Mornin' :coffee:

Civvie's dental went well yesterday. Vet gave me another round of AB for Beenie. She coughed yesterday and it sounded awful. I told him about that plus my 50% success rate with the eye drops and he said just give her the Orbax again and it will knock out whatever is still hanging around.

Other than that status quo here. Increased this morning. Started the day barely in the blues but I'll take it as it is Beenies favorite color:cool:

So glad the dental went well! Poor Beenie, and poor you having to do another round of antibiotics. But hopefully it will knock out that cough quickly and also clear up her beautiful eyes. Vines for quick healing!

I so thought of Sam and the fact he wouldn't sleep at first when he came home. Ming just sat around most of the night starring...he looked like he partied in 1980 but his eyes look much better today. Now he's laying in the LB :banghead:. He'll do this when he's constipated. So hopefully he passes it soon:(

@Wendy&Neko I just read a tid bit on line and was wondering if it were true. Its on MSN and titled 50 fascinating facts about cats. Here's the one "fact"
"One of the reasons a kitten sleeps so much is because it releases a growth hormone during sleep."
Is there more than one growth hormone or is it the same IGH-1? If so, I notice Beenie sleeping/resting waaaay more than the civvies. Does the excess IGH-1 make them more inclined to sleep?

This is only 7 of 50 fascinating facts...I'll probably tag you again depending on what I read next :p

Could be the Cabergoline too, Bronx seemed more tired when I started it. But also started Gaba around the same time, so I guess it could've been that as well.
Oh this has been the case well before cabergoline was added to the mix. I just chalked it up to her not feeling well because of the FD. Or maybe because she's 12...I don't know. Maybe I should just put the detective hat away:rolleyes:

Humans also excrete growth hormone and IGF-1 while sleeping. It is used in muscle building and is why some athletes will do 90 minute power naps during the day. Letheragy is a common symptom of acromegaly. Neko got a little more active after we addressed her arthritis pain with bupe. Acros, human at least, say it's a painful condition. Same thing teenagers experience during growth spurts.

Before the FD dx I thought Beenie was suffering from Arthritis. Had her on Dasuquin. Stopped that once we started insulin and then thought it was neuropathy. She is currently still taking Zobaline. Her paws don't slide out from underneath her but she still walks very gingerly. So she could very well be uncomfortable. Is the only way to know if she's in pain or discomfort is to give a pain med and see if it changes things? If so would you recommend bupe?

Bronx also walks very gingerly with his front legs, been doing it a long time. I thought it was just arthritis at first & had no idea he probably had acro for a while before I brought him in for FD after he was drinking a ton. X-rays showed much bony growth in the front shoulder area from acro. Acro also affects bony growth in the spine area too and I see Bronx walks with a slight hunchback. I am trying fish oil, CBD oil & turmeric golden paste. Gaba just made him sleepy and I heard bupe is not good long term for constipation issues. My holistic method seems to have helped him but he is definitely not 100% fine, still has trouble going down stairs with the front legs and still has that hunchback. Bupe is supposed to be for sharp pain and Gaba more for the arthritic pain.

Girlie isn't an acro cat, so I don't know what that can do, but Bronx's dad and Wendy have got you covered there. Early on an x-ray showed the arthritic deterioration, so that was that. I will say re: Girlie's arthritis: I can always tell from the expression on her face and how she moves and what she can and can't do easily whether she's in pain. Example: won't want down stairs to garden? Rear legs not flexing properly when walking (very stiff)? Hesitates or works up the courage to jump up on things (even with all of the risers I have around to make it easier for her to get up on things)? Lying down on my lap: easy to fold her front legs, or a slow, delicate process?

Then there's my wonderful acupuncture vet who can tell by touching and moving the limbs in a certain way where the pain is and how pronounced. I really recommend acupuncture: it's helping Girlie a lot right now.

The whole question of how to ID pain in cats is a tricky one that I wish I had more info on. Even though I can identify the movement issues, at this point, after her having had arthritis for so long now, it's hard for me to ID subtle changes and how bad the pain actually is. I would be very interested to know if anyone had more tips on that, though!

Would do it in a heart beat but Beenie doesn't travel well. My vet's office offers acupuncture and laser therapy. Too much of a stress to get her there and would defeat the purpose. What I may try is Reiki. I did it for my civvie years ago and I think it helped him. Very holistic approach but at least she can come to the house where the acupuncture would cost me a small fortune to do house calls. Eh maybe I'll ask the vet, its his wife who is also a vet and maybe we can work something out.

Good to know. I don't need another constipated kitty in the mix. I wonder if a round of x-rays soon would be in order. She had xrays done in May well before acro dx but it would be a baseline of sorts. I'll get through this AB round then may reach out to you on dosage of a supplement. Thanks!

Neko's vet didn't need x-rays to tell she had arthritis. She could tell by feel. And once I learned acupressure, so could I.:( She had it in elbow, shoulders and spine. Buprenorphine was a game changer in Neko's QOL. I added a bit of pumpkin to her diet, and no problem with constipation. Of course she was on a raw diet which means skinnier poops and easier to pass. Neko was on bupe for three years, no long term effects except her pain was much better controlled. She also got benefit from acupuncture and Duralactin and maybe the fish oil. Don't be afraid of bupe, it's helped a lot of acros have better QOL. I am all for natural if it works, and I did try that first, it at some point it wasn't enough.

Marvin was the same, slept alot, didn't move much from the moment he was dx with FD, especially when he had his UTI and his numbers were high. I would say he is normal now, but that is recent he started sleeping less just before he was OTJ and the last month he seems pretty much normal, like he was before he was sick.

Has his neuropathy improved, Nat?

Maybe just a little, he moves around more, he sits longer period of time while I am preparing his food. He used to have to lie down right away, but now can stay sitting a bit. So there is improvements, but still mostly walking on his hocks. I may try cartraphen or B12 injections when my old Vet opens her own clinic in November My feeling is that it probably will not resolve since it was so bad, and for so long. The nerve damage might be permanent.

As long as he feels good, eats well and can do his litter box business he'll be OK. :)
