Ozy has had a pretty good 24 hours though his numbers are a little high. I tried to do a ketone test yesterday and failed to capture any precious liquid to test. The usual scenario is I hear him digging and rush to catch some urine and I am too late cuz the digging happens AFTER. If he is going to be hot pink, I am going to have to put the litter box in the room with me.

Ozy is still getting around better. He no longer seems like a really old out of it cat. He still can't jump up very far. But he hangs out with us more and yesterday he kicked Harpo out of a box he likes to lie in.

We have another chiropractor appointment today. We got him a new cat carrier with a top that opens. Our old one was so difficult to get him out of and I think we hurt him last week trying.

We are on a later schedule because of stalling two hours night before last. We moved it up half an hour last night. We might try this 9:30 schedule for a while. The 8:00 schedule seems to get in the way of dinner. DH has a hard time with needles and he doesn't like dealing with them so close to dinner time. All he has to do is scratch Ozy while I shoot but I guess if needles really bother you, that is too close for comfort.

I don't understand WHY he is higher. Sometimes he bounces after he goes low and other times he doesn't. And then I have been reading about sputtering pancreas, where it works sometimes. I wonder if THAT is what is making his numbers go up and down.

If you haven't seen Sienne's video of Gizmo catching treats, I recommend it. He's quite amazing.

And, please, go visit Picknickchick. She is like a cat and hides her pain but she is VERY worried about River. She needs us.

I don't know why some bounces are higher than others, but that happens with Furball too. It is just how bouncing is. Good luck with the new shot schedule if you decide to keep it. That is nice of your DH to help even when he doesn't like needles. I hope all goes well at the chiropractor today. Hopefully it will make Ozy feel even better.

I know how you feel Donaleen...those bounces can drive you mad, as well as making you bald from tearing your hair out trying to figure out WHY

I think the best answer to that "why" is...because they're cats....they like to be "mysterious" :-D :-D

Hang in there and hopefully Ozy will get with the program soon!

Come on Ozy!! Work that juice so you don't end up with a bald mommabean!

Yes, bald would not be good on me. I think I have a knobby head with many flat spots. Ewwwwhhhh!

He is so hungry today, like he is starving. No amount of food can meet that hunger. His BG is high. That doesn't make sense. Hunger is supposed to be triggered by low BG. He was also starving all the time before he was diagnosed. I assumed it was because his cells were starving due to no insulin to use the glucose. So are his cells starving now? Why?

I need to know these things in order to be a better pancreas surrogate.

Oh jeeps, you are so kind, Donaleen. Anyway, I'm sorry to see that Ozy is following River. Certainly hope it's not for too long. Ozy's pretty good at clearing his bounces, so I hope this will be history soon!

He may need a bit more time to get used to the new dose amount. Some cats bounce more than others, too. Hoping that he'll clear this bounce quickly, and give you nice #s very soon. Hang in there. You're both doing a wonderful job. :-D

Thanks, Angela. We just successfully gave him 100ml of subQ fluids. So pleased about that. He also saw the chiro again today. Hopefully all that will bring him down. Now if I could just catch him peeing and get a ketone test, life would be good.

most cats want to eat everything in sight when their numbers are high. here's an interesting discussion about the appetites of kitties during this sugar dance: DISCUSSION: "FEED KITTY AS MUCH AS THEY WANT?". perhaps the thread will help give you a better understanding of sugar kitties' ravenous appetites.

hunger isn't necessarily triggered by a low BG number. it's the drop from higher numbers that triggers the hunger. kitty feels the drop and naturally wants to eat to level himself out.

Thanks, Jill. I will take a look. I like to understand what is going on. Well, I did read it. Can't say I understand why they are so hungry when they are high.

Ozy tested positive (for the first time) to a trace of ketones. Does that mean I am feeding him too little? I am following the Dr. Lisa weight guidelines. I am trying for 8 oz in 24 hours, which is a weight maintenance for his size, not a weight loss. He hasn't lost any weight. Even a trace of ketones scares me pretty bad.

I am reading everything I can find on ketosis. Any help is appreciated.

donaleen, retest ozy's urine this morning or as soon as possible. make sure you're following instructions to the letter because the strips will appear darker when read past 15 seconds. also make sure you have good light when comparing the strip to the colors on the outside of the cannister.

imho, there's no mistaking a positive test for ketones. when positive (even a trace) the color on the strip will pop out at you. whenever anyone tells me kitty has "trace" ketones i'll suggest the caregiver test themselves to get an idea of what "negative" ketones looks like on a dipstick for comparison.

if ozy IS throwing ketones you'll definitely want to increase the amount of food and water you're giving him as well as give him subq fluids if your vet has ok'd the use of fluids with ozy. he may also require a dose increase, but let's hold off on that discussion until you can get a second ketone test today to confirm.

the recipe for ketoacidosis is an inadequate supply of insulin + not enough food + infection OR certain other systemic stresses. if he is throwing ketones you'll want to let your vet know so he can examine ozy for infection and/or treatment. anything above trace ketones should not be treated at home.

when you start a thread today, please add something like "possible ketones" to the subject line and the link to this thread in the body of the post. i'll be out more than i'm in today, but i'll check back to see how things are going when i can. mentioning the possibility of ketones in the subject line of your new thread will alert others who will be online today.

The easiest explanation for why kitties are hungry when numbers are high is that food isn't getting where it's supposed to go. Food breaks down into it's simplest form (glucose) by the process of digestion. Glucose is the basic molecule that gets into all cells and provides nourishment and energy. Insulin is what helps to transport glucose into cells. If there's not enough insulin (either based on what the pancreas can manufacture or what we can provide via injection) the glucose doesn't get into the cells and instead, floats around in the blood. As a result of the glucose not providing nourishment to the cells, your kitty is still hungry.
