YESTERDAY'S CONDO:http://www.felinediabetes.com/FDMB/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=125731

I increased just back to 2.5 units which might not be enough. I think the bubble is bigger these days in the syringe and I am also worried as to whether the pen is good even though never used and it has an expiration of 8/15. I took him back to the last dose before the increase but I don't know if he needs more.

He might be starting to lose of little of the excess weight. Today he was 15 lb 11 oz. He was 14 lb 9 oz and a little overweight last November. His low is a little over 14 lb. The only good thing I can think of about his high numbers is that he isn't demanding food so much. He did want food last night at +5 which prompted me to test and while down from the previous test of 299 was still at 205. Is the new pen I was given bad? Is something else causing these high numbers? As always it is so frustrating to me that none of this is logical or straight forward.

My mom went to her internist yesterday. He gave him some medication for around her eyes. The skin is quite red and he thinks it is from her low resistance. He took a sample to see if the infection is still there
as we have again seen signs of it. It think it is odd that my cats get worse every time she does. Tiffany was diagnosed with cancer while my mom was in the hospital with pleural effusion and Max seems to have issues every time she does as well. Since I don't live with her it sure is odd. Now I want them both to try feeling good at the same time.

Thanks for the hugs and stopping by last night Shelly and Mariko.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 DOSECREASE+2/330

Im looking at Maxs ss and Im thinking you may be right on the new pen. He has a lot of pinks since you started it. That , or he is dropping late at night and continues up to bounce in the am. Do you still have any of the "old " insulin you can give. He seemed to be doing better on that. Unless there is some underlying issues, Im not sure either..

Edit to add.. I have been trying a new thing for the bubble Elise that I dont know if you tried yet. I pull in a little more air to make the bubble bigger and flick the barrel to position the big bubble under the needle, then push the bubble out. Sometimes it works the first time, and sometimes I have to do it again. Hope this helps..I hate the bubbles

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 DOSECREASE+2/330+4/265

Hi Laura. The old insulin expired 9/14. I don't know if that means the beginning or end of the month. I do still have it. I also had 2 more pens sent to me at the same time as the one I am using that I could try. The expiration on the three pens is 8/15. The first day that I used the pen he went into green but not since. I'm going to try your bubble trick tonight. I have let extra air in before but will try it again. I might not have been compensating enough for the bubble. I don't know which insulin to use. confused_cat  Thanks.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

Laura, I looked at my ss again and I think you may be right. I also googled expiration dates and Mayo says it would expire the end of the month. I'm thinking of going back to the vial tonight. I don't know which to use though. I could also start another new pen.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

I think I would try the old one. Even though it expires at the end of the month, as I think that exp. date is put there for obvious reasons being they cant be responsible for it after the exp. date. But like alot of products, they are usually still good past that date. I would hope that you would know right away if it is bad, re the numbers, and basicly you are just testing to see if the new one is good or not..make sense? I mean, if you go back to the old one tonight and he drops, wouldnt that mean it is good still, or does it take at least 2 cycles to see effect. You just need to know for sanity sake. And if after a few cycles of the old, if he doesnt come down, then I would try another pen. Its crazy isnt :? it??

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

Thanks for looking at his ss, Laura. There are just too many variables for me. It could be a bounce from the one good day, bad pen, something else medical causing the wonkiness. If not enough insulin it seems he wouldn't go so high. All I knis is I think this is about to drive me crazy!

I did a google search and when a month and year is on a medication it means it expires the end of the month. I think I will use the vial tonight unless someone has a good reason not to use it.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

I hope using the vial will let you know if the pen is bad. Sending prayers for your mom. :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

It could also be NDW today, but I like Laura's idea of trying the old vial for a few cycles. Any bounce should be over by now. Max is working in the depot from the new pen now and I'm not impressed. I think either it's the pen, something medical, or he's being a cat. Try the old juice to eliminate that variable. Good luck.

Vines for your mom.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

Hi Elise! Sorry to hear that Max has some confusing numbers going around. I can imagine that is very frustrating. Do you have CVS pharmacies near you? They will sell a single pen for around $70. If you don't trust your pens or vial, maybe a brand new pen would be worth a try just to rule that out.

I would be lost without the bubble trick that Laura mentioned!

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

Thank you Deanna and Wendy. I will go back to the old vial tonight and tomorrow. I'm glad I now know how to interpret the date when given just a month and year.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 TINY DOSECREASE BAD PEN?+2/330+4/265+6

Following Marj's instructions, first I draw out more insulin than the dose. Then flick the bubbles up to the top and, if more than one, flick again to consolidate into one bubble, centered under the needle. Then, with a quick and deft pull and push, expel the bubble. Quick and deft is the key phrase here. Then you can proceed to fine tune the dose.

I would try a different pen, too!

Good luck.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 +2/330+6/201just being a cat PMPS 146

The darn bubbles. Why can't I get them away from the sides of the syringe? I can't get the bubble in the center no matter how many times I flick. Thanks Ella.

Max just threw up more fur. He is grooming a lot. Then I test and he's at 146, lowest of the last few days. I don't think it's the vial or the pen. I looked over his paws real well and don't see any problems. The other night when I was examining them and thinking of clippping he almost bit me. So I thought perhaps there might be a problem there but they look okay to me. I'm going to use the vial tonight since it's good until the end of the month. Maybe the tiny bit more juice is working and both the vial and pen are fine? The pens are from Costco and were sent to me by someone whose boyfriend lost his diabetic cat. They were in the fridge until she sent them to me overnight and with a cooling pack. I'm guessing they could not have been at room temp more than a dozen hours. Let's see what happens tonight.

Re: 9/23 MAX AMPS 265 +2/330+6/201just being a cat PMPS 146

I can never get the bubbles off the side either! I flick and flick..I can get it close to under the needle, and then, thats when I have to pull a little more air in, then flick lightly to center the bubble under the needle and push it out. It doesnt always work, and sometimes I spend 10 minutes or so, and end up pushing all the insulin out and starting over! I hear ya on that..so frustrating, and the kitties are all just meowing their heads off waiting to be fed. Will be interesting to see Maxs numbers the next couple cycles on the vial. Paws crossed. Oh, nice pmps number..he surprised you eh? ;-)

Surprised me is an understatement. What is happening here is a mystery and it makes me so nervous.

Re: 9/23 MAX PMPS 146+2/115+3/73+4.25/46+4.75/45+5.25/63

Do you "prime" your syringe before you start pulling the insulin?

Pull the plunger in/out/in/out several times first to spread and even out the lubricant inside that makes it easy to push/pull

Then push the plunger as hard as you can and insert into pen and draw out the correct dose and remove from pen/vial

Pull MORE air into the syringe and then tap to encourage all the bubbles to go to the top where there should now be a big bubble

slowly expel the air that's accumulated at the top

Hopefully it will take the bubbles with it

Hey Max! Time to get your surfboard out and climb up onto it!!

No wonder you're up late enough to look in on Cinco! Max took you for a ride tonight. Nothing wrong with the insulin in the vial, for sure! Guess the correct answer was: He's just being a cat!

My DH never mentions issues with bubbles, so I don't know if he has them or not. I'll have to ask. I hope you get yours resolved. This is something that could make you pull your hair out! :?

I hope Max settles down soon and lets you get to bed. Sounds like you could use the rest.

Still praying for your DM. Maybe the stress you feel over your DM affects your kitties and causes them to have problems? Just speculating here... not much help, I know.

Re: 9/23 MAX PMPS 146+2/115+3/73+4.25/46+4.75/45+5/63+6/64+

Looks like he is surfing now so I am off to bed. I hope you are too. I don't think Max is off due to my stress. I think the extra juice got him into green. Thanks for the prayers.
