Mr.Cat came into our room last night and urinated on the floor. This is HIGHLY unusual behavior. He only did it once previously and it was just before he was diagnosed with diabetes. He has no other symptoms of a UTI except he did urinate standing up in his cat box the other day (like he was trying to spray but he's neutered).
Is it possible for him to have a UTI even if he has no other symptoms? I think I'm going to collect a urine sample and take it to my vet (you read that right, I can collect urine samples from Mr.Cat! I just put him in his cat box and when he starts to urinate, I put a cup under him and he goes in the cup. Such a good guy!). Of course, I'm suddenly worried that maybe my BG meter is broken and he has high BG again. Anyway, just wanted to ask if anyone has experience with sudden urinating out of the box (and especially during an OTJ trial!).

I'd have to really think UTI...there shouldn't be any correlation between being OTJ and urinating outside the box. It's a sign of something being wrong, but being off insulin wouldn't be anything I'd think has anything to do with it.

Infection of some kind, change in routine, unknown stress are much more likely the culprits...although it'll just take some detective work to figure out what's going on.

Remember, if it is a UTI, his numbers might be a bit wonky until it's under control.

Edited to add...if you're concerned about your meter, test yourself!! That's the quickest, easiest way to make sure!!

The best way to test the urine to determine if it is a UTI and the proper meds for it, is for the vet to do a C&S (culture and sensitivity) test - this is a urine test that is a sterile capture of urine, unlike getting it after he pees.

Good to know about the C&S test. The only problem is... Mr.Cat always urinates in his carrier when we drive to the vet (those human disposable bed pads are a godsend!). So, if we wait until we get there, he won't have any urine to test. I'll capture at home and hope that he has more when we arrive!

My Ripley tends to have no symptoms whenever she has a UTI (not even peeing outside the box).
The last time I took her in for a C&S test, she urinated on the way to the vet; so they kept her there for a couple of hours until they got a urine sample (while I ran some errands).

PS: Congrats on Day #2!!! Woohoo!!

I took Mr. Cat to the vet with his sterile jar of urine and we'll find out tomorrow what's happening. In the meantime, I tested his BG after food and he went down to 112. Whew!

Happy Day Two. I hope there is no UTI. Good to see his numbers came down.
