Welp, Jake got a dosecrease last week to 3.0 I've been holding the dose so I can do a curve... he's been high all day today I'm hoping it's new dose wonkiness. But I'm not sure, other than the high BG readings all day he's in good spirits... even killed a moth after tormenting it for about two minutes! I don't know whats been going on with his BG this past month, when I took him to the vet he said Somagi effect, and despite the increase dose in insulin his numbers kept rising. I work all day tomorrow so I wont be able to get a curve out of him till at least Tuesday. Thankfully he's not peeing up a storm or drinking constantly. His appetite is normal and not ravenous, I have not been able to check for ketones today but yesterday's test turned up a negative. Right now he's sleeping underneath a lawnchair with what I swear to be a smile on his face, he really does love outdoors.

Anyone know what could be the deal? Even after raising his dose his numbers are high, and only a month ago 3 units was giving him numbers that were even too low sometimes... so I'm not sure. His teeth are fine, his breath doesn't smell rotten, he's poopin' purrin' preanin' as much as he's always done so he's a mystery.... thoughts? cat(2)_steam

lots ot times when a cat loses momentum for whatever reason (like your big dose reduction) the cat has to climb to an even higher dose to get a new breakthrough. What I would do is increase every 4 cycles by 0.5 units at a time until his numbers start moving. He can't stay high for this long, it's not good for him.

How old is your insulin? Has he had a vet exam/bloodwork/urinalysis recently? I would consider a vet exam, given that his numbers have changed so much. There might be something going on medically to cause this.

I agree with Libby. Jake's numbers don't meet the definition of Somogyi -- there's no low for a bounce -- and the research really doesn't support Somogyi in cats on Lantus.

He had some really low numbers about a month ago, hittin' down to even 40, you don't think that could be the "bounceback" which sounds a lot like Somogyi to me
Last vet visit was a couple months ago and his blood tests were good 'cept for the pancreatits diagnosis.

Also Jake's insulin is one month old on the 22nd I'm using the pen cartridges.

That would account for up to 3 days worth of highs, not a month.

If he hasn't been back to the vet since these high numbers started, then my first step would be to schedule bloodwork. Something has changed.

Got some numbers out of him tonight, and he killed another moth. He's on a roll tonight... he almost ate this one, but I got it away from him. He was disappointed in me for taking his kill and I had a little bit of a time getting him into the house for his evening shot. I got a 486 out of him at +9 and a 447 at PMPS so that made me feel a bit better... going to try to get a urine sample out of him tonight.
