Re: 9/18 Zener AMPS 306;+2.5 312;+4.5 233;+7 192 dental gel?
Back from the vet without too much drama! Anal glands were full and thick this time, so it was not easy. Zener was a trooper and is glad to be home!
His teeth/gums are getting very close to another dental, and our vet is not eager to do another one so soon. His last (with another vet) was in December and we had heaps of complications with his stomach, GI motility and not eating afterward that required syringe feeding. We thought he might not make it. She suggested we try some other things first to see if we can decrease the plaque and gum irritation using an oral paste ""Biotene - maintenance oral gel" used for plaque removal and inhibition of bacterial growth. She suggested only 2-3 times per week as it may affect his BG levels, and to use a very small amount spread on his gums with a finger or Q-Tip. She also suggested we try to brush his teeth if possible. These things might postpone the need for a dental. The paste contains a bunch of stuff but things that stand out to me are sorbitol, dextrose and glucose oxidase. Does anyone here have any experience with this gel and advice? We have not brushed his teeth before, but looks like we may have to try! We would prefer to not have another dental until absolutely necessary.
We go back in two months for another anal gland check and see how his dental situation is going.

@rhiannon - we hope the vetty visit doesn't affect his BG too much. nailbite_smile
@Libby & Hershey too - you are so right, he has been enjoying more greens lately!
@Michelle & Mannie - it looks like another slide in progress, depending on what the vetty visit does to his BGs. It seems that an every two month schedule is what he needs, poor guy.
@Ann & Maggie - and now he's blue, appy picked up too. Please send the KTSS! Poor guy had to pee when I put him in his carrier so he had that all over him, then the anal gland expressing and some salve on his bum from the vet. Lots of smells to get rid of today! :? We have paws crossed for some Maggie action soon!
@carla - thanks for the good vetty wishes! Zener just touched into blue before we left.
@Roni - thanks for the good vetty vines! He was on his way down and appy was on his way up, so we shall see what effect the vetty visit has on his BG.
Our vet was very happy to see Zener on her schedule today. Her day started with having to euthanize a cat newly diagnosed with FD. The owner was not going to be able to care for the cat and the cat was very ill with FD associated problems. She said it made her really sad to have to do that, but she also understood why some people are not able to provide the necessary care. She told me it really made her heart lighter to see Zener doing so well with FD. Are there options out there we could share with our vet about possible adoptions for a cat with FD that an owner can not care for?
