Good afternoon LL,

Yesterday's condo is here.

Angie and I had a big sleep this morning and once again I missed her nardir. It might have been a strategy on her part but she slept right through third breffies (normally at +3) and didn't wake me up till +6!

Angie has been going deaf and we noticed that she had some anxiety about different things. She would howl if she didn't know where we were. We learnt to stomp in response and she walks to the vibrations and announces mi-ih ("I'm here"). We also realised that she couldn't hear us calling her for food. We read an article about animals going deaf that suggested we teach them sign language while they can still hear a bit and therefore never feel like they don't understand what's going on. We started two gentle touches on her chin with a finger while asking if she want's dinner or breakfast (she knows both those words). The down side of teaching her sign language is now she comes and gives me two gentle taps on the chin when she wants me to wake up and feed her. She used to wake me by talking but the chin touches is new and I wake with a start.

Julie - thanks for your visit yesterday and for what you said about my Jetzin.

Does anyone know what number counts as ketones when you're testing by blood?

Angie got a reading of 1.2 mmol/L for ketones today using the Freestyle Optium Neo. Do I multiply that by 18 as well to get a US value? Her previous readings were all about 0.7 if I remember right.

Thanks,
Grace

Sorry, I don't know bout the ketones. I just wanted to stop by and check on Angie. That's interesting about the sign language. She's a smart kitty.

Sorry about your sweet Jetzin. I'm glad he was able to be with you as he passed. He was lucky to have you. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Hi Grace ~O) ~O) ~O)

No clue on the blood ketones either.... I used the urine trips.

LOVE that photo, way to cute.

Bummer on Angie going deaf. I sometimes wonder too if that was what was up with my BJ, as she would holler and bellow too until she found us. it is way cool if you can teach Angie sign language. I see she is learning how to put it too use.

Have a great day. I hope all goes well.

Re: 9/29 Angie pmps=247 - testin blood ketones, what is high

I''ll call my vet tomorrow about the ketones. I can't find the blood ketones test levels searching this site or the wider web.

I stayed up till 1 am to get a +5 test but once again failed. I got her four times but she managed to wipe away the drop each time before it got big enough. She's switched from gentle ouches to gentle growls and some very articulate glares once I let her go. She is refusing all treats on principle after testing now.

Angie has an impressive vocabulary of swear words, holds grudges and isn't above emotional punishment so I'm trying to keep testing as un-traumatic as possible. She's more sensitive about her ears this time around. I think it's because she reacted to a recent ear medication - her ears scabbed up and scarred and she has lost a lot of fur, inside and out. The scabs healed a while ago but it's not surprising that she's less trusting about painful things I inflict apron her.

Tomorrow is a new day!

Michelle - I couldn't tell from your tenses if BJ is a cat you used to have or one you have now. I found that Angie responded to stomping with relief from the first time I tried it. Sign language seems to be quite easy to teach too. We just add the sign to what ever the verbal queue she is used to. She was a bit confused at first - "Why are you touching my chin?" - but very quickly associated that with the "would you like some breakfast, Angie?" question that she knows so well.

Good night all.

Here's a link on how to interpret blood ketone tests: http://type1diabetes.about.com/od/technologyandequipment/p/How-To-Read-Blood-Ketone-Test-Results.htm

Below 0.6 mmol/L
If your reading is below 0.6 you are in the normal range.

0.6 to 1.5 mmol/L
If your number is in this range you have the presence of ketones in your blood, which may develop into a problem if not treated. You should be in touch with your healthcare provider and follow his or her instructions.

Above 1.5 mmol/L
Readings above 1.5 indicate a greater risk for developing ketoacidosis (DKA). You should immediately contact your healthcare provider for advice. Readings above 3.0 mmd/L may warrant a trip to the nearest emergency room for immediate treatment.

A 1.2 sounds like you should probably do some of the things that take care of ketones - lots of fluids and plenty of food.

She sounds adorable. What a good idea to teach her some sign language.

You're welcome. We never stop loving these little ones, even when they are gone.

BJ passed away a while ago - she was Michelle's kitty that was a singer. I loved stories about BJ leading the choir.

Re: 9/29 Angie pmps=247 - testin blood ketones, what is high

Sharyn (an old time member) did some comparisons with her kitty's (Fiona's) numbers on a Precision Xtra meter. This is a ketone meter also made by Abbott:

Precision Xtra Readings for Cats

**'Normal' for cats is 0.0-0.3 (Fiona's normal is 0.1, D & Shadow's normal is 0.3)

**3.0 is aproximately when ketones start showing on urine ketodiastix strips at a trace - at least that is the case for Fiona.

Hi GraceandAngie,

I am sorry to hear of Angie's going deaf but think it is great if you can teach her some sign language. I have had 2 kitties (both GA now) in the past few years that went deaf also. We also did the stomping thing so they would get the vibrations and know where we were. The deafness seemed to make them anxious at first but they responded to the heavy footsteps. They also learned to come for either feeding, visiting, or going out on the deck when I would just gently wave my hand in a "come here" gesture, over and over at first. It didn't take them long to make the connection and they would come for anything and everything with that simple hand motion. Good luck with teaching your little girl--it sounds like she has already caught on to the signal to get breakfast ;-)

I'm sorry to hear that Angie is going deaf, but that is beyond cool that she knows sign language! Wow! What a sweet and smart girl.

Re: 9/29 Angie pmps=247 - testin blood ketones, what is high

to my knowledge, this is the most current info we have about blood ketone readings: http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=99426&p=1062829&hilit=+kirsten#p1062829.

copied and pasted here:

not too long ago, kirsten of tillydiabetes.com was kind enough to email two of the latest scientific studies concerning measurement of ketones when using a blood ketone meter. these studies provide an up-to-date interpretation of when a blood ketone concentration of DKA is more likely to be present: 2.4 and 2.55.

Measurement of β-hydroxybutyrate in cats with nonketotic diabetes mellitus, diabetic ketosis, and diabetic ketoacidosis. - published March 2012

Re: 9/29 Angie pmps=247 - testin blood ketones, what is high

Hi Grace and extra sweet Angie!

Cats do pick up sign language quickly and can learn as many signs as words, likely even more. I had a deaf cat for 20 years, we used lots of different signs with him. One of the biggest things is not to just reach down and touch her when she doesn't realize you're there - do something like tap lightly beside her, touch her front paw but be sure you're in front of her so it won't startle her. DC learned to tell who was coming by their footsteps - if it was one of the young kids (he grew up with 4 boys), he'd move to a safe place, if it was one of the older ones or me - he'd flip on his back for belly rubs or raise his front left paw which meant 'I want food' for us....HE taught us that one. :-D Sounds like you're already on the way to her understanding your hands. I still use signs with all my dogs, convenient to give commands from across the yard. Even the newest rescue 5 month old dog already knows about 6 signs.

HUGS and prayers for no ketone problems!
