Yesterday's Condo

Oy, what a morning I've had!! Looks like Cinco is playing a rerun of yesterday. I just hope he doesn't do that tonight - last night was a long one!

He came out of the lb a few minutes ago, and I went to have a look. I noticed he'd gone poo, but there wasn't much of it. A few minutes later I saw him headed back in that direction, so I followed, just in time to see him stop in his tracks and deposit the rest of his load on the carpet! :o ARGH! I know it's hard for him to get to the box with that stupid cone on - he's constantly bouncing off stuff on the way there, but gee, does he have to go on my carpet? This is why I keep telling DH I don't want new carpeting! :YMSIGH:

Apparently, Harvey decided he wasn't getting enough attention, or that there isn't enough drama in our lives. As I was fixing their fuds this morning, I heard a loud, suspicious "CRUNCH, CRUNCH!", and I looked up just in time to catch Harvey taking a big bite out of my peace lily!! :o The condition of the leaf he was munching on led me to believe it wasn't his first bite. I hollered and he got down, but he didn't spit it out. I called the vet and they said to give him a little hydrogen peroxide to induce vomiting. I asked how much and the receptionist said to start with 1/4 teaspoon. I managed to catch him and squirt it into his mouth far enough that he had to swallow it. Then I went online to vetinfo.com and looked up inducing vomiting in cats. It said to give 1 teaspoon per 5 pounds of body weight. Harvey is a little over 9 pounds, so that would be 9 ccs!!! Yeah, right. It said to wait 15-20 minute after the first dose and to do it again if they didn't vomit. Well, he didn't, so I wrestled him into the cat sack and filled a 5 cc syringe and tried to get it in him. I think I got about 3 ccs in him - the rest was all over both of us. I let him out of the sack then, as it said to make them walk around. I chased him around the house for 10 minutes, but he didn't throw up. He did go to his plate and eat his breakfast and the little bit Minka left on her plate, however! He was acting totally normally the whole time (after he stopped foaming at the mouth). It's now been 3 hours since he ate the plant, and he is fine, but my nerves are shot. I've always known he had a strong constitution. Before I knew that garlic and onion were toxic to cats, we always let him lick our plates, and I use a lot of garlic and onion. He's nibbled on that plant before (although this was more than a nibble) with no ill effects. I moved the plant to a higher, less accessible spot. I don't want to get rid of it - my district manager sent it to me when my mom passed, 11 years ago. I'm pretty sure he can't get to it where it is now. :?

So how was your morning?

Since Cinco has earned a pokey break, I'm taking advantage of the permission slip and running some errands this afternoon.

Sending healing vines to all in need, and hugs to all their beans. :YMHUG: Prayers are still going out for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF, and Elise's DM. Cheers for Cairo on Day 10! :RAHCAT

Re: 9/4 Cinco AMPS 223 +4 192 +6.5 188

Oh wow Tricia! I've heard horror stories about kitties that have just munched a little on lilies of various types and had really disastrous consequences! I absolutely love lilies but am scared to death of what might happen if one of my cats decided to make a snack out of one. (and all my kitties love to destroy plants of any kind..I've tried and tried to have houseplants but they seem to find a way to kill every last one of them)

I know it seems like a lot of peroxide, but when I've had to use it in a drooler in the past, I was shocked at how much it took to get a "reaction" out of him...and once it did start to work, it kept working and working and working

Sure glad it seems that Harvey's OK! I've heard of Buns of Steel, Balls of Steel....good thing he seems to have a Stomach of Steel!

Now for Cinco....I guess after all the theatrics last night, the bounce isn't too bad, and he seems to be coming down nicely! Sure hope he continues the nice gentle slide and gives you a pretty blue PMPS.

What are we going to do with these kitties of ours? You know those chains they use to tie up elephants? As much as I disagree with the way they're used, maybe we could use the same theory....somehow tie ours up to a very large tree so they can only swim out so far into the lagoon? Or how about trying a shark net? Like the ones that protect the swimmers from the sharks by making it so they can't come into shore (only in reverse so our cats can't get out in the deep water?)....We'll have to do some more thinking on this

OK now Cinco...and Max too (because I know you read Cinco's condo)...No more of this nonsense you hear me? Your mamabeans need some sleep once in awhile!!

Re: 9/4 Cinco AMPS 223 +4 192 +6.5 188

Yikes!! I think it's time to throw out that plant. Tiffany used to eat plants so all of my to this day are in the living room and off limits to cats. When she was hospitalized and I would go to visit her I would have to have them move the plant out of the room each time. Max didn't eat them but would dig in the dirt and make a mess.

Chris I sure hope Max read this condo. I'd love for him to have a night similar to what I've seen so far today. If he wants to spend a bit more time in high green that would be fine as well. I think cinco and China need to do the same.

Re: 9/4 Cinco AMPS 223 +4 192 +6.5 188

Waaaaay too much excitement at your house, Tricia.  How about a nice boring condo sometime? I hope Harvey is ok tonight, along with everyone else. Nice slide, Cinco, but no deep diving tonight.
Liz

Re: 9/4 Cinco AMPS 223 +4 192 +6.5 188

Oh wow. I hope Harvey doesn't have any bad effects from the plant tonight. That is scary.

Nice slide for Cinco today. I hope he doesn't keep you up all night again.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218

Thanks for commiserating, Chris, Elise, Liz and Carla. Harvey appears to have suffered no lasting ill effects. He ate his dinner with enthusiasm and asked for second. Funny, he's the king of scarf and barf, but when I WANT him to throw up, I can't get him to do it!

The plant is up in an inaccessible spot, and if DH says the wall unit will handle the weight of it, it will be moved to an even safer spot this weekend. Harvey has always been my only plant chewer. I have to keep spider plants up at the highest location in the house, as he chews on the leaves and eats the babies. He's never bothered the pothos or my African Violets. I did have to tell DH that when he sends me roses he needs to tell them no baby's breath, as Harvey goes for that, too. I guess I should consider getting him some cat grass and/or a catnip plant of his own. Then maybe he'd leave my other plants alone.

Chris, I don't know what to think. Looks like China's doing a nice, slow slide -where did she get that? She's really trying to confuse you, isn't she?!

Cinco was very flat today, which was nice for my errand-running. Looks like he stayed flat through PMPS. Now, will he continue this way or will we see some action tonight? I've given up predicting, but I picked up some more Cowboy Cookout today, just in case....

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218

Cinco! How about you stay a little closer to shore! I like Chris' idea of coming up with some sort of fence or net to keep our kitties from swimming out into the deep end of the lagoon.

Ugh. What an "exciting" morning for you. We gave up on having houseplants several years ago, back when we only had two cats. With 5, I can't even imagine. I never had toxic ones, but I had a planter with Hen & Chicks that I took from my grandmother's house years after she passed away, and after my grandfather passed and the house was being sold. The plant had been there for probably 50 years or more. Reekoe, our oldest civilian thought it was way better to use the planter as a litter box than his box. He uprooted all of the plants in the process of digging. I managed to replant them a few times, but eventually, being constantly dug up by the cat, and then replanted by the bean, the plants gave up the ghost.

I sincerely hope your night is a little calmer than your day was today, and sending vines for Harvey just to be on the safe side.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218

Wow Tricia, Cinco kept you very very busy last night!!  Guess he wanted a reduction! How scary that Harvey ate the lilly, they are my favorite flowers too, but they are super poisonious. I still have some outside, I can't bear to get rid of them...Glad to hear that Harvey is okay, never a dull moment at your place, huh!

When Tiger was taking the full dose of bupe, she not only peed over the side of her litter box, she also for the first time ever, left a bit of poop over the side as well! Couldn't it be possible that cone somehow disorients poor Cinco and disrupts his balance? I can't wait until he can get rid of it- poor guy!

Sending vines to all your kitties, btw, how is Sasha? Has she started chemo yet? If so, I hope she is doing okay, she is such a brave little girl!

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122

Thanks for visiting, Jen and Ruth.

Cinco might want a reduction, but he's not getting one. As a long term diabetic, he has to go under 40 or under 50 three times.

That Peace Lily is a beautiful plant, but it hasn't bloomed since we've had it (it was in bloom when it arrived). I guess it's not quite happy enough here. Maybe it's new location will inspire it. I've suspected Harvey of nibbling on it before, but this is the first time I've actually caught him eating it. He is one tough cat.

Ruth, Cinco has had issues getting all the way into the box since he went blind. I think he figures if all four feet are in, he's good. Problem is, he's a big cat, and his butt can hang over the edge. We got the biggest box available, with high sides, for that reason. Today, I think the problem was that he went the first time and thought he was done, so he made his way out - a challenge for him with that cone and the narrow walkway from the box to his favorite spot. Then he realized he still needed to go, and headed back, but didn't make it all the way. :o

Sasha is doing amazingly well. She finally stopped losing hair. She hates the aloe rub down, but her skin isn't dry any more. She starts chemo on Monday.

Jen, I've never had this particular herd of cats use a plant as a litter box - maybe because I keep most of them too high for that. One of my GAs, Max, used a large plant at my DMIL's house when we visited there years ago. She took it in stride. I was mortified.

Well, Cinco is coming down. It just remains to be seen how much farther he'll come tonight. Stay tuned.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122 +5 68

I thought about waiting till +6 to check him. Glad I didn't . Here's hoping this is the nadir and we're not looking at another long night.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122 +5 68

Hey, Cinco. Stay right where you are and bring Max up with you. Your mama and I need our beauty sleep. We are glad you are in the green but no need to show off your diving skills. You know that 75 is just as good as any number in the 60's or 50's right now.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122 +5 68

Hee hee. We were posting on each other's condo at the same time. Great minds? I told Max to bring Cinco, and you told Cinco to bring Max. Think they'll listen?

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122 +5 68 +6.5 93 +7 81

Tricia sent me a note asking if I thought it was OK for her to get some sleep.

I think it's fine. If you're nervous, give Cinco some higher carb food to bump him up a little. He's been surfing so I doubt there will be any abrupt drop this late in the cycle.

Re: 9/4 Cinco PMPS 218 +3 122 +5 68 +6.5 93 +7 81

Thanks, Sienne. That's what I thought. I just wasn't sure when he went down again, but he never did get below 60, so maybe I was over-cautious to keep testing so long. I'm outta here! I-) I-) I-)

BTW, I know you shouldn't ask for advice in a PM, but I wanted to be sure to get your attention. Thanks for responding.
