Hi Everyone! I haven't posted since Orange's OTJ party, but I've been lurking and keeping an eye on you guys.

Well, I have some not so great news. I've been getting some yellows from Orange. I know exactly what caused it though. DH and I were away for a week to visit family. The first half of the week Orange and Charlie were at a friends house and the last few days they were back at home and being checked on twice a day. Orange is a pretty chill cat but I'm sure it must have been pretty stressful for him to be somewhere strange without us around. I tested him right before we left (=97) and right when we got back on Sunday night (=238).

Since it was such an adventure for him, I wasn't too surprised to see a high number, but I was hoping he would bring himself back down now that we are home. Well, its been 2 days and he's been consistnely in yellow land. He looks normal, he's purring and playing and cuddly and happy - maybe eating just slightly more than normal would be the only thing that might be out of wack (and its slightly - it might just be in my imagination).

So.... do I give him more time to see what happens or do I start to help him along with a drop of insulin? His numbers aren't getting any worse, but they don't seem to be getting any better either :sad:

Next time I need to try harder to keep him here if I'm away.... or maybe I should just stay!
 
Are you absolutely certain that Orange was being fed ONLY low carb food -- no contraband treats, etc. Well meaning friends may not understand the effect of carbs on a diabetic cat.

If you are 100% sure that no HC passed his little kitty lips, then a trip to the vet is in your immediate future. You need to rule out any infection (e.g., a UTI) and make sure that Orange doesn't need a dental. If he gets a clean bill of health and his numbers are still outside of normal, then it's time to start insulin. I would get in to the vet ASAP. You don't want Orange sitting in these numbers and you certainly don't want to risk DKA developing.
 
My friends certainly knew that he wasn't allowed to have any food except for his own, but I can't be 100% certain that he never snuck some of Charlie's food or stole something else while I was gone.

I really don't think there's anything else going on with Orange other than the stress of the trip - but I'll take him in if you think it is called for.
 
If he did snag some of Charlie's food, I'd expect that it would have cleared his system. If he was eating Charlie's food routinely, it could have knocked Orange out of remission. (It's unlikely that your friends would keep as close a watch on Orange and Charlie at meal time as you do.)

The problem is that you don't know if something's going on medically. One advantage of getting spot checks with an OTJ kitty is that a rise in BG numbers is an early warning system for something being wrong. You could start insulin only to find out a week later that your cat has a raging UTI that your meter warned you about. If your vet is good about returning calls, you could call and talk to him/her and see if s/he thinks an office visit is warranted.
 
OK - we'll give the vet a call in the morning to see what she thinks. I'll try to get a ketone test tonight as well.

Hi Julie. Like Sienne mentioned, contraband food could be 1 possibility. Did you switch any of the varieties?
Tucker scared me the last couple of days with a number in the 220's and other high numbers in the 160's. I was giving him the tubs of Whiskas Pate. No carbs were listed in the ingredients. I switched back to strictly FF chicken and Turkey. His levels are almost back to normal.
