Good Morning, Lantus land Neighbors!

Yesterday's Parties Condo

Sending healing thoughts and hugs to the kitties and beans who need them this morning.

Today's News:

AMPS: 327
+2.75: 403
+4: 280
+6: 306

PMPS: 466
+2.5: 375

Clare held a surprise PJ party last night and we had a lot of fun; but we're all feeling a bit sore this morning and it's still dark out, so not much new to report. We'll be back after a few more zzzzs. BTB for now,

Oh Happy Equinox, everyone!

Re: 9/22 Clare AMPS 327;+2.75-403

Thanks, Amy!

If you told me last week that I'd be begging for a bounce, I'd have thought that was impossible. But hopefully that's what Clare's doing this morning. We'll test her off and on, anyway -- she's been diving at odd hours since we upped her dose.

For the moment, it's a beautiful fall day -- mild temps, colorful leaves, sunshine and fluffy clouds -- and Clare and I are going to enjoy them before I jump into cleaning up the veggie garden.

Have a great day, everyone!

Georgette

P.S. Question: Does anyone have some ideas about what to do for sore cat ears? We've been using the antibiotic cream + pain but Clare's ears are red around the poking places. Poor girl, her ears have been working hard! cat_pet_icon

Ah the transition to wanting a bounce, this is what I call love/hate of the once dreaded bounce. Now I look at a bounce 2 fold, 1. Gives kitties ears a break from pokies, 2. Allows me to get caught up on sleep and have a little bit of me time w/o being overly concerned where his numbers are dropping to.

For sore ear pokies, Neosporin ointment - the pain relief one. We used it quite often for the first year, and now Zener's ears are a bit tougher. There is also another ointment that works for some kitties in LL who have an allergy to something in the Neosporin I am blanking on at the moment. Hopefully, someone will see your question and be able to advise on other options, just in case.

Hi Georgette,
Sorry about Clare's sore ears. It is common, however, in the first few months of dealing with FD. Do you gently warm the ear before poking? I have found that a soft, damp washcloth warmed for 10-15 seconds in the microwave and then put in a plastic bag is a lot gentler than the warm rice sock. What gauge lancet are you using? The higher the number, the thinner the lancet. You can get really thin 33 gauge lancets, but they might be too thin if Clare's ears do not bleed easily. I tend to use 30 gauge in the colder weather, and 33 in the warm weather. I use the Neosporin Creme with pain killer, too (at this point in Rusty's FD adventure I only use it at bedtime; I like the way it absorbs), but many here use the Neosporin Ointment with pain killer. Perhaps use the creme during the day, if necessary, and the ointment only at bedtime. The ointment probably is a bit more effective than the creme, but if you use it during the day, you have to wipe it off before testing again. I use plain vaseline on Rusty's ear before doing the poke so that the blood drop beads up.

Good luck!!

Thanks for all the good ideas, Darin and Anne and Ella!

Darin, that exactly describes what I'm feeling today with Clare bouncing.

Anne, we use the Neosporin cream but not the ointment, so I'll look into that.

Ella, that's a good idea to use the Neosporin (ointment or cream) at bedtime and the Vaseline during the day.

I use the Neosporin with pain relief too. It is the ointment. I put a tiny bit on Furball's ear after each poke. If I know it is the last poke of the night, I will put a little bit more on because I know it won't interfere with getting a blood drop on the next poke. Since Furball has dark ears, I bought a headlamp that I use to help me see the blood drop easier so I don't have to poke so many times. I also feel her ear before I poke, and if I feel any rough spots that might still be sore, I can avoid poking in that spot.

Thanks, Carla,

I can see from your post and from the others' that ear-poking is an art -- a compassionate one -- so thanks for describing the different methods to help keep her from hurting. I plan to try everything.

Hugs,

Georgette

Re: 9/22 Clare AMPS 327;+4-280;+6-306;PMPS 466 Sore ear reli

Hi Georgette and Clare! Sorry to hear that your girl's ears are hurting. I always feel awful when Billie seems bothered after a lot of poking.

The ingredient in Neosporin that cats are most often allergic to is neomycin, although they can be allergic to other ingredients too. Billie is allergic to it (among other things) so we tried Polysporin, which is Neosporin minus the neomycin. Of course, I had to stop that as well because Billie is still having allergy issues and I have to eliminate all suspects. Allergies aside though, the Neosporin ointment with pain relief seems to help most kitties, and Polysporin is a nice alternative if allergies are a concern.

If Billie's ears are looking particularly banged up or if I have a bad poke that bleeds a lot, I hold an ice cube wrapped in paper towel against her ear. She actually seems to like it, as long as it doesn't melt and drip on her. She will usually sit still for it, so it must make her feel better.

I hope Clare's ears feel better soon! At least bouncy cycles have a couple perks - more sleep, less poking.

Thanks for the ice cube idea, Deanna. I bet Clare will like it. She has cold ears so often I wonder sometimes if that's the way she likes them to be.

Have a good night and scritches to Billie!

Hi Georgette,

I'm so glad you asked that question. The answers here have been so helpful. I'm going to try vasoline and I dug out the ear relief cream that I had for Ang. I had forgotten about it. We're in Australia and I couldn't get Neosporin - Angie has sensitive skin and has reacted to a few different topical medications. I used Calendula cream and found that it was very relieving. She loved me putting it on. I only did it on her last test before a gap because it needed cleaning off if I put on too much.

I love the name Georgette, by the way.

Have a good sleep.

Grace
