Reuben seems to do higher flatter curves on the PM cycle - lucky for the bean  - so after feeding a big meal at +5 last night I left him up there and went to sleep.

Experimentation to discover how to add carbs to his diet in order to control the tendency to dive in the early hours of the AM cycle are underway. Tiny drops of Honey were tried on the AM cycle yesterday, and HC syrup on the PM cycle.

The bed is now the official peeing area.         At the moment it is covered with giant garbage bags. I^ll strip it, cover it in plastic and put a litter box on it this morning.

But, Why.

He is drinking a lot of water.

He has 24 hours to straighten out and fly right, then it`s off to testing.

The hiney-cam(©Leslie) came on long enough last night to divulge the pertinent and happy news that all is well in poopy-land. Bravoooo!!!! One less case on detective bean's desk! 1/16 tsp of miralax was employed to aid the investigation.

Ongoing Medications:

50mg Clavamox bid
2.5mg Pepcid bid
.08ml Bupe as needed ( daily until 9/1then on 9/5; 9/6 )
miralax suspended 9/1;
1/16th tsp 9/6 at 10pm. Prezzi followed shortly thereafter

Hi guys .. I'm glad you are experimenting and trying to figure out what works best for reuben and his drops .. Sorry to hear he is not feeling well  No idea on why he is peeing outside the LB .. have you ruled out infections? Maybe it is because he just simply does not feel well? Does he have a hard time getting in the LB? Maybe others will have more ideas .. have a great weekend guys!

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291

Hi Alexa, Sorry Reuben is not feeling well and still peeing on the bed. If he will use the litter box on the bed that will give you a clue. Glad to hear your hiney-cam  has ruled out poop issues, one less thing to worry about.

For your food experiments, have you considered non-sugar options to add some carbs? I am not a nutrition expert, just wondering if adding a bit of peas or other vegetable might work? I have a list of low, medium, and high glycemic foods, the glycemic index is meant to help choose healthy human snacks which might give you some ideas. Just a thought, I hope those with more food knowledge can help you figure it out.

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291

Hi Leslie -

That sounds like something worth investigating, thank you! Would you mind sending the data?

Please say Hiiiiiiiiiiii to Jasper for us, if you run into him there at the Falls

Get well soon Reuben. Those numbers are not bag, come down more, boy.

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230

Hi ALexa!

It doesn't *look* like a drama-cycle is forthcoming this time  Though Reuben may well make me eat those words, just to show us all who's boss!

You did great getting here! It's a bit of a waiting game at this point, to see where he'll take this.

Can I ask what your reasoning was, please, in giving HC gravy this morning? (Given his starting out in the low pink/high yellow range, I think it may have been a decent option to feed only LC, that's why I'm wondering about your choice.)

Any questions you want to put out, in the meantime?

Hugs

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230

Hi Jane, thanks for looking in on us!

Yeah, it is in my better interest to make decisions *after* thinking them through with someone, hahaha!!

I used HC because last night at shot time he was at 226, and I had been advised to give 1 tsp of HC gravy at that pre-shot meal. So this morning he was at 304, and I was a dunce and did the same thing!!!

Like I said, I realllllly need to be having conversations to think things through before I make these decisions - especially in the morning when I am half awake! I just go into total knee-jerk reaction mode, and forget everthing I learned.

Stress is so much fun!!!

Aww, I'm sorry the stress is getting to you! And poor Reuben with his LB-confusion! You do have such a lot going on. Hang in there, ok? You really are doing very well, and we're all going to try and help you as you keep making progress.

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230

well this too shall pass. :-D

I had a different question for you though somewhat related.
I had just been looking up some canned foods and wondered if you had a store that has any of the ones we are all using where you can
have a backup for some gravy in urgent situations.

I found that amazon does ship to mexico thru the international site and they have many varieties that are on the acceptable list.
I remember ( sorta fuzzy) that you were having some difficulties in the beginning getting some supplies and wondered where
you are ordering from.

I know you were feeding homemade and also wondered if you added all the supplements that are recommended and necessary by
Dr. Pierson . http://catinfo.org/?link=makingcatfood

I wouldn't be worried about starting numbers in the 300s/high 200s.
I would wait until a lower number to start adding carbs to slow down those drops. You pick the number you are comfortable with
and when you are around to monitor.
Down the road you will want to get more of those green numbers.

Alexa, down here in Africa it's coming up on dinner time - are you alright for now? If you are, I'd sign off for the night, but I'll try to do a quick check before sleepus, k?

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230 +4/238

Hi Alexa!

Reuben is surfing the yellows today instead of bouncing so that's something good about where he's at today! It's a big step that he didn't bounce after all the blues yesterday.

I wanted to make sure you understood why it was right to give the hc last night when he was in the 200's but not this morning. Last night we wanted him to be safe while you went to sleep so having him maintain a little higher number than would have been preferable in the daytime was the right thing. This morning when you're going to be awake all day to monitor him, we do not want to try to steer his numbers unless we have to intervene for safety. We want to let him go low and gain reductions and not intervene until he needs help coming back up (below 50). If he's running high (300-400's), we want to make his food a little more watery but his food is so low carb that you just have to put enough water to make sure he's getting some. If he's going to bounce, it's okay. He'll get used to that number that's making him bounce and not do it anymore. Please ask questions if you don't understand anything I said or would like further explanation on any of it.

Also, I know you're trying to gather data on Reuben right now but since he's doing that peeing thing and something is bothering him, maybe you should give him a break and not test every hour when he's not super low but test every 2 hours instead. That is probably making him tense also. I think he's going to surf all day today so it might be a good idea to get the flea stuff you need if you can also (after his +6). The sooner you get that done, the sooner you can see if that's what the problem that's making him pee inappropriately is. Just some thoughts.

Don't get too stressed, Alexa. Give yourself a break. You are doing great!!! You just started this. No One is a pro overnight. Everyone makes mistakes even when they've been doing it a long time. ;-) You haven't made one important mistake that put him in danger! That's what's important. It's a learning curve.

Hugs,
Melanie & Racci

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230 +4/238 +5/249

Hi Melanie -

Oh that`s a great idea to deal with finding the flea stuff for the house today. Okay, I`ll test +6 and then go out and pay bills and find the flea stuff, do other errands and give the poor boy a break.

Yes, I understand now why we gave hc last night and why it was not what he needed today. It's good know how to 'park' him in yellows for bean sleeping or other emergencies though, and I have that data now. It worked both from a low 200's PMPS number and a low 300's AMPS number. Very.Good.To.Know.

Thanks for your encouragement!

I`ll get the +6 and then dash out for a while.

Thanks sooooo much Melanie!

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +1/291 +2/266 +3/230 +4/238 +5/249

No problem Alexa! I'll be on and off all day so if you need me holler. I'll check in on you though.

I try to do all my running around based on Racci's hi & lo days and give her (& me) a break from testing as much on her high days. You have to learn to plan around their days so you can get a break and give him a bit of a break too. If his +6 is still a safe surf than it will be safe for you to do what you have to do.

I always give Racci a full lc meal before I go to bed to hold her over while I'm sleeping and keep her safe. Since your food had no carbs at all, & I don't know Reuben that well yet I had you put a little syrup but would rather just give him lc also, just a nice filling meal before bed.

Hi Rhiannon -

I appreciate your thoughts on our situation immensely  I hadn`t checked Amazon for food, but I will. Shipping charges and customs limitations are a factor, but all options must be investigated!!

I actually use Dr. Lisa Pierson's recipe. I purchased an appropriate grinder (paying high customs fees and shipping charges - this is how I know about them!) to make it, and Reuben`s health improved drastically once he was eating it. The only thing thing I do differently is that I use cooked chicken not raw, or partially cooked like she does. Now it`s an issue of increasing the carbs to that recipe. Peas are being discussed.

Yes, I would like to figure out if Any of the food on the shelves here would be appropriate to use under any circumstance. I`m using the Whiskas Packets for the gravy right now. There is only Friskies and Whiskas canned that I have seen.

And thank you for the 'this too shall pass', just what I needed to hear! And absolutely true

Thanks again for your input and concern, Rhiannon! So much appreciated :YMHUG:

What about Amazon UK? Do you still have to deal with customs, etc if ordered through them?

http://www.amazon.com/b?tag=felinediabetesfdmb-20
I was looking at AmazonGlobal.
They have a Pet supply category on the left.
And then you can narrow down to food, then canned only, then they even have a list of all the brands they carry which was pretty good.

As for friskies, the turkey and cheese shredded with gravy is 12%. Sliced chicken dinner in gravy is also 12%.
Maybe those two are on the shelf nearby.

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +2/266 +4/238 +6/270

Yeah Melanie, Anything coming from Anywhere has to go through customs when it comes into the country.

Okay, now I have to re-read what you told me about de-fleaing the house before I leave, so I know kinda what i`m looking for.

Good Times!!

Reuben just woke up and his eyes look good, they are blue. Momma bean worries less for a second. haha

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +2/266 +4/238 +6/270

Rhiannon,

I`ll bring home the Friskies flavors they have and try to figure out what they are (translate the names eg). civvie zack can eat them if they are un acceptable!

thanks for your research for us, you are so sweet!!

Re: 9/7 Reuben AMPS 304 +2/266 +4/238 +6/270

Alexa, Make sure you read the directions. You will probably need several bombs for different areas of the house and stuff for Reuben again at the same time. You want to do the cat and the house together so they don't jump from one to the other and the bombs cover a certain amount of square footage.

You'll have to plan it for a nice day since you need to take him out of the house to do it and keep him out a few hours. Check the powder carefullly too. Adams is just for the house not the cat too. There are some for cats but they don't work very well on the house.

Hi Alexa, just stopping in to see how you are Reuben are tonight. So sorry he is not feeling well and the lb issues. Good luck with the flea powder and everything.

The search for anything that would work to get rid of the flea problem produced exactly -- nothing! So I ordered 2 Adams bombs and 2 carpet powders from PetSmart. The shipping to MX costs more than the order, but who Cares!

I found fancy feast at a store I hadn`t shopped in before. I`m on the FF site trying to figure out what the US equivalent is of the 2 flavors they sell here. Looks like *maybe* grilled chicken feast in gravy. They list the ingredients on the site, and as soon as I find my magnifying glass so I can read the ingredients on the can (seriously, that SMALL!! Lol) I`ll see if it is a match.

I bought a new litter box and put it on the bed and voila! That`s what he wanted. But, he still feels realllllly badly. He eats well, LB stuff all fine, drinks a lot, but just sits hunched up all.the.time. I gave him bupe tonight hoping it would help, and it didn`t. He won`t let me hold him. He doesn`t go anywhere or do anything at all. Something appears to be wrong.

Tomorrow we go to the vet!

Just stopping in to say hi. You are making great progress with Reuben! I hope he gets to feeling better. Sending healing energy to your handsome guy.
Liz

Hi Alexa,

What a drag that he's feeling so poorly. I think it's a good idea to take him to the vet and make sure nothing else is brewing. I hope the vet doesn't find anything else wrong and it's just what we already know about. Is he getting his pain meds often enough? I'm glad Reuben liked his new litter box. Poor boy.

I can't believe you had to special order the flea stuff! What a drag! I hope it gets there quickly. Maybe combing him and a lot of vacuuming and floor cleaning will help in the meantime.

I'm going to bed now. I keep falling to sleep on the keyboard. Have a good night. I hope you can get him in to the vet tomorrow

Hugs & Goodnight!
