Hi Folks,

Squeaky started licking his lips right after BG test and I had to let him off my lap to vomit. Two vomits, with some food, some white opaque thick foamy stuff.

Do you think I need to be giving him cerenia? Last time I gave him some, he didn't have a good day after that and I'm not sure it's so great.

ACTUALLY I THINK HE'S NOT SO NAUSEOUS as much as he's upset about all the needle pokes. But who knows. He just asked to go out, he's still nauseous and wants to eat plant matter so he can relieve his upset stomach. He just refused food. UPDATE, I got him to eat.

What time is best for the followup BG test? I'm home today and can do this. Trying to minimize BG tests and make them really count.

Thanks much to everyone.

Hi, poor Squeaky!

I find a +2 is helpful at night so I'll know if it's going to be an active cycle BEFORE bedtime. During the day I like a +6 when his BG is high enough not to worry but when he's going low I do a +2 or 3 to catch it early. So hard to say since ECID.

Hopefully he'll get used to it. Behaviorally speaking, any behavior that results in the removal of an unpleasant stimuli is reinforced! He could be puking on purpose (just without intent). In the beginning I had to put Catman on the floor and kneel over over him to trap him. I always envied those calm kitties on laps. Now he's used to it so I can get him when he's lying on the couch. We've also paired testing with a snack (variable intermittent reinforcement is the best) so he almost WANTS to be tested. Each day is a little different. Hope he stops and chills knowing you are only trying to help him.

You're the second person who told me a +2 at night, but I still don't understand what active cycle means?

We got a FANTASTIC animal communicator and I know that Squeaky knows it's helping him, but no doubt he still doesn't like it and it hurts. I would be upset, too. He does cooperate. I think it just upsets him.

Please let me know what an active cycle is. We're trying to readjust our schedule so we can get a +2 a night but I still don't understand the significance. Thank you so much.

When you're using Lantus, the shot you give "now" doesn't usually start to "kick in" for 2-3 hours.

If the +2 is about the same as the Pre-shot, it's usually a fairly normal cycle that gradually goes down to nadir and then gradually up to the next Pre-shot.

If the +2 is higher than the PS, that's usually a sign that there's a bounce starting and you may be OK to take a pokey break

But, if the +2 is lower than the PS, that's your "early warning system" that it's important that you plan on getting more tests later in the cycle. Since the last shot really shouldn't have really kicked in yet, getting a lower +2 just let's you know that it's important to keep a closer eye on him during that cycle until you know for sure he's safe

Thank you Chris, it sounds important. I will print this out and read and reread it until it sticks in my brain! Thank you.
