Almost blue this morning, but left the fat on the drop. If she still shows not much improvement today I may go back up to .1 tomorrow. Hopefully I'll get results from the vet today. Muffin seems to be feeling fine this morning, but her fur looks a little too pokey again to me - moreso than yesterday. Have to be out for a few hrs this morning, but will get an out the door check at +1.5.

once the ABs do their work Muffin's numbers will of course come down and I'll bet her hair won't be so much pokey anymore.
I remember a while back, Punk had the pokey hair and it was explained to me that while a kitty is sick, the fur might get "pokey" due to the infection coming through the saliva while they clean themselves. This is one explanation for the bad hair day, I'm gonna run it by my new vet on Wednesday to confirm, not that I question my original source, it was JoJo. :mrgreen:

Interesting. I've always noticed (at least with Muffin) that her fur does that whenever she's not feeling perfect. It had actually been doing this for 2-3 days before I got the yellow numbers, so I figured something was going on. As soon as I saw those numbers, it confirmed my suspicions and off to the vet we went - and caught the infection early. I never knew why the fur did that, tho, so thanks for offering an explanation.

Was gone twice as long as I expected to be today and I come home to find Muffin hiding in the closet. With one pet, I could tell she was really feeling poorly. BG was 247. Got bw results - vet says she has mild pancreatitis. Spec FPLi was 4.4. They said they wouldn't even treat that in a non-diabetic cat. They gave me Denosyl to give once daily and re-check in 3 weeks. The only other possibly alarming result was GGT which was slightly high indicating inflamed gall bladder. He said that could be just due to the pancreas being inflamed and we'll know at the recheck. Eosiniphil was a little high - indicating either parasite (she doesn't have fleas, so worms would be only possibility there) or allergies. So I'm really glad I went back and had this done.

If anyone wants more specific results, or a comparison to 3 months ago (dx) I can post any actual numbers.

If the Kittenhood of the Traveling Soup is available, I think Muffin could use another visit.

Oh and if anyone could give me the link to that piller thingy I'd really appreciate it. I'm stressing about having to shove something down her throat on top of everything else, she's hiding from me and I miss her when she's not right here at the computer with me, I know she's feeling lousy, and that makes me feel lousy. I'm going to lay down for a bit, suddenly very tired.

did they mention anything about fluids or pain meds for the pancreatitis? If not, I would ask.

anne... our vet gave us ours free, but they carry them at petsmart, or if you prefer, amazon has them. just put in "pill gun cats" and it'll come up. i couldn't copy the link cuz i'm a dolt.

sorry to hear muffin's not feeling well!

you might want to read through jojo's chronic pancreatitis (or does my cat have a pepcid deficiency?) post.
she lists quite a few tools to have on hand to treat CP:

~SQ fluids
~ pain meds
~ anti-nausea meds (hey look pepcid falls in this category)
~ antioxidants (vitamin E ~water-dispersible form preferred and vitamin C ~non-acidic Ester-C form preferred)
~ liver support (milk thistle, denosyl, or marin)
~ vit b-12 injections(especially if bowel involved)
~ +/- pancreatic digestive enzymes (to 'predigest' food, however some controversy in vet med on whether or not to use these)
~ +/- antibiotics if indicated
~ +/- steroids if needed
~ +/- appetite stimulants if needed (and if liver not involved, some of these are contraindicated with liver issues)
can all be used to help the cat through the flare up. your vet can work up a treatment plan for managing your cat's CP flare up attacks.

last march, alex was diagnosed with kidney and liver disease as well as having an inflamed gall bladder. the vet prescribed ursodiol primarily to support the liver, but also because it has anti-inflammatory properties which he thought would help with the gall bladder. i don't know if it would help muffin, but it's something worth mentioning to your vet.

If Muffin is feeling nauseated or not eating, Pepsid may also be in order. I guess I'd be thinking about treating this aggressively since it seems like you caught it early.

Everybody hit on the things I would mention and what I have done.

Fluids for sure is something you should get. They are easy to give and I found that both mine were noticeably better after them. just get the vet tech to show you how and you are set. Get the smallest needles they have. Think of a parched plant after it's been well watered and how the leaves perk right up. Fluids really will help.

Pain meds should be obtained as pancreatitis is painful. I got Bupe for Shadoe both times. they also gave me some codeine transdermal ear gel but Shadoe HATED it for some weird reason. It worked fine but I think she felt too stoned on it. Think doubled over with cramps; pain meds will help with that.

Last is pepcid which definitely helps. Shadoe has gas still after her pancreatitis cleared, her numbers were 13.7 and then 15, but she's down to 1 now. The pepcid makes her seem 'relieved' so it must be doing something good.

And that's the 3 things I think are important to help clear up the pancrreatitis.

Gave her the Denosyl at +11. The vet said a half hour before food, but medi-vet.com says an hour. Anyone who has used it before, how soon before food did you give it?

Celi - I'll head to petsmart (if Muffin lets me) tomorrow.

Libby - vet did not mention fluids or pain meds - I'll definitely ask about them tomorrow.

Jill - thank you so much for the links, I will read that. The vet did mention inflamed gall bladder but seemed to think (or was hopeful) it's most likely because the pancreas is inflamed.

Gayle - I will call them tomorrow and ask about fluids - he did say she was slightly dehydrated, but didn't mention doing anything about it. What is the whole name for Bupe, so I can ask about that as well. And where can I get Pepcid? Is it just a people OTC thing?

Kittenhood of the Traveling Soup - Thank you thank you thank you! Muffin has come out and is waiting a bit too patiently for dinner. I think she's hungry, as she'll sit in her food spot for a min, but then she gives up, so I'm not sure how much she'll eat tonight - maybe she ate too much soup?

Sienne - I do think it was caught early, but I think it's worse now than the test results say - that was 2 days ago, and she's obviously feeling much worse now than she was then, so I'm worried that it's going to keep getting worse. Somehow a liver supplement doesn't sound like very aggressive treatment to me. I hope it works.

Poor Muffin! The "piller" did great things for us when our civvie, Kiki, needed pills. One of us would hold her like a baby and we'd put a towel around her torso, keeping her legs in check. She looked like a kitty burrito, but it seemed less stressful for her than the other route. I hope Muffin is feeling better soon. It's so sad to see your baby not feeling good. Keep up the good mama-ing and big, fluffy healing snowflakes coming your way!

The first pilling episode: Had DS help me hold her. She spit out the pill twice and I missed her mouth entirely once, but we finally got it in there and I held her mouth shut while we stroked her throat. She took so long to swallow that for a minute I thought she would out-stubborn us. But we won! Not something I'd like to attempt on my own yet tho.

pmps 212 I upped her dose again to .1. I really don't want her hanging out in the yellows while she's got all this other fighting to do. She's chowing down dinner right now, so nausea doesn't seem to be a problem, at least at the moment. Ab's in an hour and a half. Will stay up til at least +3 and will stay home tomorrow with her (other than for a trip for a pill gun).

Oh, no! Muffin! So sorry, Anne. Wishing you both well. I'm sure she'll be knocking bowls around in no time.

I will pass along a strange trick a vet tech taught me with pilling: after you put the pill in, blow into her mouth. It causes a swallowing reflex. Sounds stupid and I never thought it would work because, much like wet food, I'd never had any success getting Weeble to swallow a pill. Ever. She would hide it somewhere in her mouth EVERY time. But, I swear, it actually worked. I popped it in blew into her mouth and down it went, and it was over.

Hope it works for Muffin, too. Good luck and get well soon, please.

BTW...I have absolutely no idea how many carbs pill pockets have in them so they may be out of the question but Dr. Lisa Pierson
turned me on to them; I've never used them with Grace because she doesn't like them but my two older civvies love them. But
again, they may be way too high in carbs..but if they aren't and Muffin will eat them...it's the easiest way to get pills down. Sleep tight Muffin and Anne.
