I think he got a fur shot last night. This is HARD giving him the injections in the underbelly behind the hind leg there just is not enough skin to get a hold of and he fights me because he is not used to this. He tensed all up this morning and refused to let me shoot back there so I had to go to a different spot on his back but behind the scruff. I hope this is OK we will see what happens next. I may just go back to shooting the scruff we have always done it that way and are both comfortable doing it that way. I almost shot myself in the finger the other night and then last night I'm sure I got nothing but fur. If I had someone to hold him down for me it might be easier but this is just not working for me or my boy!

I have tried shooting other places but could not either. Maybe somebody that does can give you better advice.
Sometimes it is best just to do what you are comfortable with.

I am not a happy camper right now. I decided that I needed to try shooting in the hip area again as was instructed by my vet. I was getting a nice response in numbers and was able to drop the dose a whole unit. But once again tonight I am about 95% sure that all I gave Arnie was a fur shot. I have been giving him insulin for over 3 years and always the same way. He jumps right up on the couch when it is his "medicine time" and sits right next to me up close in the meatloaf position and lets me test him in one of his ears and then i shoot behind the scruff around the shoulders area. He never flinches and the whole process takes us less than 5 minutes. Well now the vet wants me to shoot in the hips area(s) but the problem is Arnie will NOT lay on his back for me or anyone else. He has never liked being touched on the belly at all. He likes his head and neck scratched but don't like anyone touching him anywhere else. So needless to say it is VERY hard to try and shoot in the hip area when he is in the meatloaf position. I can't get a hold of any skin, all I get is fur!!! I thought I had the needle in the skin tonight but after I shot I could feel a wet spot on his fur and could smell the insulin very strongly on him and on my hand. This is FRUSTRATING!! I need to find a way to shoot him back there. Mom is going to help me in the morning. We will get him on his back and I should be able to do it right with her restraining him but the problem is that mom is not always going to be there when it's time for his insulin. HOPEFULLY I will figure out something!

Bob....why don't you post on health and ask for help. I know a lot of people shoot in that area and may be able to give you some feedback as to the best way to do it. Arnie got used to you shooting him once I am sure once you both get the hang of it he will get used to it again. Sorry about the fur shot. :sad:
Putty does not like me to touch his belly at all either.

I shot J.D. in the scruff for years and the skin seemed to get real thick and sometimes almost felt like saddle leather to get through. I changed to shooting him on the sides, in front of the back legs. Right a Night, Left in the Morn.
In this injection site picture it would be called the Flank. I barely lift his fur a little to get a slight tent, and basically shoot straight in, and we use 1/2 inch syringes, too. I just put a little pressure on the back of his collor (or scruff) to hold him in place (standing up, or in the meatloaf position).
Jojo once thought that J.D. was so heavy big, that maybe the longer 1/2 inch needles would be better to get the insulin where it needed to go, under all the layers of skin and fat.
