Good Morning LL! Tess is sliding nicely , so hopefully back to the Lagoon soon. I started adding supplements back into her first breffis and it went pretty well. I really think it's the psyllium and maybe just the latest jar. This brand was much finer and I think it made the food too sticky almost jelled.

WCR All 5 Ps, just about Clean Plate Club, and an easy slow morning today.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157

Nice start today! We love blue but green is even better! I bet it is the psyllium. It does like to jell up. Have a great day Ann!

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 how much pumpkin?

   And we just tried some pumpkin, SHE LIKES IT! HEY, TESSIE!!!!! At least for now. :?

I gave her about a tsp. of pumpkin. How much do those of you who feed it normally give? I have some mini ice cube trays and the can just filled 3 of them, it looks like about a tsp. per cup cube.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 how much pumpkin?

I put it down and she sniffed it, interested. A few fd duck sprinkles and she tried it. Thought about it for a second and ate the rest! Of course she is dropping so that might have something to do w/ it too.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 +4.5~66 how much pumpkin?

Yay for Tessie liking her new 'treats'!! :-D :-D :-D
I think 1t. pumpkin is the usual amount ~ I give Ripley about 1 T. each evening (mixed in w/her dinner), but she's constipation-proned and taking phosphorous binders (which can cause constipation), so that's why she gets a tablespoon.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 +4.5~66 how much pumpkin?

I would see how the teaspoon of pumpkin works for a few days and go from there.

sorry to butt in but Im kind of newish here and I have a question about the pumpkin.

Is it for constipation? I added butternut squash (which is about the same carb wise as pumpkin) to my cats raw food mix for years for constipation and it worked great. But I just recently learned (at least I think) that it may have been way too high a carb % for them (I was adding 7% squash by *weight* not % of calories.) I kind of think this may be why my kitty Crusher ended up diabetic after being on a raw diet for 10 years.

7% of 2 lbs of chicken by weight would be roughly 3 or 4 tbs of squash and I figured that to be around 20% of calories as carbohydrate

Pumpkin and squash are very carby. How does that work with already diabetic cats?

Are you saying you found a can of pumpkin that is only 4 tsp.? or you filled up 3 whole trays full?

When I give J.D. the baby food squash, I give him about a tablespoon. I think starting with a teaspoon is fine.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 +4.5~66 +6~50 +7~48 much pumpki

Michele M...the pumpkin is useful for both constipation and diarrhea. The fiber in it works for both

Pumpkin/squash is mostly fiber and a lot of us use it for both situations, so the carb% isn't really a factor. It's low enough that it shouldn't effect BG levels. That being said, No, feeding squash to your cat for years shouldn't have caused diabetes.

Much more likely is dry food, and high carb wet food and treats. There's also a genetic component to diabetes and even if you do everything right, a cat (or human) can still develop it...although it's less likely if they're kept on a low carb diet their entire life

Yay on Tess liking the pumpkin! I was pleasantly surprised when Chyna liked both pumpkin and squash :o :-D I give maybe a tsp a day, using squash for now:) Slow down and surf now, Tess

Thanks for the suggestions, I thought 1 tsp was what I remembered.

   Sorry, 3 ice cube trays full. They're mini cube so each one holds about a tsp, 21 little cubes per tray! Perfect!! :-D :-D :-D I'll see if Emma likes it too, she has the opposite problem from Tess. Tess eats raw about half the time and that can constipate. Emma on the other hand is verging on the pudding side! both had been getting psyllium, but I'd rather give them pumpkin. Lately Tess was snubbing her fuds in the morning, and I think it's just been after i got a different brand of psyllium, much finer powder. So I thought I would try pumpkin, especially since it is available now.

Re: 9/28 Tess AMPS~157 +3~86 +4.5~66 +6~50 +7~48 +8~53 pump

Michell, I wouldn't worry about it either. I have a raw recipe that has an option to add 1.5 cups of sweet potato to 2 pounds of chicken and it only raises the carbs to 14% from 1%. AND Sweet potato is twice the carbs of squash so your food would probably have been LC.

Re: 9/28TessAMPS~157+3~86+4.5~66+6~50+7~48+8~53+9.5~56pumpki

thanks Chris and Ann! Really good to know I didnt cause his diabetes.

I just crunched the numbers again on my old raw recipe and it looks like it was more like 1% carb and not 20% like I thought (I am so NOT a math genius!!! ohmygod_smile ) squash really is very low carb

good!!!

Im a lot less worried about my other cats now too

Woohoo, KK!   We started Zener on 1/2 teaspoon squash, BID, went to 1 t BID, tried 1.5t and that was too much, he wouldn't eat it, so we are back to 1 t BID. It does seem to help his digestion and make his poos a good size. Chief Inspector Crapdash keeps a close eye on that.
