Hi everyone. I was posting on the main board because Tootoo was diagnosed with pancreatitis a week ago Friday. I got great advice there, and he was fully recovered by Tuesday. At that time, the vet looked at his spreadsheet (which I printed off for her), and she and another doctor agreed that he was in remission on the diabetes and that I should stop the insulin, which I did. So he's been off the insulin for a little over a week. Vet's instructions were that if he started to go up over 150, put him back on. He's been pretty good, but tonight he was at 164. This was after 81 yesterday morning.???

More data: When he was diagnosed with pancreatitis, I started feeding him anything I could get him to eat just to get him to eat. The vet thought that the change to Fancy Feast might have triggered the pancreatitis because of the higher fat content. (He was on dry his entire life until diagnosed with diabetes July 19th, then I changed him over in the course of about 5 days to Fancy Feast classics.) She suggested Purina DM dry, which my original vet sold me when he was first diagnosed with diabetes. It was one of the few things I could get him to nibble when he had the pancreatitis. I had some extensive postings with other members on the other board regarding the best diet for a diabetic/pancreatitis cat. It's a problem because there is no cat food that is both low fat and low carb it seems.

Anyway, I fed him that for a few days, then started giving him Wellness Core canned in the a.m. and the Purina DM dry in the evening. Tonight I added in a can of Fancy Feast grilled. My poor civvie does whatever diet he gets. She, incidentally, was diagnosed with asthma a few days ago. No idea what diet she should be on....... She's on a steroid for two weeks then back to the vet for more x-rays.

I would really appreciate one of you experts out there to look at Tootoo's spreadsheet and tell me what you would do. Put him back on insulin? If so, how much? Get him back on strictly low-carb? (Don't want to trigger another pancreatitis attack.) Not sure why he went up to 164 tonight, unless it was the FF Grilled. I tested before I fed him the dry. Anyway, I appreciate any feedback.

Just checked again, 1 hour later, it was down to 151. Holding off on putting him back on insulin. Not sure though????

Regarding the pancreatitis, I'm pretty sure your vet(s) are not up to date on feline pancreatitis. The issue of fat in the diet is more relevant to dogs than cats. You might want to look at this clinical roundtable on feline pancreatitis by experts in the field. Page 12 talks about food and basically, there are no solid recommendations based on research.

By the criteria we use here, I would not have said that Tooloo was in remission. We view "normal" BG as 50 - 120. We titrate the dose down and then monitor for 2 weeks before indicating that a cat is in remission. Dropping the dose from 0.4u to 0.25u and discontinuing insulin that same day may have been too abrupt of a discontinuation. We try to have the dose at 0.1u for a week or until the cat's numbers drop below 50 before discontinuing insulin.

Ok. Thanks. Just tested him again, and he was at 83. What dosage do you recommend I put him back on? You don't think I should try taking him off the dry and seeing if numbers drop at this point?

By the way, does anyone know the carb content of Wellness Core canned - Turkey and Duck, and Venison and Lamb? I didn't see it in the food charts.

Debbie

I'd put him on .25u and you can adjust the dose if you need to once he's off dry.

Both of those Core foods are 5% calories from carbs.

Thanks! I'll start that tonight when I get home as well as get him totally off dry again.
