Still a little out of sorts with the change in routine because of losing his room. He's getting used to it. If he won't come upstairs for testing I take his box down to him and plop him on something. Getting growls but they don't scare me. I am encouraged that his numbers are remaining low with the dosage reduction.

We're encouraged for ya!

I'm tickled to death he is doing so well.

Out of curiosity, is there a specific recipe you use for your raw food mix? Approx how much carb is in it? I'm considering trying something with Lucian's diet, seems like insulin can only do so much with him and although Lev works better for him, maybe the change in diet would help. Although, I dunno if that's even possible. He has never eaten any type raw meat and will only eat turkey if cooked. Maybe I can make something with cooked turkey, a cooked natural diet. :-D I'll look around and see what I can find on that.

When I do raw I do cook the meat for about 10 minutes to kill the bacteria that might be on it (before I grind the meat- DON"T buy pre-ground meat as any bacteria on the meat will be ground into it during the process).

It is a pain to grind your own but instead of grinding (if you have no machine) you can cut it the size of dice or smaller and that helps the cats with dental cleaning (if they still have teeth) :-D

Re: 9/2 Snoball AMPS=101

I don't have a meat grinder, but I have a 30 yr old food processor with a steel blade that will grind meat, but not a fine grind, so that would work, I'd think. Give a little more chewing action. If it's partially cooked, should be easier to grind, yeah? Like I said though, the only meat I have ever been able to get Lucian to eat is cooked turkey. He won't anything else, raw or cooked. The price of turkey parts is crazy and don't even consider organic. :o $200 for a 25# turkey? I think not.

I use the recipe on Dr. Pierson's site catinfo.org. I do completely raw, no cooking at all. There is a recipe for partially cooked chicken and adding bone meal if you don't have a grinder. A food processor works for this. The most important thing is the ratio of meat to bone and the supplements. I add raw liver but not heart since it is difficult to source. There are other necessary supplements too like taurine, egg yolks, dry vitamin E, B-50, and Norwegian salmon oil. Once you buy those they last for a long time. Cooking some meat and feeding it to him is a nice treat but not a balanced diet. I went all out and purchased the grinder and all the supplements and bowls and separate measuring devices and a scale with my tax refund. There are cheaper ways to do it though.

I finally got my stubborn 13 year old on the diet (only took six months) and she is looking good. No more matted fur, no more water-laden hair balls, no more poopy stripes across my floor and not more diarrhea stuck to her back side. She's like a kitten again and her fur is so soft. I put parmesan on hers. I can help you if you decide to do it.

I, too, had an old blender that ground the meat but not the bone. I would do about 9 pounds at a time and freeze them in ice cube trays and then bag them once frozen.

I then bought a bigger grinder with my tax return last year and Sneakers stopped eating it   . I know she will eventually go back on it and I am hoping to get some deer meat, too, so I am keeping it for right now.

The recipe is Dr. Piersons and I added the bone meal. Initial start-up cost for the supplements was $45 from iHerb with the $5 off coupon. The only thing I've had to re-order was the bone meal- all else is 100 capsules and you use 3 per pound...
