Happy Thursday LL peeps and sugarbabies!

Good news is Gracie seems to feel really good today so we thought her AMPS would be much lower than it is. For the first time since her BG went up, she jumped up in bed with us and decided we were both filthy and needed baths  Don't know where we're headed in numbers today but were hoping this bounce would come down. Hope everyone has a great day.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313

Question from one of Eva's posts I just read: do the freeze dried chicken treats (Whole Life) have alot of carbs? I thought I saw them on a list somewhere of low carb treats. That's the treat we give Gracie for her treatments (testing and also eye soaks) and also we sprinkle them on her food if she's being a little picky...she always cleans her plate then.

If those aren't good ones...what are others using? She really loves those treats! Thanks!

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Have a few questions pls

If you are using single ingredient freeze dried treats there should be no carbs. Plain chicken meat has no carbs , I'm not sure about salmon but I doubt it, and no carbs in the original meat means no carbs in the freeze dried.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313

Thanks, Ann!! Yes....it is just freeze dried chicken with nothing else. How is Tess today? I've been trying to run through everyone's posts but am running short of time and need to get to work. Have a great day.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313

Gracie, you want to come to the ball early and help w/ Raja's Spa Day? You sound like you are good at giving baths and we need to get rid of her vetty smell so she feels good for the party. -- Tess

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313

I gots lots of slobbers this mornin' pals. I likes to give kissesssss. Anysing for Raja feels better!!

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313

Gracie's been panting off and on the last few day when her BG is higher. I've checked her temp but it's normal. I know you all said when the BG is getting low, your cats' ears feel cold...Gracie's are warm. Should I be worried about the panting? Not like her but it's started since BG went up. She doesn't do it incessantly...I just see her do it occasionally...like she'll bathe and then pant a little.

Thanks!

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

Morning Marjorie - saw that same thing on Eva's condo, I wonder if they were looking at it as a protein hit on her kidneys. I think the plain dried chicken is no carb, so ... the protein thing was the only thing I could figure. don't know anything about the panting, sorry.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

Thanks, Kim....maybe you're right...probably the protein. Yeah..I'm concerned about the panting. Appreciate your response!! Hope Shadow is doing well today.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

Hi Marjorie

I don't have any advice about the panting.

As for the freeze-dried chicken, we use it because it has no or low carbsand Achilles loves it. He just can't get enough of it. In fact, our civvie cat, who generally will not eat out of our hands makes an exception for the freeze dried chicke. It's kitty crack!!

I was thinking about decreasing the treats to reduce the amount of protein and calories he is getting.

Thanks for visiting my condo too. I appreciate your encouraging words.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

I'll leave panting issues to Jill and others more astute about kitty health...

But about the treats, the Halo Liv-A-Littles list sodium in the ingredients. Kitty has gotten to the point where he won't eat without chicken dust, and I've been worried about his getting too much salt. Someone else mentioned that the freeze-dried treats you get at PetSmart have no salt at all, so a choice is available in freeze-dried chicken. (In other words, NOTHING is simple! )

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

Marjorie - I can't really address the panting issue. My big black cat Shnookie pants occasionally, but it's always been on a really hot day when he's outside, so I just bring him inside and it stops after he cools off. I did want to answer your question from yesterday about the alphatrak meter tho. I bought it because my vet said I needed to have it, and this was right when Muffin was dx, so I hadn't done any research at that point. The strips are outrageously priced - the cheapest I've found is about $56 for 50 strips, which is much better than thru the vet (they charged $71 for 50) but still very expensive. I have mentioned using a human meter to them, and they still insist it wouldn't be accurate. I do have a ReliOn meter I use when I run out of AT strips and there does seem to be a huge varying difference between the 2. At the same time I realize as long as you use one meter, it should be consistent with itself, so it doesn't really matter. I do intend to switch over to the ReliOn, simply for the cost savings, but for now, especially with Muffin being sick, I stick with the AT, as that's the one the vet can relate to.

ETA: Bottom line is: no, I would not recommend getting one if you're already using a human meter and happy with that, the cost just isn't worth it.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Gracie panting...need thoughts pls

Jill...thank you; I read the info and I have called my vet. Since it is only a couple times a day for a few seconds, they said she's ok...she just had a full blood panel and urine done. But I'm to watch her closely. Can you please look at her spreadsheet and tell me if you still think she is bouncing? I'm worried that her numbers are still not coming down. I was thinking I'd do a +4, +6, +11 today in the first cycle...what do you think?

Anne...thank you for that info....just confirms what I've read.

Kathy...thanks also. We buy the "Whole Life" chicken treats from our pet holistic store and they have no sodium. I appreciate your response.

Hope you are all well.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 Jill/others...follow up question/bounce

Umm..... things like respiratory problems, cardiac problems, and neurologic conditions do not typically show up on routine blood work or a UA. Your vet would need to hear a respiratory problem, such as asthma, or an x-ray may be needed. Did you talk to the vet or anyone knowledgeable? (I'm sorry, but I think you got blown off.) Can you make a video when Gracie pants? You can send/bring the video to the vet and post it on Health.

Here's more info on treats.

A bounce can take up to 72 hours to clear. You're still in that time window. It's likely that Gracie's dose is going to need to be increased but for now, let the bounce clear. A +4 and +6 sound fine. How about a +9 or 10 so you can follow the last test with a snack?

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280

Sienne..thank you for the response. I didn't get back right away because I had gone out to the enclosed patio to check on Grace and I couldn't wake her up. It scared the pee out of me so I finally got her awake and did a +3.5. So guess I need to read the Dear Mom letter again as afterwards she took a bath and sauntered away from me like "can't a girl get a little beauty sleep?". Stupid mamabean.

Anyway...I did speak directly with my vet...she's very tuned in and has been having me text her Gracie's numbers; she also looks at her spreadsheet. I guess I should have been more explicit in my email...I have GOT to learn to give you all the whole picture so I apologize. Gracie did just have a full workup and my vet is very thorough. Her lungs sounded absolutely fine; she did not detect any heart murmur; she had an US by a board certified radiologist and it was clear...no problems evident. Grace's respirations are normal...I checked them. As a kitten, Gracie would pant alot when she played. She is also very, very plush. I can't entirely rule out that she isn't just getting warm out on the patio although we bring them in when it starts to get too warm. She was on the patio when I noticed it this morning. I will try to get a video but she only does it for a few seconds so it might be hard to run in, get the camera, and get back out before she stops...it's not like a dog does where they pant and pant...it's just a few seconds and only a couple times a day...and not every day.

Thanks for the info on snacks/treats...I found what I was looking for there.

Since I just got a +3.5 (in lieu of 4 because of my own panic  ) I will get a +6 and +10 and then immediately feed her so she'll have pretty much two hours before her PMPS. I hope this bounce does clear and I totally hear you on the dosecrease. My vet said the exact same thing as you and that it was too soon to up the dose right now. I am relying on you all to suggest when she might need that as it will probably come over the weekend. I'm thinking the 72 hours will be up by Friday night.

Thank you, Sienne...you are wonderful and I so appreciate your help. Hope Gabby is doing well today. I am always happy to get your thoughts and advice. Gracie sends you headbutts.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280 +6 206

Hi Marjorie, the panting thing could be as simple as stress. I occasionally when stressed find it hard to kind of catch my breath for a few seconds. Cat's being unable to talk can't tell us what's up with them but they do have emotions and pick up on ours really quick.
She is having a whole new set of thingy's being done to her...plus excessive attention from mommie bean so possibly when she thinks about it she gets a little nervous.
also with her bg's fluctuating her body may be feeling a little out of whack.

Having said that I'm thinking 'oh boy the good old days' when i was new i used to take tom's temp just becuase his nose was dry. then report it on the board...as well as watch his every step after his shot becuase he always got sleepy after it and i was afraid he might die or something. oh god, listening to hear if he was breathing in the middle of the night.
yep, the good old days  you will look back and laugh!

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280 +6 206

Hey Marjorie - Hi Gracie! I hope you guys are having a good day - Gracie's numbers are improving, seems better every time I look. What a nice +6. I enjoyed Lori's comments about the good ole days - it takes me back too, when I'd worry about every little thing. it's all so true.

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280 +6 206

Hey Lori and Michelle

Yes....I am of the hovering Mom type...can't help it. Gracie had a vet visit today so her number is up a bit but not too bad considering.
Thanks for telling me about your good ole' days, Lori...I need to know I'm not the only obsessive one out there

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280 +6 206 +10 244 Neuropathy ?

Hope everyone is enjoying the Harvest Moon!!!

Gracie went to the nutrition vet today...a little stress but not too bad. Her +10 is 244.

But this afternoon, I've noticed her walking a few feet, then plopping down. It takes her a bit to get down the hallway. I don't know if she's just pooped from the high numbers lately and the stress today or if she's trying to get neuropathy in her back legs. I read the info on neuropathy...one thing caught my eye...it said something about getting the diabetes under control first; well...that could take awhile so is it safe to get my vet to go ahead and get us some methylcobalamine at the appropriate dose? If she tells us the dose, can I just get it at a health food store? If she doesn't really have neuropathy, it won't make any difference if she gets the methylcobalamine right..she'll just pee it out?? Any info is greatly appreciated. Thanks!

Re: 9/23 Gracie AMPS 313 +3.5 280 +6 206 +10 244 Neuropathy ?

Sienne

What about the other questions...do I need an absolute diagnosis or should I do it preventatively? Gracie weighs 8.6 lbs.

I'll be honest with you, this is sending up red flags for me, especially because you were talking about panting earlier. It *could* be the heat or stress, or it could be cardiac. You've been home for a while, has it been lessening or getting worse?

Re: 9/23 GracieAMPS313+3.5 280+6 206+10 244 Another Neuropathy ?

Libby

She panted only a little when we brought her home from the nutrition vet...it's hot here and we keep our house warm so between the ambient heat and stress, I could see her panting a bit. Her heart rate and respirations were totally normal at the vet and she did not hear a murmur. Her heart rate and respirations are normal now...I have a stethoscope here to listen to their hearts. I am not taking your comments lightly and we are watching her closely. So she's only panted a twice today for just seconds...once when she was on the patio and once when I brought her home from the vet.

My DH says I am imagining the neuropathy; she just seems lethargic and plops down but she was moving around after my last post and jumped up on the recliner and after squids, jumped down from the condo...she didn't have any balance problems. Mike thinks she's just had a stressful several days and is just tired...her BG has been high since this bounce. I have had her echo'ed for a baseline a few months ago because I had a cat with heart issues. ..everything was normal. On an aside, our kitten just came in from the patio a few moments ago and he was panting a little...maybe it's life with me :!: We are here watching her; we have good ERs; I have a call into my regular vet.

I trust you all and I will watch her for signs of cardiac inc throwing a clot to the back legs. I'm also trying to get other info as I have no idea about the onset of neuropathy...is it quick, is it gradual...perhaps it's been slowly working it's way up...I don't know...I am probably one of those people that sees a symptom of something and think my cats have it.

I appreciate your concern...I will continue to watch her and keep you all posted. I'm not sure what they could do at the ER as they do not have an echocardiogram...if she is still lethargic in the morning, I can take her to my vet where they do echos and have her baseline.

Re: 9/23 Gracie 280+6 206+10 244 PMPS 260 Resp to Libby

I just woke her up to do her PMPS test and feed and shoot. She seems much perkier now and ate really well again. I am afraid I got the needle in too steep because she mewed but I know it was in the skin and I checked after shooting...no fluid and no lantus smell.

Re: 9/23 Gracie 280+6 206+10 244 PMPS 260

hope it's just under the skin and not in the skin  no, seriously.
i have a feeling another day or two and gracie may get a dosecrease?

Re: 9/23 Gracie 280+6 206+10 244 PMPS 260

Well it sure felt under the skin...I did the tent, made sure I could see skin...I think maybe I stuck it in too far. If it is in skin, then what...no juice tonight? Guess we'll see at +4.
