Charms does this diabetes thing way better than I do. Gave him two good shots in a row and he got some lovely greens. I blew it again tonight. Not sure what I am doing wrong anymore and why I cannot manage to get all of the insulin in him. I pull the hair back so I know I am getting the needle in, but after I press the insulin in , I hold the needle in, but I feel the fur getting wet on the side of the tent. It does not seem like the needle is going back out. Not sure what is going wrong. Losing all confidence when this happens. I really go in with confidence, and think I have succeeded until I feel the wet fur. Charms is not moving away. I would appreciate any and all advice anyone could give to me. Thank You - Sam
PS Charms seems unaffected by all of my drama over this. Has a great appetite as usual. Seems to be feeling good. Told the new kitten in no uncertain terms that his tail is not a cat toy!!!!

I used to do Marje's roll method as I have a long haired and I found I did better .

the "roll" method. In this method, you lift the fur and skin with your non-shooting hand, and then roll your hand back so the back of your hand faces the kitty's head. This opens up a nice bit of skin that you can clearly see. It's important that you lift and then roll so you are guaranteed of shooting into the subcutaneous layer. The photo below illustrates how well you can see the skin when you lift and roll so that you know you are not shooting into fur as you might with the tent method.

It's in the method of shooting ... first post on this condo....

You might want to consider getting longer needles too. They come in different lengths.

I was having a similar problem too especially when we were newer at this dance, and when I had China at the vet, I had them shave a little patch on her scruff that made it MUCH easier to see and know I was getting it all where I wanted it.

Good luck to you and Charms! All in all, those are pretty nice numbers, so you're doing something right! :-D

I'm glad Rhiannon gave you the link for the Shooting and Testing Tips post. I found the rolling method, as well as making sure you are angling down 45 degrees really helps. I use the shorter needles. Some prefer the long. I do have more furshots on the left side than the right side (I alternate) so I have to be a bit more careful shooting that side.

I think your shot on the evening of the 24th must have been good. Anytime you wake up to a 76, some insulin got in the night before. And as Charms proved today, he does recover really well.

Thank you Rhiannon, Chris and Wendy for all the helpful tips. The article really really helped! I know I have read some of these things before but I made a whole list of ways to improve both ear testing and insulin injection. Thank you, - Sam
