Hi everyone - I didn't post this weekend because I'm so upset and stressed out I think I might lose my mind. I took Bob to the vet on Saturday and the dr. wanted to rule out a hairball so she gave me cat lax and reglan syrup. She said the reglan is an anti-nausea med but it helps "move things along". Well, I had to give him 3 ml twice a day (huge amount!) and he freaked out and foamed at the mouth - it was hideous so he won't be getting that again. He's not eating much and last night I could tell he did not feel good at all. He's purring strange and making little noises and just overall doesn't feel well. the dr. said if the medicine didn't work, then she could do a radiograph or something where they give him barium and then take xrays of it going down to see if there's anything there.

I just don't know what to do. I have spent every last penny on bob and his diabetes. I can't just let him lie around and be sick though. But at the same time, I don't want to stress him out with all these tests that may be unnecessary. I'm going to take him in for bloodwork and fluids today, but we just had it about a month ago and everything was relatively decent. I don't think it could be pancreatitis, because the vet examined him and he didn't seem to mind. He also lies on his back sometimes and I mess with his belly and he seems ok with it. It's obvious something is going on because for the last few weeks these really high numbers seem to be related to the nights when he feels the worse.

Does anyone have any ideas on what kind of testing he might need? We have nice vague symptoms except for the swallowing hard - lethargic, not eating much, stress purring and making those weird noises....

It figures I have to fly to Texas again this weekend. This always seems to happen...

Sorry I'm having a pity party - I just feel sick for my poor boy and I'll do everything I can to figure out what's wrong. Money is starting to become an issue and we all know how stressful that can be.

Sorry I'm in such a foul mood - I really do hope everyone has a good day and everyone is feeling ok.

So sorry Bob is not feeling any better
I have no advice but will keep sending you tons of feel better and $$ vines.
Hang in there Dara :YMHUG:

First off, if the vet thinks Reglan is necessary, it's in pill form.

I would post on Health and ask if contrast (e.g., barium) is necessary for an abdominal x-ray. If they are talking about a CT scan, that will be very big bucks and would probably necessitate anesthesia. I'm pretty sure the vet should be able to tell if there's a blockage based on an x-ray and these are pretty inexpensive. You might drop Anne/Zener a note since Zener has GI motility issues so they are very informed about how they manage Zener's issues.

Poor Bob, and poor you. I've been through the "foam at the mouth" reaction to meds, and it truly is dreadful. I wish I had answers for you, but at least I can send along our thoughts and prayers that you figure it out easily and affordably. Please do lean on us here when you need to....LL has the best shoulders ever.

Thanks guys for stopping by. He was doing so well the other day, I thought things were going to smooth out a little! I posted on the health board and I pm'd Anne & Zener to see if something might be familiar to them. I just hate this not knowing what is wrong.

Sending tons of healing vines, and positive thoughts for Bob to get better. Unfortunately, I don't have any answers, either. Lord knows I wish I did. Hang in there, ok? :YMHUG:

Off topic: I'll send you a PM about your visit here. :-D

Here's what I sent in the PM to Dara:

Dara, I'm sorry Bob is not feeling so great sometimes. It is very distressing for us when Zener is feeling punk and not eating. Are Bob's poos normal? Good consistency, good size and regular?

Zener is on a bunch of meds and supplements. He gets miralax (3/32 teaspoon BID) to soften the stool. We have always used cyproheptadine for appetite stimulant and ondansetron, 1 mg BID, for nausea (you should use an anti-nausea drug with an appy stimulant). The cypro is just a tiny piece, maybe 1/32 or less of a 4 mg pill. I have started giving it to him every morning and sometimes Anne gives it at night too. He also gets Cerenia, which helps with vomiting, motility and pain. He gets 4 mg (1/4 of a 16 mg pill), 3 times per week. There are injections if the cat is vomiting and pill form for motility. The pills are much cheaper and less traumatic. He also get zantac, 1/8 of a 7.5 mg pill, BID. That helps with acid tummy and motility. Pepcid is an alternative but zantac seems to be better for motility. Recently, we started giving him 1 teaspoon squash BID (baby food, no other ingredients) to make his poos a little bigger. Hopefully, this will help keep his anal glands cleaned out, which is a problem for him.

Other meds include zobaline (B12 for peripheral neuropathy), 3 mg, BID, and some kidney support drops, 6 BID (homeopathic, don't really know if it helps   ). I think that's everything.

Sienne said that an x-ray would be much cheaper to see if there's a blockage, which I would agree with.

Let me know if this all makes sense.

Thanks guys! That's helpful - I'm going to print it out and take it to the vet this afternoon. The hard swallowing thing scares me and he acts like it's really uncomfortable. He usually eats and poops pretty well so I don't think it would be a gastro issue, but what do I know?? Thanks again for the info. BTW, does the cypro make Zener act nutty? I gave Bob an appetite suppressant once and he went insane (with the reglan too - he was up all night tormenting me!).

You mean appetite stimulant? ;-) We gave reglan to Zener and it caused him to have slight head tremors and we stopped right away. We just give a tiny crumb of cypro, otherwise it makes him rather frantic for food.
