Yesterday at Tricia's House of Chaos
Hauled my sleepy butt out of bed at 0-dark-thirty this morning and dragged Cinco to UCD. Came home and went btb.
Thirty minutes later, the student on Cinco's case called me
. He said Cinco's heart murmur was louder than they'd heard it before and they had consulted a cardiologist because they did not want to repeatedly anesthetize him for his radiation without checking it out. He recommended an echocardiogram. I approved it and managed to get back to sleep. When I finally got up, I faced three indignant, hungry cats. Well, Minka was acting hungry, although she only ate a bite or two. Sasha was slightly better, and Harvey threw up a little bit as I was preparing breakfast.
I guess he felt better, though, because he had no trouble affirming his membership in CPC. Sasha was coaxed into eating about 90% of her food, but I couldn't even get Minka to eat baby food, so I gave her some more Ondansetron, some Cerenia and some Cypro. After a while she started nibbling and nibbled her way through the day, thus heading off the syringe.
They called and asked me to come in at three, and traffic was horrendous, so I was 20 minute late, but fortunately, they never mind that. The oncologist said the Cinco did really well with his anesthesia (he was still a little groggy when they brought him in). She said the echo showed some thickening of the walls of the heart, consistent with hypertrophic cardiomyopathy. This is apparently common in cats with Hyper T. The Cardiologist said that Cinco's heart was compensating well, the chamber sizes were normal, and he was an acceptable candidate for anesthesia. He recommends an echo once a year to monitor for changes, and wants his blood pressure checked every six months. Apparently it was slightly elevated, but not enough to treat when you take white coat hypertension into account.
The CT scan was mainly for mapping out where to target the radiation. They did find that there were some abnormalities in his nose. The oncologist said they had noticed them the last time, and they did not appear to have changed. She asked if he sneezes a lot or has nasal discharge. He sneezes sometime, but not a lot, and no nasal discharge. She said to keep track of that and let her know if it changes, as they will want to get a sample of the tissue to check for more cancer.
They monitored his BG and it was consistently around 260, so they did not give any insulin. I didn't have time to check it before we left this morning.
SO, He starts radiation therapy on Wednesday. I'm to give him his normal insulin dose and a good sized meal at 6 am, and then no food after that. I need to get him to UCD between 11 & 12 each day, they'll do the treatment at 2 and he should be home for PMPS at 6 pm. Lather, rinse, repeat, for the next 16 weekdays. Dr. C said that if I have trouble keeping him from dropping too low, we'll consider doing a half dose in the mornings. I can always rub karo on his gums if I need to. So we'll see how it goes.
I thought he would scarf his dinner down, since he hadn't eaten since midnight, but he ate it slowly, leaving about 1/4 of it for me to garnish with Forti Flora. Then he polished that off. Just as well. Didn't need a scarf and barf.
Minka ate about half her dinner right away, and after an hour I added some more food to freshen it. I just noticed that she is lying next to her empty plate.
I need to go check on Sasha and see if she's finished hers.
So that's the wrap up from THoC today. I hope everyone has had a good Friday.
Sending healing vines to all in need and hugs to all their beans, especially Marilyn & Polly, Deborah & Shasta, Carla & her civvie Baby, Wendy & civvie Theo, and Marje & Gracie.
Prayers continue for Amy's DF, Lyresa's DF and DH, Marje's DM, Chris' DM, Molly's DM, and Elise's DM.
