PMPS 337 2/358 3/344 4/389

Reuben spent 7 hours in the blue lagoon yesterday; arriving an hour later than the day before, and staying an hour longer. He was active for most of the day, as opposed to the first day which he spent mostly sleeping. Upon arrival to the pool, he dipped a little below, and then above, the 150 range before settling on it for 3 hours. In hour 5 he dipped down 25 points preceeding a rapid rise, as though getting a good foothold to bounce back up to the old 'comfort' zone for the PMPS. He stayed consistently an hour 'behind', arriving almost a full 100 points lower to the PMPS than the day before. The night cycle was even higher than the night before, actually rising from PMPS 337 to +4/387 before I fell asleep and did no more testing.

The Pepcid continues to work (Anti-Jinx), giving 2.5mg 30 before each shot meal. He felt wan in the late afternoon again - around +9 - +10, just sitting and looking low and that was when his numbers starting rising.

P's seem to be okay - as Sienne pointed out, he has less appetite with lower numbers, so I`m not worried. The free peeing in the shower is irritating but, as I was reminded, certainly much less irritating than say, free peeing on the carpets or furniture (BIG Anti-JInx!! haha) . Whey DO they do this, any clues?

Ongoing Medications:

50mg Clavamox bid
2.5mg Pepcid bid
.08ml Bupe as needed (last dose 9/1 in 3 p.m.)
miralax was suspended 3 days ago,

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221

Hi guys .. wahoooo for such a long time at the lagoon yesterday! And it looks like he's headed back down there already today! I'm glad the pepcid is working and yes, I have to agree, free peeing in the shower is probably the best place for free peeing, if there has to be any at all! Have a great day guys!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97

Thanks guys!

Here we go for the ride - 124 point drop from +2 to +3. I want to steer this and spend the day green. Just gave LC snack and 1/4 tsp honey. Will test in 15 min. Wheeee!! All advice welcome!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97

Wowzers! That is a pretty steep drop from +2 to +3. Keep monitoring that boy. I like to see him in greens, but the definitely the upper end of greens! Low carb may not be enough to keep him level in the greens. Hopefully, someone with more knowledge will come along and advise you! I do love his numbers and will love them even more if he surfs for you... no more diving! Do you hear that, Reuben! Surf...no dive! ;-)

Hope you guys have a great day, Alexa! ~Deborah

My first time steering, just gave 1/2 tsp honey after the +3.5/61

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Sorry if it shouldn`t be a 911 - just trying to make this work!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Got any high carb food on ya? If so, try a teaspoon. You don't want to overload him/fill him up in case you need to keep giving it to him.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Hopefully Sienne or Marje or anyone with more experience than me will be around to help you!!! Here's a bit from the stickies that may help for the moment (I know this is for cats under BG 50, but just in case you get there):

If your cat is testing in low numbers and you are not getting a quick response to your post, there are several things you need to do. (Low numbers are under 50mg/dL or 2.8 mmol/L.)

Depending on how carbohydrate sensitive your cat is, feed approximately a teaspoon or less of food with high carb (HC) gravy or HC food only. (If you have a cat with GI issues, using syrup plus LC food is an alternative.)
Test again in 15 – 20 min. Depending on the numbers, give more HC food.
Repeat the above steps every 15 – 20 min. until your cat tests in the 50 mg/dL (2.8 mmol/L) or above range for 2 consecutive tests. Continue to feed in small amounts to keep numbers in a safe range.
Test in 30 - 40 min. and repeat the test and feed process until there are 2 consecutive tests where numbers are stable or rising.
Test in an hour and follow the same steps.

DO NOT become complacent. If number have risen after one or two tests, it’s important to continue testing. Numbers may bobble up and down as the HC food and/or Karo wear off. DO NOT get one test where your cat has risen from low numbers into the 50s and go to sleep or leave the house. You are putting your cat in a risky situation. When in doubt, leave HC food out.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Sienne is at work so hopefully she'll check around here soon. She was here shortly ago so it might be at least 30 minutes.
I don't know how often she checks or if she has some alert when she gets a pm.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

okay, he`s eating the teaspoon of Friskies turkey pate. he all maaaaaaad cuz he want to go outside and play! haha

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Rhiannon, will you be around for a little bit? I have a class starting right now and hate leaving Alexa without someone to freak out with!!!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

thanks, yeah i have that page up too, i`m gonna check him again right now. you guys ROCK!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Best wishes, Alexa! Glad to hear he's mad!!!! :-D I'm out for a while, but will catch up after classes have ended.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 Steering Guidan

Leave the 911 there until someone with lots of experience shows up and asks you to remove it. That way they'll see it as soon as they log on.

You are going to want to test every 20-30 minutes and use the food sparingly.

When is Reuben's "normal" nadir?

Carl

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

Thank you Deborah! See you in a while, and thank you Rhiannon, for being here :-)

Hi Carl, thanks for being here too  I'd say his nadir is +6 plus or minus, yesterday it was +8 and it can be +5. I`ll test again at +4. Thanks for the advice about the 911, I had taken it off - so I stuck it back on there.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

I think so Rhiannon, let's just hope I didn't give him too much sweet now....

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

Alexa,
Put aside the honey until he dips under 50. The 75 that you just saw is probably from the honey, and most likely won't stay around long.

So you might see a lower number, or he might just cruise along in the 60s and 70s. You should be able to do this with his normal LC food at this point, unless he drops again.

I'll stick around to see what Rueben has planned.

Carl

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

I just peeked in from tbp real quick. It looks like you are doing a fine job.
I would keep feeding small amounts, and keep testing every 30 minutes or so, until he gets into the 80s or starts surfing along real flat like.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

Like Carl said, I would just feed LC, unless he gets into the low 50s or below.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

Hi Dyana! Hi Jane!

Alexa, you can remove the 911 now.

Carl

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75

Hi Jane! Thanks for coming  Isn`t this fun?

Thanks for looking in from tbp Dyana!!

Okay, I`m giving him half an hour from the last test so it`ll be +4.15 the next one, in 5 minutes.

He's in the same green laundry basket that he got into last time he went swimming in the emerald pool.. having a little bath... swweeeeeeet dancing_cat

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/

+4.25/170 Oookay...So next time NOT SO MUCH SWEET, hahahaaaa... Why did I give him the honey instead of the gravy I had just prepared in 1 tsp increments, just for the occassion?? Fear, of course. He was coming down so fast I thought it wouldn`t do the trick. In retrospect, I think that ..... I think that I don`t know yet. But a different combination of the same ingredients probably. Thanks for your help Deborah, Rhiannon, Carl, Dyana and Jane! And cross your fingers for us that we can stay down in the pools for the rest of the day and that I did NOT Carb-Load my boy out of the pools... I hope, I hope, I hope, I hope.....

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/

Alexa,
Reuben had just dropped over 300 points in just over 3 hours, so what you did when you grabbed the honey was perfectly logical and "instinct". I don't think the honey was the culprit in the quick rise to 170. I think that just when you grabbed the honey, his liver had the same instinctive response and did the "bounce" thing.
The next time you see that sort of drop, go with a spoonful of gravy, and keep the gravy handy in case you need it 15 minutes later. In this case, no matter what you had done, I think his liver was going to react anyway. You just can't count on that happening quickly, so you did the right thing in intervening.

I'd test again in 30 to make sure, and he could just surf in the blue water for a while.

Carl

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/

Don't even sweat this, Alexa. Remember our chat in PM-land. This is another good lesson, and equips you with great data for his next quick drop. His carb sensitivity is becoming easier to nail down. That is GREAT to know.

Also, keep in mind that he HAS had late-ish nadirs. I would get a test at (+5), no later. Sound like a plan?

You did BEAUTIFULLY as always. You get a treat. Ice cream? Tequila? (Sorry on that second idea - it's evening here )

Hugs
Jane

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/170 +5

Thank you for the explanation Carl, and Jane - maybe just a splash of Bailey`s in the morning coffee? You guys are the BEST!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3/97 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/

Sorry I couldn't respond sooner. Like Rhiannon said -- I'm at work.

You're doing great and it looked like everyone was lending a hand. I might have reached for the LC before the honey but you'll know to try that the next time. BTW, you give honey or corn syrup in drops, not teaspoons.

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/170 +5

Hi Alexa, I see Reuben took the big dive today to taste the green and came back up already! I hope he settles soon. You will get used to handling low numbers and how Reuben responds to various carbs and will feel less frantic next time. Both of you have a great day!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/170 +5

Good job - the first greens are scary - I know - I've just gotten through my first couple scary greens. The first time I completely forgot about my HC food too! Brain wonky, but after the first time I reviewed all the stickies, and the next time I felt much more confident that I could handle it, and I did. Whew! So I'd suggest reviewing everything, because sometimes you see information you didn't encode the first time because you hadn't experienced it, and suddenly other information starts to make sense.

Have a great rest-of-day!
Lisa

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/170 +5

Great job, Alexa!!! And we now have a picture! Is he crossed-eyed? (Don't tell him I asked that! ) Is he a Siamese?

You are getting awesome results, and you are so attentive! Your cat is going to be a-okay!!!! You will learn to handle these lows all by yourself, but until you are completely comfortable feel free to ask for someone here to hang with you each time!!!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +3.75/75 +4.25/170 +5

Wow! Reuben's SS looks like a different cat the last few days. It is looking so pretty with that blue and green. Great job Alexa. It's amazing how our instincts take over sometimes. A couple of days ago I got a "Lo" on the meter (yes, the meter has those too  ) and I dumped a tsp of HC in the dish before I took a breath and did another reading in the 80's. They get over the carbs and better safe than sorry.

Woohoo!!! Reuben earned his Mr. Greenie icon!   And so did you, Alexa. Well done!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +4.25/170 +6/241 +7/2

Thank you everybody - for all the great advice and encouragement! Sorry i disappeared...Since Reuben was in (more than) safe territory I had to go deal with a remodel emergency (yeah, living AT the remodel is so relaxing.. haha).

Looking at where he ended up, slooooowly rising in the 200's - I think that the first 1/4 tsp of honey might have been enough. And now that I know that honey is doled out in drops, not teaspoons.. well, THAT's going to make a difference!!!

I have a question....The thing is that since he eats home-made food, and there is no doubt in my mind that it is the principal reason why he is well and strong, I am loathe to give him the crummy commercial food we have here when we are in these situations. I think that is *partly* why reached for the honey this morning, and not the gravy which I had literally *just* finished preparing in 1 tsp increments to give, if need be...

Maybe I could make up MC and HC versions of his own food, using the honey to increase the Carbs, and have them on hand? Or some other carb, like rice flour or oat flour or corn starch..... What do you think?

I`ll be around to visit condos in a little bit, still dealing with the house issue...

Thanks so much, you guys are Awwwesome!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +4.25/170 +6/241 +7/2

Hi Alexa,

Neko is on raw food so I am also reluctant to give the gravy, but for us it works. I think it's Sienne who just adds karo to her LC food. There are some kitties who have GI issues with the gravy so the sticky suggests that as a replacement.

Here is a quote from the handling low numbers sticky. Check out the first bullet point.

I haven't had a chance to stop by in a few days....WOW!! Lookit those numbers! Great job today, Alexa!!

Re: 9/4 Reuben AMPS 378 +2/221 +3.5/61 +4.25/170 +6/241 +7/2

You did good today, Alexa! Sorry I couldn't stick around longer...not that I'm qualified to give any advice, but sometimes it's nice just to know that you're not going through all this by yourself! You handled everything well and now we both have more information on how to handle the scary situations! Hope you guys have a lovely night with no scary situations! ;-)

Good night, Deborah & Shasta

Oh HECK! i just wrote a Looooong post and LOST IT, what did I press?? Sheesh!! I`m sooo tired and can`t re'create it.... Thank you Everyone who came to support and comment and advise and encourage today... next time DROPS NOT TSPNS of honey  mixed in his food. Giving it sooner, testing more sooner. Hey, if I could learn to bg test his little ear and inject the insulin, i can learn to do THis!! Right? Right!

Thaaaaaaaaaaaaaaank Youuuuu Alll :YMHUG:
