I cant shoot...he wont eat......gave 1/4 Pepcid AC.....threw up a little food in bathtub, must have been trying to drink

What do I do? his number is 549

I think he needs insulin, but can you stall and see if his tummy feels better in an hour or so? Will you be home today?

Sending super strong feel better vines and eating vines to Checkers.

Please try to get a ketone test. If you can't and go to the vet ask them to get one. Also, get a prescription for anti-nausea meds like Ondansetron. The best price for them I've found is at Costco.

I gave him one teas of FF slurry. If he holds that down for 15 minutes, I will shoot, and continue to syringe feed.
That brings him to just 15 minutes over shot time.
Okay?

I have to go, but will be keeping Checkers and you in my thoughts and well wishes today.

If you are going to be home, and can syringe him food and he keeps it down, then I think giving him his shot will be okay.
I might wait a half hour to make sure he keeps the food down.

Barb -

After the issue with the urine odor this weekend, he needs to be seen by Dr. Dave. Checkers may need fluids on a regular basis. Kidney issues can effect appetite. In addition, is Checkers getting his pain meds?

I agree with Dyana, Checks needs insulin. You may need to syringe feed but I would try to syringe feed first so you know he can keep food down.

I am sorry I have missed all that has gone on with Checkers these past few days. Sorry for the appy issue too, and the high numbers. This is all so reminiscent of what I went through with Mannie. He wouldn't take food with the syringe, but I did get food in him, gravy foods, as that was all he would eat, by letting/strongly encouraging him to slurp it off the sponsor, throughout the day. I was able then to give him some insulin. It's good that Checks will take the syringe.

I ill be keeping you in my thoughts today. Major hugs to you!

Sienne, I agree with everything you said. Learned yesterdy to give fliuds....he get pain med 3 tmes a day

he had insulin, and syringe feedings.......

Barb - I'm so sorry Checkers isn't feeling well and not eating. That is soooo freakin' stressful. I will be praying for you guys and I hope the vet can get him feeling better for you. Please take care!

(((Barb))) one of my Bean friends mentioned Checkers hasn't been feeling good, so I am just getting caught up on him and you. I have missed getting my Checkers fix, but so sorry to hear he's been so sick. It sounds like he did perk up yesterday with the fluids.

This is the news I've been dreading. I need to make a decision. :cry:

Because his bloodwork didn't sound so terrible last time, I talked myself into thinking he could be comfortable for a long time.
I knew better! Dave said the words today, "end stage kidney failure".

I can maybe, give fluids daily, and prolong his life, but he is not a cat that will lay still for that, for long.

Then, he is still in what Dave has said is "significant" pain in his spine. Bupe helps for short periods of time.
Do I want to keep my best friend, drugged constantly?

The worsening kidney issue is making him nauseated. He got a shot of Cerenia.
He is skin and bones. He is down from 16lbs to 6! He is weak. He's starting to wobble when he walks, and doesn't straighten his legs totally.
He squats in the LB, when he pees...he used to do it straight out behind him. I can't even get the Keto-stick under him any more.
He is never happy...just stays in his cube, except to come out to drink or barely eat.

I am trying to wrap my head around this, as I know I only have a very short time with him. Probably days. He is miserable.
Dr Dave will come to the house. He'll give him something to sleep first, as Checkers veins are collapsed, and he doesn't want to hurt him further.
I've forgotten half of what Dave said. I'm fighting back hysteria as I write this.

Oh Barb, I am so sorry. Having been through this recently, I understand fighting thru the hysteria. I had to decide in a matter of minutes with Mullet.

I'm SO SO SO sorry about this news...this stinks. I'm sharing your tears today...sweet baby has had such a WONDERFUL life SO full of love. So many never know this. THANK YOU for sharing him with us...he's a special boy.

Oh Barb, this does indeed suck! Sit with him and try to create some last memories that will not be so painful. When Cleo was at end stage we took her outside to sit with her in the grass. She hadn't been out there for a very long tim and stretched out between us. Right now all you can do is be with him and continue showing him the love that has surrounded him your whole life together.

Sending soothing, calming vines for you and pain free vines for Checkers. Letting go is the hardest gift a bean can give a fur friend.

He's had a couple or a few good days in a row and then a bad day. I hope he has many good days to come.
I wish I could hug you in person. I can feel for you. Shedding tears for you, here at my desk at work.

I can't stand this! I don't believe it. I'm reading my own condo, and it feels wrong, somehow.
How can he be this bad, when he is sitting erect and stately, looking at me with all his innocence, wondering why I'm upset.
How can he sit here purring, without a care in the world, when I am in despair?
It's not true!!!

How can he be running up the steps in the bathroom, to get to the sink, one day, and be hardly able to stand to eat, the next?
The next minute, for crying out loud! He changes so quickly!

His numbers are dropping, and he ate some zero carb kibble. He's been drinking a lot.
I gave some fancy feast slurry in a syringe, and he eagerly sucked it up, like a baby. He can't be so sick. I don't believe it.

But Barbara, you live with it....you know he's been declining. Denying it, doesn't make it so.

Awe Barb,
He doesn't know he's as sick as you know he is. Heck, he doesn't even know he's been a diabetic. He just knows you love him and returns that love tenfold.

Just love on him, sweety. He understands that so much.

Hi Barb - I am so very sorry to read this. It is so fresh and poignant for me, having been through it such a short time ago, when I had to say goodbye to my boy.. You are right: denying what is will doesn't change it, sadly so, Your last post was so vivid, as it encompasses all those emotions I went through with Mannie. One minute he is running the house, the next he can barely move. None of it is ever fair. I worried so that I would not see the signs from him. I can remember one particularly bad morning, and I looked at Mannie, talked to him, asked him to tell me when. I can still see it: he relaxed, clsoed his eyes and purred. I knew then that it was his wish. I let him go that night. I know you will know in your heart when it is time for Checkers. He will tell you, and I know you will see it. Until then, love him to pieces, spend what time you can with him, cherish every moment. I know Checkers could not have a more caring compassionate bean. He is honored to have you. My heart goes out to you. Hugs abound, we are all here for you.

((((Barb)))) My heart is breaking for you. I know your amazing love for and unending devotion to Checkers.

I have seen some good responses from hospitalization and IV fluids for a few days. However, Checks is a little different as is Gus. When they have so much else going on, it does require you to think about their QOL. Yes, the IV fluids might help but he will still have spinal pain, diabetes, etc etc. and he will still be in CKD and without continued aggressive home treatment, he could backslide. If he is wobbly, I wonder if his potassium is too low....so lots of things going on.

I will hold you close in prayer and send Checks many healing vines.

This is one of those things that is just so hard about being the bean…you know more “technical info” than he does. It puts us in an incredible state of grief…I think most, if not all of us, know it all too well. He knows he’s happy and loved, and in all of this, that is the most important thing of all.

And, one thing to remember…there is “data”, and there is “real life”. The two don’t always coincide. Yes, you know he is not well and there is no way around the reality of that. But that doesn’t mean that he’s not going to surprise with quite a few feisty Checkers moments – especially because he knows he is so very loved. Take it all one minute at a time…savor and enjoy those tub drinks. Give him what he enjoys eating. Have fun, Checkers style. And comfort him when he’s feeling yucky…but don’t be surprised if he’s squawking at the bathroom door a little while later!

Thank you all, so very much. I wish I could answer every single one of you, but right now, I can barely breathe.
Thing is, I knew this was coming. Susan and I have talked quite a bit about it lately. She sees things I don't want to see, and she is so afraid of upsetting me by saying it, but otherwise I am in denial.
Sienne posted a link to assessing QOL, and God help me, Checkers was experiencing just about every thing on the checklist.
I thought if I didn't post these things on here, then they weren't true.

Checkers has been following me around the last week or so. He wants to be always near me. He's letting me love on him today, which is unusual for him.
I'd love to take him outside, as he loves that, but it's cold and wet. Phooey.

Shut me up please. I either clam up, or ramble non-stop, when worried.

He is so cute, sucking on the syringe, like a kitten.
He ate some Gravy Lovers....yes, I let him have what he will eat. I'll be sorry tonite when his bg is 500. :o nailbite_smile :oops:

ETA: he has many many good days..
