless, because I couldn't quite decide on the perfect name. Finally, in an extremely random (and very public) moment, I had a brilliant idea about something (don't even remember what) and jumped up and shouted "Yahtzee!" And then I immediately followed with, OMG... that's what I'm going to name my cat! It was perfect for his random tendencies and for the sensation when he chose me (it really was an instantaneous Eureka! moment).

My civie cat Tango was so-named by the rescue shelter who saved him from being left outside a barn by his mother at about a week old. This name seemed cute to me since I had just returned from a visit to Argentina where I was chosen (not exactly willingly ;-) ) by a native gent to dance the tango in a restaurant with MANY people watching. What a great way to remember one of the more embarrassing moments in life!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

I actually didn't name Shadow, my daughter did when she was 5.
In 2000, we had the cerro grande fire in Los alamos and when we came back after evacuation, my daughter was starting kindergarten and she wanted a cat.
So she and I went to the santa fe shelter and I wanted a fiesty kitten and long hair. Those were the two criteria at the time.
There were several litters of kittens and when I ran my hand across the floor like a spider, this little tuxedo came out and pounced on my
hand. We chose her and took her home. The shelter had her name as Mittens ( white feet) but my daughter really wanted the name Shadow.
I was extremely hesitant.

My first personal dog was a black pomeranian I named Shadow. That was 3rd grade to my senior year in high school. She and I were
inseparable and I even took her on dates. (same boyfriend during H.S.) She died at 9 yrs old. Seems like she was poisoned ( long story of why I think that now and I even kinda believe now it was that boyfriend who did it)
I grieved so very very hard my senior year and started college with 2 years of grief couseling.

So to have another with that name? But my daughter really wanted the name and I caved and agreed. By the time Shadow was 5 months old
and really a shared kitty with my daughter, was when they had the accident. My daughter all dressed for church on a sunday morning
laid on the bed watching tv wih Shadow and rolled off the bed , didn't let go of Shadow and landed on her.
My daughter was crying because she was hurt and told me what happened and it dawned on me to go hunt for the cat who was in her
closet hiding and shuddering hard. She was in so much pain. We took her to ER 30 miles away and they determined her ball joint
in her left hind leg was sheared off. She had surgery to have the ball removed ( no worries since she was an indoor cat, it wouldn't
affect her much) and Shadow was traumatized by the whole experience. While she recovered , I slept in the trundle bed with my daughter
and the cat took to me completely and I did to her.
She is the first cat I've ever bonded so hard too. So she became mine but I didn't name her as the name has tremendous baggage for me.

My own cats , often named by my mother and agreed on by me, were Pharoah, Phaon, Phalesa, Phaedra, Pfizbin ( start trek card game)
and FUTHARK ( first letters of the runic alphabet) and then Heidi ( adopted from someone else ) .

Shadow, of course, is my favorite cat ever! cat_pet_icon

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

These stories are all so endearing - it's so nice to hear people speak so fondly of our furry friends. Great condo! I'm so glad people get why they share their lives with animals - big hugs to all!! :YMHUG:

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Karre, the Emperor of Basically Everything, was one of three brothers. My husband found them under the roof of his house in Pretoria when they were ten days old, and as their mother was nowhere to be seen - presumably because someone had taken her into an animal shelter, or into their home, not knowing she had a litter of kittens - he got them out and took them in. Karre was the only black kitten. His brother Lucci was white and gray, and the thrid boy, Beni, was all grey with a faint tabby pattern. They share my husbands birthday, and they also appeared in his life when he needed true friends more than ever, so we think of them as his angels. DH was a teenager at the time, and he and his family moved down to Cape Town weeks after the kittens were found, so they went on their first cross-country trip. Beni, sadly, went missing before the big move. Karre (pronounced cah-ree) and Lucci (pronounced looky) were named after a pair of beloved fictional characters from Bavarian folklore who are frequently the leading "characters" in regional jokes.

When Lucci died of cancer on the 4th of July 2009 - his own Independence Day, I always think - we were devastated. He was PTS at home, surrounded by the beans who loved him and with his brother watching over his departure. Karre was inconsolable to weeks, mourning and searching for his brother. His grief and his loneliness were palpable.

And then Magpie made her moment. I had met her a few months before Lucci died, at our local animal shelter. She was a terrified 3-month-old kitten living in one of the shelter's "cat gardens" with several dozen other cats. I would sit in front of the bushed under which she was hiding, seeing her peeping out, wide-eyed, for hours. I kept going every few days, whenever I could make time. After about two months, she popped her head out from under the bushed. After another month, she came all the way out, sitting there poised to flee at any moment, but clearly wanting contact. One day she seemed to decide I was her friend, walked over to me, curled up in my lap, and started chirping at me like a bird. I knew she was mine. She is my soulcat. Me in a cat. And I knew she needed a bird-name. Since she was black and white, and had stolen my heart never to return it, it was clear: She was Magpie. And when it became evident that Karre wanted a companion to console him through his sorrow, Magpie came home with us.

She had been horribly abused, which was why she was so terrified of everyone and everything and still vanishes at the first sign of strangers approaching. When she was still a kitten, someone kicked her in the face so hard that a tooth broke. She ended up at DARG because someone saw he being thrown out of a moving car's window like a piece of garbage. During her first few days with us in her new home, she refused to come out from under the bed except to use the litterbox. But after a couple of weeks, she grew more and more confident, and began making friends with Karre. Since Karre was the Emperor, she became his Queen. They are each other's great love. Magpie, or Maggie as she's often also called, not only stole my heart, but she also steals meat whenever she can  Ostrich and oryx are her favourites. When we're cooking, and turn around for a second, she'll try to get her share. She really is a Magpie. And she really does chirp like a bird.

Our next arrival was Pepita, so named because she had little black peppercorn spots on her tummy, and "Pepita" reminded us of various words for "pepper." She was our little African Wild Cat, and true to form, she returned to the wild - we live in a mountain estate with wild forest and fynbos behind our house and beautiful mountains - after spending two happy year with us. We miss her every day.

Enter - the Little Prince, Luca. We met him at our local animal shelter. He had been found with his sister (whom we would have named Lola - she was a feisty calico girl) - they both had been tossed out like trash and were severely starved and dehydrated when they were found. DH and I visit the shelter often, and I wasn't there that day with the intention of adopting a new kittne, let alone two. But there was something about this little white-and-charcoal spotted baby boy. When I went into the room where he and his siter were staying, she ignored me, but he came right up to me, scrambling up my trousers mewing as loudly as he could. I sat down, and he climbed up my jumper, and so I leaned back, and he sat on my chest, right above my heart, purring and purring and staring straight at me, never once looking away. He had me. I called my husband and told him there was a cat here he had to meet. So he came and met him, and Luca behaved the same way with him. We said we'd sleep on it for a night. We always intended to take them both, so the siblings could grow up together. But when we got there the next morning, knowing the decision was made, his siter had been adopted. So there was our new little boy, alone, and we took him home. On the drive, we were chatting about names, and realized that we both had had the very strong feeling that this kitten was so much like Karre's brother Lucci... He even resembled him. And without discussing it, DH and I had both been searching for names that would resemble Luccis' name, and had both come up with "Luca." And so Luca became Luca. He is love in a fur coat.

And finally, there was Henry. He was actually named by the animal shelter staff. His name was the only one out of all of our rescued cats that we didn't change. It was HIS name, and it suits him perfectly. He is a stoic, strong, gentle giant Coon Cat. He is the first adult cat we've ever adopted, and now that he's been with us just over 2 months, we're realizing more and more how different it is to adopt a fully-grown tomcat. We're amazed that we ended up with a Maine Coon as our first adult adopted furbaby, since they mature so slowly and often stay kittenish for years and years - how lucky is that!

Those are our stories.
Thanks for this thread - it's lovely to read!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Thank you all for sharing your stories, and thank you Amy for starting this. :-D
I see lots of people missing. I hope you will also share.

I know of a kitten who got adopted, because she chewed on her prospective bean's shoelaces, but don't know how she got her name. ;-)

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

We got Neko when she was 11 months old. I had been in between cats for all of three weeks and missing having a cat quite badly. As we were on our way from grocery shopping one day, I said to DH, "can we just stop in at the shelter and see what they have?". An always fatal move! My previous cat had been a silver tabby persian (adopted at age 4) from someone at work, but had never been a lap cat. I was tired of the every second day brushing to keep the knots away. My criteria based on the previous cat was "not long haired, younger than 4, and a lap cat". So we went into the shelter, and gave the cats there the lap test.

We started on the near set of cages with the shorter haired cats, but none seemed to last on the lap. Finally we went to the back side, where this 11 month old cat named "Pishie" was housed, she was described as a medium haired cat. This was her second time back at the shelter (SPCA at the time). The first time as a stray at age 7 months, then returned because the young child "was allergic". That is sometimes true, but having spent time since working at a shelter, I know that saying someone is allergic is the easiest way to return a cat. Anyway, "Pishie" passed the lap test with flying colours. She sat on first my lap, then DH's lap and felt no inclination to get up right away. She had us hooked and came home with us that day.

Neither of us liked the name Pishie, it sounded like a young child had tried to say Pussy or something like that. It didn't suit her at all. I wanted something that reflected her black and white nature, her yin and yang. The closest we got, after two weeks of trying various names and scouring through foreign language dictionaries, was Neko, which is the Japanese word for cat. DH and I are software people, and back in the early days of Sun computers, someone from Japan had written a program that turned your computer cursor into a mouse with a cat chasing it. It too was called Neko. It seemed to work for us. Dr. Lynn Griffin, the radiation oncologist at CSU, who treated Neko with SRT, is one of the few people who recognized what the name means.

There is a singer, Neko Case, who lives in the PNW. Check out her tunes on Youtube. One day when I was working at the shelter doing dog licensing, someone came in to license their new dog called Neko. I told her the meaning of the word. She called her Neko anyway. At least she was black and white. :-D

The medium hair thing didn't work out. I should have known by the length of her tail fur. Her adult coat came in and Neko definitely has long hair, but I can get away with twice a week instead of every two day brushing.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Ruby was named after the Cat Steven's song RubyLove. She goes by Ruby, Rubes, Rubinski, RubyLove, Rubesy, RubyRoo...and the list goes on and on. She likes to sit on the toilet lid while I'm in the shower and I make up new lyrics to "RubyLove" and "Ruby Don't Take Your Love to Town".

When I adopted Midgie the shelter had named her...I kid you not...Shelley Fabares. She was just a teeny little ball of fluff. I knew that there was no way that name was staying. Midgie came from "midge", which is a teeny little bug. She gets called Midgie, Midget, Midgers, Little, Kitten, Bug, and Monkey.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Great thread :) I'm loving reading all the stories.

My Cleo was named by mistake! She's a black-and-white tuxedo cat, and when she was a kitten I thought she looked a lot like the kitten in Pinocchio. As it turns out though, I misremembered the names of the animals in Pinocchio. I thought Cleo was the cat and Figaro the fish -- and so I named my cat Cleo. As it turns out, the FISH is named Cleo in the movie, so I have a cat named after a fish

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Blackie showed up on our porch one day with 2 siblings, and their momma when they were all kittens. I was able to tame Blackie, but not so much her brother, and definitely not her sister. She was solid black, except for a very small bit of white on her left shoulder. Now, I don't think that she has that anymore. Her siblings perished (we live in a rural part of the county), and she survived. Not sure what became of her momma, though. Before she got fixed, she was pregnant, and gave birth to 5 kittens under our bedroom (1 kitten died a week later.. It was Blackie's first and only litter). We moved them from under the bedroom outside, to inside the house. DH wanted them to stay in a box, but Blackie had other ideas, and moved them individually to under our bed. Eventually, she decided that behind the couch was a better place for them all. I loved it as I saw them grow, and open their eyes. I also named them all. Blackie had given birth to 1 black kitten, which I named (Blackie) Jr. Mint, and 3 tuxedoes named Groucho, Tiny and Daisy. Daisy was named because of one of her feet has a black main pad, and the surrounding smaller pads are all pink, like a Daisy. She and I bonded very well from the beginning. She will run around the house, look at me, meow, and wait for me to go to bed before jumping up on the bed and snuggle herself between my knees. Blackie's my baby, but she never sleeps in the bedroom with us. There are times that she'll sleep on the floor on one of the pillows, but never on the bed. Blackie knows that I take care of her as best as I can. She seldom ever goes to my DH. In fact, hardly any one of my cats do, except for Scooter, who was his cat before he met me, and Bubba, who is Scooter's nephew.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

Moonie & her Brother Copper (GA) were just little kittens when we found them peeking at us from the next yard! We had come back from Vermont trip, with our dear dog Pumpkin, and my neighbor told me "there's 2 kittens near the bird feeder trees..UH OH we said--We had no intention of getting too involved with them, because my DH has asthma, & there was no way we could take them in!!
So we went out & looked at them!! There in the bushes under a big pine tree, were these beautiful Copper eyed and Shiny Moonstone green color eyed kittens about 3 mths old!!! Hence, Copper & Moonie(Moonstone)-
We bought a dog igloo & fed them turkey & cat food outside for 3 mths, they would sneak in our side door & check out Pumpkin, The house & DH..Moonie always stayed near our door in the flower garden, Copper was the hunter & traveler-Once they were 6 mths We decided to spay MOOnie as she was going to go into heat--Captured in a squirrel cage, off she went to vet, who advised us she had to stay in our house for a week @-) @-) @-) -Copper would climb the screen door looking for her & crying--Moonie was inside--DH was OK--
Off Copper went Neutered, & in he came to our lives--They were in our house ever since...
I believe they were my Mother's gift to us from Heaven on my special birthday..Yes they were a GIFT the best Gift!

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

I love all these stories about how our fur babies got their name(s).

I didn't name either of my cats. I adopted Zeus from the humane society animal shelter. He picked me, he came running up to me and kept rubbing his body against my legs as he walked all around me. The name just fit, I have a picture of him sitting up, kind of posing, and he just looks like a king... King of the gods. He doesn't act like it though, he is such a mellow cat.

A year later we inherited my Aunt's cat Smokey. She is a very pretty grey color - hence the name.

What I really enjoyed reading though is how even though the cats have "official names", many of them have nicknames as well. Zeus is often called Zeus-E, but sometimes Mr. Zeus, Bud or Buddy. Smokey on the other hand, I normally call her Miss or Missy, (affectionately) Old Lady and the Boss. She truly is bossy. When I first inherited her, she would come out of the bedroom and meow at me then walk back into the bedroom. She would repeat this many times until I finally got up and followed her. She was telling me it was time for bed. It was the funniest thing when I finally figured out what she was doing.... But it was only around 9 pm and I wasn't ready for bed, LOL! She rules over Zeus as well, if she doen't want him on the furniture, she practically only has to look at him, or sniff in his direction and he jumps down.

Re: 9/8 Loose Lips - What's the story behind your kitty's na

LOVE this condo AND Binksie, we've missed you!!!!

Zener's first name (when we thought he was a she) was Xena, Warrior Pussy. And we also adopted a yellow female manx at the same time, Gabby the Tabby. Both were rescue kittens. When we got them home, the shelter called and said, oops, you took the male black kitten instead of the female. Well, it was too late for us by then, hearts were melted. So, he became Zener, named for the man who invented the Zener diode. Liz is an electrical engineer and will have to explain the details.

Our wild thing Gabby was only with us about 6 months and was killed by a car in front of our house. It was heartbreaking and she was our last "outdoor" kitty. Zener was sad being an only fur baby, so Liz rescued another female orange manx from a breeder. We couldn't find the right name for her for weeks. Then Liz saw a woman and a boy on Oprah telling the story about she drove off the interstate on the way to the airport at the wee hours of the morning to pick up her granddaughter. She was injured and stuck in the wrecked car, completely hidden from the road, with no cell phone or way to get help. She expected to die there. Several days later a young boy was picking up scraps along the highway and saw where the car had gone off and she was rescued. She had orange hair just like our new baby, and her name was Tillie Tooter. So, we named our kitten after her, both of them were real survivors.

This is SO funny...I sort of had the same problem with my first kitty, who was also solid black! When I got him, I thought he was a she, and named "her" Pidge, after the female dog in "Lady and the Tramp." Within a few weeks, though, I realized my mistake...but I was stuck and unable to come up with a new "boy" name, so the poor guy ended up being called "Mr Kitty."
