BIOPSY
The vet that did the amputation surgery called with the biopsy results
There were cancer cells present in the wound
They checked the lymph node and no cancer cells present there and they took a few samples from higher up the leg and did not see any cancer cells there either
This vet, Jupiters regular vet (from the same practice as vet who did surgery) and his oncologist all agree that Jupiter should still have the chemo treatment done in order to make sure that no cancer has spread (since this cancer spreads through the blood) and make sure to wipe out any if it has.... (although I am still not sure how I am going to be able to pay for all the chemo treatments)

The staples will be removed on Monday Sept. 23rd at 4:30 with Jupe's regular vet. (so 11 days after his surgery was)


Jupiter barely ate anything at all yesterday. Ended up syringing him a few teaspoons of the Iams maximum calorie.

He did eat on his own this morning - a decent bit too... so I am hoping he will continue to eat on his own. (I am hoping now that he is done with the AB's - his appy will improve)

This morning Jupiter has been very active. I did not give him pain meds today... (last dose was .3ml at 2am last night)... if he seems to be in any pain I will give him a very small amount of Bupe. Since surgery was a week ago I need to get him off of these pain meds. He doesnt seem to be in pain so far today...... Jupiter kept trying to get under the couch this morning. I am so exhausted and cant keep up with him and other kitties.

He is still very swollen. I am very nervous about the staples coming out....

I am going to try to post a video at some point of Jupiter walking! :-D

Overall, it looks like a good report! No lymph node involvement is a BIG cause for a rainy YARD DANCE!!!

This really does sound like a very good report. You made an excellent decision to do the amputation, and hooray for no cells in the nodes!!!! I'm so glad to hear Jupe is getting more active, and ate well today. Our prayers continue for you!!!

Good report on nothing in the lymph nodes! And great to hear that he is starting to get around and EAT!

Sounds like a good report. Nothing in the lymph nodes is great. So glad he is interested in eating, always a good sign. Will look forward to the video. Keep eating Jupiter!

FANTASTIC news!! I know you're still concerned about the possibility of spread of the cancer, but not having any sign of cancer in the lymph glands is worth celebration! Take joy in that and take each step as it comes.

Sounds like Jupe is doing really well considering how soon it is since the surgery...I look forward to seeing him walking around!

Keep eating your fuds Jupiter....your mommabean needs it as much as you do.

THATS FANTASTIC NEWS!!

You were worried pre-op that you were removing the leg uneccessarily - now you can put your mind at ease cos you did the right thing.
Its good the lymph nodes are clear.
Its good he ate on his own. Probably as you said, the ABS were upsetting his stomach.
Its great he is active too - it will help him adapt..

You need to get some rest and try to stop worrying so much - he is doing great!. Can you shut him in a quiet room each day for an hour or two so you can relax? It will also prevent him getting too active.

Overall that is a great report. The fact that there is no cancer in the lymph nodes is great. I'm glad Jupiter is getting around on his own and eating some. I hope he'll keep eating for you. Don't worry about the chemo now. Just take it one step at a time. Things will work out. Sending prayers and hugs to you, Jupiter and Dane.

Great report, Jamie :!: No better news re cancer than no node involvement. Jupe will be up and runnin' in no time.

what a relief to know the cancer isn't in the lymph nodes!! And also how exciting to hear that jupiter is wanting to be so active ... time to take a breather momma, you got your little guy through the roughest part .. he full fledged onto recovery!!

Good to see Jupiter is active and soooo glad the lymph nodes are clear! I am always amazed at how quickly animals recover from major surgeries. I did watch that YouTube video of the little 3-legged tuxedo kitty running and playing. Can't wait to see what Jupe can do! Keep eating your fuds, lil one!

This is a very positive report. We are happy that Jupe is moving around. That will help take down the swelling. Thinking of you tonight and sending lots of positive thoughts, prayers, and vines for more progress.

Thank you all so much for the support and visits. I just gave Jupiter a dose of Bupe. He kept meowing and I think hes in some pain. I want to try to get him off the Bupe, but I also dont want him in a lot of pain either. He seemed good most of the day and I didnt give him pain meds during the day at all but maybe after being active hes starting to have some pain. He did eat today, but still not anywhere near as much as he should be eating

Awe my poor baby Jupe. Hes acting in a lot of pain now. Sure hope the Bupe helps him soon. I feel so bad :sad:
 
He might have overdone it today. I would talk to the vet about how much bupe to give him and when. He is still doing great though.
 
You're doing an amazing job with him Jamie. I know you're concerned about how much medication to give him....maybe it would work better to just give him a little (not even a whole dose) earlier in the evening, especially if he's had a more active day. Try to stay ahead of the pain. It's a lot harder to control pain once it gets to a certain level.

He'll need it less and less as he continues to improve!
 
Just popping in to say hello and you're doing an amazing job! I hope the Bupe helps soon. I'm glad to see improvements for Jupiter and hope he continues to flourish and heal :-D :-D
 
there's no big issue with giving him the bupe - i'd give it to him on schedule and keep ahead of the pain. punkin took it for a long time, every day, and then he went off of it without problems. you don't want him hurting and that was a very major surgery.

He seemed to do great today without the Bupe. More active and atleast he ate a little. He didnt act in pain very much and he was mostly active very early in the day. Maybe he put some pressure on it in a weird way or something... not really sure. He is resting in the crate now and seems to be content.
 
Hi Jamie. So good. To read that Jupiter is active and eating some. I'm sure his appetite will improve as his recovery progresses. The biopsy report from the vet was real good news.

We have you guys and Jupiter in our thoughts and Prayers Jamie.
 
Cats seem to be able to do a good job of "masking pain" when they are hurting. If it gets to the point where it's obvious that Jupe is in pain, it's probably pretty strong pain. And like others have said, you want to stay ahead of the pain, not try to catch up to it.
I'd give him the Bupe as long as you have it available. Even a tiny dose is better than nothing.

I agree with Carl. It's not until they are in extreme pain that a cat will let you know. Best to keep on a regular schedule of pain meds. It won't hurt Jupe to take Bupe as long as he needs it.
Also, it may be good to wait a few days before deciding to do chemo. It'a a big decision and it doesn't sound like it's absolutely necessary at this point. Chemo isn't exactly a "just in case there is more cancer" drug. It's a very strong drug with unpleasant side effects - best used when it's "definitely cancer" but if you decide to go ahead, it's important to feel confident and positive about your decision. Sleeping on it for a few days always helps!
 
This cancer is a very aggressive cancer though and his oncologist says he needs the chemo to make sure all of the cancer is gone. We have been thinking about this for a few weeks now and we do feel this is the best option for him and also the best chance at him living a long and healthy life. His oncologist thinks that after the 5 chemo treatments he will start feeling better and he is otherwise healthy.

We are getting low on Bupe ....
 
Just as an FYI... Chemo is a bit different in cats than humans. Compared to humans, cats get a much lower dose and don't experience the side effects that humans do. Kitties tolerate the chemo well. Usually, they are "off" for a day or two and then back to normal.
 
Yes the vet said that Jupiter will do great with chemo since he is otherwise a healthy kitty. She said cats do not lose their hair/fur like a human would and do not experience the same side effects. She said side effects are very rare in cats and if they have bad side effects then they would not do anymore chemo. The oncologist said quality of life is a big concern to her and she wouldnt do anything to make Jupiter not feel well.
