Hi! Mr. Cat was 117 this morning one hour before his usual AMBG. I fed him and then re-tested one hour after food (raw meat only - no carbs) and his BG went up to 141. Usually, his BG goes down after he eats. So... should I forget the OTJ trial? I found out this morning that he has cystitis and will go on meds for his UTI, plus antibiotics for his teeth (his oral surgery was cancelled due to the vet being ill).
I am off to take him to the vet now. So... what should we do?

P.S. The vet found absolutely no glucose in his urine yesterday. She was shocked! :-D

Re: 9/5 Mr.Cat AMBG 141 Day 3 OTJ Trial. What to do?

I would see if the meds bring the numbers back down. Infection and dental issues can raise BG, especially if there is any pain associated with them.

Thanks, Bob. Mr.Cat is definitely in pain. I'll see what happens when we get back from the vet, though the car ride always raises his BG anyway. Cheers!

I agree with Carl. Pain and infection can mess up their BGs. After Fur Ball had his dental, his BGs were way too high for my comfort. But we just kept monitoring him and after he was off the meds and he felt better his numbers are back to normal. Just make sure you find out if there is any sugar in any meds you give Mr Cat.

Hope he feels better soon and you are successful in getting to the falls.

Testing an hour after a meal may reflect a food spike -- even with raw food. Like others noted, an infection will raise BG numbers as will stress, pain, etc. I'd give Mr. Cat a little more time until you're sure what's going on.

Thanks, everyone! We just returned from the vet and Mr.Cat is now on a 14-day course of clindamycin for his tooth (and possibly jaw) infection. He was also given UroMaxx for his cystitis (no UTI but traces of blood in his urine). He is hiding under the couch right now so I'll test later. I'm sure that any test will show elevated numbers due to his car-riding stress. He really hates the car but he loves the vet. Go figure!

Poor Mr. Cat!!

I am sorry you have to be on 2 meds. but they will make you feel better....

funny that he likes the vet....

Curious on how you found out about the non-UTI and blood in his urine. Did you collect the urine at home? And did the vet perform just a basic test (took less than a day for results)...or did they do a culture and sensitivity test?

Congrats on your trial!!!

Yep! You'd think he would freak out at the vet's office but he just looks around, curious about everything. The vet always has a hard time hearing his heart beat because he's purring so loud! :-D The vet also braggs to her other vet friends that she has a patient who pees in a cup at home (Mr.Cat sooo easily volunteers urine samples for me - in a sterile cup, of course). I don't know if the vet did a standard urine test or not. Either way, he's on a pretty full-spectrum antibiotic for 14 days and also a UTI tincture so I think he's covered.

Feel better SOON Mr. Cat so you can stop worrying your mommy! Elian says not to ditch him on the trial - hopefully things will settle down now that you're back home and out of that scary car. Will check back in on you tomorrow.
