9/22 Max AMPS 287 +2 334 +4 211+ 6 121 + 7 122

Max had a good day yesterday, Lori. Then the bounce. He will start to bounce a little less, or maybe not so high, once he gets used to getting better numbers. It might be a while though. You're doing a great job with him.

I think Max may come down for you today. We will see! I hope so. His overall trend when looking at your spreadsheet is getting better. How is he behaving? How is his appetite?

Nice pretty blue all day then 455. I am convinced that his Flovent has something to do with it, unless it’s just a coincidence and he bounces a couple of hours every time after getting the inhaler. I may be wrong but Max seems to be very sensitive to steroids. Every cat is different. Flovent is supposed to be limited to the lungs but as a medical provider I know that there are capillaries and vessels in the lungs that can absorb some of the steroids and those vessels can carry it systemically. Even if it’s very minute amounts. In Max’s case I believe that’s what is going on. I was going to skip today to see what happened, the vet advised me to. I’m gonna talk to internal medicine about that next week at NCSU. That is where he was diagnosed with feline asthma. I was just too worried he may start having breathing difficulties so I didn’t skip. His asthma is doing fine but he has to be on the inhaler this time of year or he definitely will have a flare. I may not know much about feline diabetes but I do know how pharmaceuticals work in people, so I’m pretty sure it could potentially affect a cat as well.

Cat's don't bounce from Flovent. They bounce when they are seeing lower numbers than they are used to, or fast drops. He's still not used to longer stretches of lower blues. You might want to try an experiment of giving Flovent the same time every day and see what happens. Or mark on the spreadsheet every day/time that you give it, so you can see if there are any effects. So far I'm not seeing a pattern, but I can't tell when exactly you give it.

I was wondering if it was a bounce from not being used to lower numbers, or if it was the Flovent causing a spike from the steroid. I wondered if it was just a coincidence that he bounced (from numbers being lower than used to) about 2 hours after the Flovent. I really thought it could be the steroid causing a rise in BG. His vet told me it could be. I haven’t really been giving it at the same time each day lately because of so much going on at home, but it just seemed like his BG went up like a couple of hours after I’d give it to him. I will start giving it at the same time each day and see. I will put it on the spreadsheet as well. He has to have it anyway. I think it just gets discouraging sometimes with these ups and downs, but I know it will take some time. Thank you.

A lot of people who give flovent or pred (or other meds) write in their spreadsheet when they give it — I mean in the cell of the hour in which they give the med. This allows tracking of possible BG response to the medication.
