Ah well, all good things must come to an end, or something like that... It's a stinky pinky morning, not unexpected as the bounce started last night. More greens the last few cycles, so Mr Liver got all aquiver, once again. The big guy will get a pokey break today after lots of action recently. Gorgeous morning with yard rounds completed, poo patrol success, and napping time for kitters in progress. Appy is a little down this morning but otherwise all seems okay. Vetty visit this afternoon for anal gland check.

Re: 9/18 Zener AMPS 306;+2.5 312;+4.5 233

Hi Anne and Liz, glad Zener came down to a lower yellow. Sending appy vines and also good luck Vetty vines, too.
Zener, do you want the KTSS to swing by and give you a massage and rid the Vetty smell. Maggie has some left ove lavender scent.
Reporting from Mags, no prezzie yet. Have a nice day.

Re: 9/18 Zener AMPS 306;+2.5 312;+4.5 233

Hope everything goes well at the vet today. Maybe if the vet visit doesn't make Zener's BG go up you'll see some blue this evening.

Re: 9/18 Zener AMPS 306;+2.5 312;+4.5 233;+7 192 dental gel?

Back from the vet without too much drama! Anal glands were full and thick this time, so it was not easy. Zener was a trooper and is glad to be home!

His teeth/gums are getting very close to another dental, and our vet is not eager to do another one so soon. His last (with another vet) was in December and we had heaps of complications with his stomach, GI motility and not eating afterward that required syringe feeding. We thought he might not make it. She suggested we try some other things first to see if we can decrease the plaque and gum irritation using an oral paste ""Biotene - maintenance oral gel" used for plaque removal and inhibition of bacterial growth. She suggested only 2-3 times per week as it may affect his BG levels, and to use a very small amount spread on his gums with a finger or Q-Tip. She also suggested we try to brush his teeth if possible. These things might postpone the need for a dental. The paste contains a bunch of stuff but things that stand out to me are sorbitol, dextrose and glucose oxidase. Does anyone here have any experience with this gel and advice? We have not brushed his teeth before, but looks like we may have to try! We would prefer to not have another dental until absolutely necessary.

We go back in two months for another anal gland check and see how his dental situation is going.

@rhiannon - we hope the vetty visit doesn't affect his BG too much. nailbite_smile

@Libby & Hershey too - you are so right, he has been enjoying more greens lately! :-D

@Michelle & Mannie - it looks like another slide in progress, depending on what the vetty visit does to his BGs. It seems that an every two month schedule is what he needs, poor guy.

@Ann & Maggie - and now he's blue, appy picked up too. Please send the KTSS! Poor guy had to pee when I put him in his carrier so he had that all over him, then the anal gland expressing and some salve on his bum from the vet. Lots of smells to get rid of today! :? We have paws crossed for some Maggie action soon!

@carla - thanks for the good vetty wishes! Zener just touched into blue before we left. :-D

@Roni - thanks for the good vetty vines! He was on his way down and appy was on his way up, so we shall see what effect the vetty visit has on his BG.

Our vet was very happy to see Zener on her schedule today. Her day started with having to euthanize a cat newly diagnosed with FD. The owner was not going to be able to care for the cat and the cat was very ill with FD associated problems. She said it made her really sad to have to do that, but she also understood why some people are not able to provide the necessary care. She told me it really made her heart lighter to see Zener doing so well with FD. Are there options out there we could share with our vet about possible adoptions for a cat with FD that an owner can not care for?

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Vetty report above and question on dental gel. A slide into blue tonight with good appy and shot. The big guy had a bit of pudding poo after we got home from the vet, but no wonder considering the vet being up in his "bidness"! Zener has forgiven me for the vetty visit, what a sweetheart. cat_pet_icon

Our civvie Tillie, the Queen of Everything, has been a little low key the past few days. We are on the lookout for a hairball as she often acts this way when one is on the way.

Hope everyone has a drama-free Tuesday evening in LL and is safe from the stormy weather on the east coast of North America.

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Hi guys - no clue on the dental gel... but I do so understand on the not wanting to do another dental. I am close to that as well with Mannie ( due to age mostly and the ay the last two have gone)... I have a friend that suggested using a 50/50 mix of peroxide and water - using a Qtip to apply, very little required, and it removes all the gunk... I have yet to try it.... Good luck with the brushing... Mannie would rather bite my fingers off than let me brush teeth....

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Glucose oxidase is an enzyme, not a sugar. Sorbitol and dextrose are sugars.

I know that CET toothpastes (except the malt one) are ok for diabetic cats. CET also has a new foam thing you rub on the teeth and rinses and chew treats.

Here's a video on how to brush a cat's teeth: http://www.vet.cornell.edu/fhc/video/Teeth.htm

I didn't think Squishy would let me brush his teeth but he surprised me by just opening his mouth :o He liked the poultry flavor of the toothpaste more than the actual tootbrush action. Civie Emma needed some time to get used to toothbrushing. Leroy is very "mouthy" so it was no problem to stick a toothbrush in his mouth and swab around until his ADD kicks in

Re: 9/18 Zener AMPS 306;+2.5 312;+4.5 233;+7 192 dental gel?

Zener, I am so proud of you for your good behavior while dealing with the anal sacs ickiness. Would you please talk to Shasta about good behavior?! Please!!!! As for the tooth brushing, I hope something works out for the big guy. I don't like hearing about his Dec. appointment. No losing my favorite Zener!!! Who else will Shasta flirt with?! :-D

Hope his numbers come down nice and easy! Have a good night!! ~Deborah & Shasta

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Glad the vetty visit was relatively uneventful for Zener. I don't know about the gel, either...but I'm curious to hear what others have to say. I don't blame you for trying to hold off as long as possible on doing another dental, so many good tooth vines coming your way :-D !!

Have a great evening over there!!

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Sorbitol is a sugar substitute. The only think that is true sugar is dextrose. (Is it just me or why would you want to brush anyone's teeth with sugar?)

I use CET, as well, with Gizmo. Gabby won't have anything to do with my attempting to brush her teeth. CET also makes a kitty sized toothbrush.

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124 vet dental gel?

Hi guys,
I hope you find a solution to the dental plaque. Rusty only has 5 teeth, but doesn't like anything put in his mouth. Our vet gave us an oral rinse to use after Rusty's last dental and to help prevent future plaque, but it was impossible! Maybe Z. will be more cooperative.

Nice PMPS, Zener.

Enjoy the evening,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124;+1 224 vet dental gel?

Looks like the vetty BG spike + food spike at +1. Perhaps it will be an early to bed night?

Thanks to all who have replied to our query about the dental gel and toothbrushing ideas. We'll leave the question up for a bit longer and see if there are any other ideas or information this fantastic group of people can share! :YMHUG:

PMPS 124, 7th cycle@1.25u, 1PP, 1/8 zantac, 1mg ondansetron, 1.6oz 10%
+1 224, 8 drops kidney liquid, 1.0oz 10%
+1.5 0.45oz 10%

@Michelle & Mannie - thanks for the tip on 50/50 mix of peroxide and water. If we don't have success with the brushing, we may try that. I understand completely about biting off fingers rather than brushing, but then that's me.

@squeem - thanks for the gel contents info and the toothbrushing info. We have the CET poultry toothpaste and brush but have not tried them yet. It's good to know that your kitters have done okay. Watched the Cornell video several months ago, but not it's time to get serious about doing this. The CET foam thing and chew treats may be worth exploring!

@Deborah & Shasta - Zener's dental last Dec was a very difficult time and we would like to NOT have that experience again! He is doing so much better now and we have a lot more things sorted out, so paws crossed, we won't have those complications next time! Zener is almost always such a good boy, he's always been like that, no matter what trials and tribulations we put him through. cat_pet_icon

@Amy - thanks for the good tooth vines, we'll take all of them we can get! ;-)

@Sienne - thanks for the info on the gel contents. I'm with you, why do they put sugars in these products? We have the CET kitty sized toothbrush, we just need to give it a go with the big guy. :?

@Ella - wow, a dental rinse for cats? Was Rusty supposed to gargle and spit? Bless his 5 teeth and may he keep them forever!

Thanks everyone! Liz and I just need to get our big girl britches on and give this toothbrushing a go!

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124;+1 224 vet dental gel?

Hey girls!

When I took Grwcie to the vet dental specialist, he said that just getting even a qtip and wetting it and rubbing their teeth and gums with it would do as well as anything else. I also use the CET toothpaste....put it on a qtip and gently apply to teeth and gums. No biggie. My cats don't like the brushes..inc the finger brush.

I also put CET RINSE on Tobeys teeth and gums. He is prone to FORL. I just squirt a bit on a qtip and rub it on. It does not have sorbitol or dextrose...in fact, I can't tell that there are any sugars it. I do it nightly after his final helping.

Looking like a mellow yellow vetty spike. Early bedtime for night duty bean. I-)

@Marje - thanks for the information. Wow, how cool is that, that a vet dental specialist exists! We ordered the CET rinse from the link.

Thanks to everyone who replied for all the information. We have some of the CET toothpaste, now we just need to get serious about trying it out. I like the idea of a qTip too.

Sweet dreams LL.

Re: 9/18 Zener PMPS 124;+1 224;+3 231 vet dental gel?

I use Enzadent toothpaste and all my cats loved it. It has sorbitol and doesn't seem to affect Racci's bg. I find it helps whiten her teeth even if I just put it on my finger and rub. That's what I do when Racci doesn't want to cooperate. Usually she lets me brush though. The biggest problem in brushing her teeth is trying to keep her from eating the toothbrush so I can use it to brush with!

It must work because Racci has never needed a dental and neither did her mom.
