Well - apologies in advance for the rambling story
Left the info packet (Hyde's BG for July and August on Lantus, the recent article (
http://journals.plos.org/plosone/article?id=10.1371/journal.pone.0127794) detailing the UK study with over 1200 diabetic cats, and the information about the IGF and IAA tests from MSU that I wanted to have run) on Tuesday night in preparation for her appointment on Saturday.
Been going to this vet for at least 10 years. Previous diabetic, Alex, went to another veterinary practice seeing a lovely vet who supported home testing and would review her numbers during each appointment. The owner of the practice was another story - we had a heated discussion when he insisted that I feed Purina DM (Alex would only eat dry food). Turns out his brother works for Purina.
After Alex passed and the owner drove away the nice vet, we switched to a closer vet. I knew of him because his triplets were Jr. volunteers at the non-profit where I volunteer (they train assistance dogs - I am the volunteer coordinator). He has been our vet for at least 10 years. When we got Tony (our youngest civie - 5 y/o) he brought fleas and worms into the house. Soon after we finally got rid of the fleas, one of the four had a vet appt., got his worm shot and I thought that since we had given insulin shots for years, that we could give the rest of the gang the worm meds. I was wrong, bigger needle and squirmy cats. The vet stopped at our home (1.5 mi away) after office hours and administered the rest of the shots. He has been a good & considerate vet to work with in the past.
Yesterday he called and left a long voice message. He appreciated the article but said that he "could not continue to provide phone diagnoses". I assume that he is referencing the switch from ProZinc to Lantus, which was done without an office visit but I did provide all the BG numbers that supported the switch. I don't think he realized that she has an appointment this weekend.
The bulk of his message was that we needed to find a "VRA" and gave me phone numbers of 2 places both about 20 miles from us. He said he did not have the expertise nor the equipment that her case would require.
I really felt like I was getting the brush off. I did call the office when I got home but just got the receptionist. I said that I would send a follow up e-mail and she said that she would make sure that he got it. I sent a short e-mail explaining why I had dropped off the info and asked if they would be able to take the blood sample on Saturday and send it to Michigan State for testing. I have not heard back yet.
I will definitely be calling and cancelling Jekyll's appt for Saturday. He is Hyde's litter mate and has some undiagnosed health issues going on. He used to be 22 lbs (always figured he would be our next diabetic). At 2014 vet visit, he was 17 lbs. Vet took blood and said it all looked fine and left it at that. In May 2015 (when Hyde was dx) he weighed just under 11 lbs. Vet took blood again, tested it in house, and said it still all looked fine. He basically said that Jekyll had cancer somewhere (he could not feel any tumors) and gave us steroids that might shrink any tumors and would provide palliative relief.
I was planning on taking Jekyll too on Saturday and insisting that some additional test be run because I don't think he is terminal. His symptoms are the weight loss, he farts like an elephant trumpeting (sorry to be so descriptive) and has thin diameter soft poops. He also vomits greenish yellow liquid either with some hairs floating in it or a small hair ball. He also has some pea sized bumps that the vet tested and were fluid filed cysts.
This vet does not seem to want to deal with patients that present a challenge. Assuming that he does the blood draw on Hyde this weekend, I will also get a copy of Jekyll's last 3 years of blood work to take with me to the new vets. I am not sure if I will continue to use his practice for the 2 younger civies that do not have any heath issues yet.
