Good morning!!! Not much going on around here. Garland is lounging in an open window sill enjoying the breeze, and I have my ~O) :-D

YESTERDAY

People were mentioning bounces yesterday.. what is a bounce?

Karrie- How do I know how to adjust my tube feeds when she eats canned food too? Yesterday she ate a whole 3 oz can of FF.... Also, when her tube came out that little bit before I got it restitched, should I be worried when I pushed it back in, that it moved it around wrong on the inside? Like its not where its supposed to be at the other end? Just curious. Not sure what made me start wondering about that....

Sounds like life is good at your house. I love to have the windows open early in the morning when it is still nice and cool. Tarragon and Turnup love it too.

Hope you have a great day!

What a totally awesome update.

What times are you finding her appetite the strongest? What flavour of Fancy Feast did she like?

How many cc's/mls of food/water/flush is she getting per feeding now - to know what volume her stomach is handling.

The thing is I don't know how to change up the feeding because of the DKA and diabetes. I do know the two feedings right at shot times are the most important so maybe you should keep these up for sure until she's eating much more on her own.

So those who know diabetes and DKA - calories are important but Garland is showing interest in eating on her own and we want to reinforce this. And her numbers still being up there - I know she isn't out of the woods - so maintaining high calories is still important right?

With a non diabetic cat what we would do would be one of the following. Please don't do any of these until there is a consensus from the diabetes experts on what would be best to try with Garland. You do not want a re-occurrence of DKA.
1. Cut out the feeding that would lead to the longest time without food - like AM or PM. So the cat will eat more on their own.
or 2. Cut back in the amount tube fed at each tube feeding.
or 3. Feeding more food at eat tube feeding, thereby cutting the number of tube feedings.

You would be seeing problems if you messed things up Violet. You'd be seeing nausea, gagging, acid reflux, vomiting. So I think you are good to go.

Too bad you guys weren't over on the FAF site through all of this. She would have been up on our wall of success stories for sure. Maybe I can do a write up later as there are no cats that have had DKA and FHL on the wall. There are a number of diabetic cats getting assist feeding. I refer them all over here for diabetes advice.

Morning!

Well, I notice after a couple hours after a tube feed she comes out and asks for food. Thats when I open a can and give it to her. She doesnt eat much. I sometimes wonder if its bc shes getting over 1.5 of the 5.8 oz cans through her tube every day. Before she got sick, she never at a lot in one sitting. Shes always been a grazer... She ate 3 cans of the small FF cans over 24 hours back then... Coming every 30 min- 1 hour and eating a bit more. I cut out the overnight tube feed I used to to around 3 or 4. So I give her a tube feed around 11/12 and then set out a can of food for overnight, and then tube feed again in the morning around 6/7. The can I set out is usually about half gone.. Last night it was all gone. It was a seafood flake one. She really liked it. Im still having a hard time getting her to eat a lot of the lowest carb ones (Pate, FF classic) Ive been throwing away a lot of food.. $$$$ YIKES LOL Last night I was having a hard time bc she ate a bit more of the canned right before a tube feed and I was unsure how much tube feed to give her, etc... Then she seemed not hungry when I tried (pulled away,etc).. that may be why I started wondering about her tube placement... She was snoozing peacefully after eating some canned at this time, but it was time for her tube feed, I felt like I was forcing it on her, so I stopped and left her alone.

All her tube feedings are on her spreadsheet. There is a 10ml flush with each feed. The self feedings are hard to judge.. Ive been putting food out and then seeing what she does with it. I just know she ate that whole can of seafood flake from 8pm-1am last night LOL

I joined the FAF group when she got the tube, but I dont understand the navigation of the site... I cant find where people are posting things... I only see random "files" (?) thats why I never posted. I need a computer class :-D

This is my first time in Garland's condo but I've been following your situation for a couple of weeks. Let me say that I admire your commitment to Garland so very much. You must be a very loving and special person. Garland is an extremely lucky kitty to be taken care of by you. Keep up the good work and remember that you have all of LL praying for Garland (and you).

Violet, if I recall shot times are at 8a/8p? If so, and you fed this morning at 6a/7a the AMPS may be influenced by the feeding.
(I'm at tbp and can't see ss) General rule of thumb is to not feed within 2 hours before shot time so the PS number is not food influenced.

It''s so fabulous that she ate an entire can of FF overnight!

I think reinforcing her interest in eating on her own sounds like a good idea. As long as overall she is getting the caolries she needs.
Keeping the shot time feedings until she is eating much more on her own sounds resonable. If she doesn't eat enoough on her own in between shots, you can always add another feeding via the tube.

That's my $0.02 :-D hopefully others will chime in

Re: 9/7 Garland AMPS 374 +4 272

Thanks everyone!! Its been pretty here the last few days. After such a heat wave summer, its so nice to have the windows open again and a cool breeze!

----------

Her shot times are 8:30 and 8:30 now. I changed it a little over a week ago because of getting the kids to school, etc... I fed her this morning at 6:30 and got her AMPS at 8:30.

Garland is begging for food a lot.. So thats great news. She seems more and more interested in eating on her own. Now its a game finding out which ones she likes... Tonight I had a big can of Friskies opened for Connick, and it had gravy on it, so I rinsed the Gravy off and gave her the chunks. (It was a Meaty Bits one) She seemed to like that. (thats okay right? The carbs are in the Gravy?)

Well i don't know anything about the gravy food, just wanted to drop in and see how Miss Garland was doing today, she's doing great and I loved her video from the other day.....she really does look good and it made me happy to see her playing.

Have a great evening Violet and Garland!

Hello!
The gravy in HC is where *most* of the carbs are, there's really no way to know what rinsing the gravy off does to the carb % of the remaining meat
I would stick to something 5% or under from Binlys chart. Have the HC on hand for when you need to guide numbers up.
If there's no significant change in Garlands numbers overnight I think it's time for 3.0u in the morning.

Great report on Garland and so glad to hear she is eating on her own some and acting hungry. And sitting in the window!!! It's cool enough there to have the windows open????
