:shock: :o Not a pretty number to wake up to! Wait, let me start this again:
Good Morning LL!

Dry food was left out downstairs last night and there's still some there this morning. Muffin could have eaten some of that at any time to cause this number, but as I've been typing this she's eaten a whole lot of her breakfast already, so who knows? It was a bit of a shock to see. New insulin started this morning, but she pulled away from me as I shot it, so possible fur shot. ohmygod_smile I have a sinking feeling she gets wildly different size "drops" from shot to shot. I tried a flank shot yesterday and this morning, but she "yelps" during those - probably why she ran away this morning. Her fur is still looking poked out wrong, but not as bad as yesterday afternoon. I'm home all day to monitor.

Weather is overcast and breezy and looking like rain - maybe fall really IS coming. So far a frustrating day, and I've only been up for 45 mins! Curve planned for today due to new insulin - +1 coming in 30 mins.

This is not like you Muffin...yellows? well, guess it was a fur shot...
can you practice with water for the drop Anne...it does take awhile to get the hang of consistent drops..but that is the only way people have gotten comfortable with it is the practicing...
If her number continue to be high due to a fur shot, it might not be the best day to do a curve, right?

I'm thinking same thing on the curve Pat. I'll do a +3 and decide from that. I basically do a test draw almost every shot, since each syringe seems to line up slightly differently with the plungers and the lines, etc. So I draw what I think is a drop, then shoot it out under the magnifying glass to see if it's the amt I want, then draw what's hopefully the same amt again - I'm just never completely for sure for sure that it's the same amt I just got. It just seems that from one syringe to the next, what looks like should be a tiny drop sometimes is a much bigger drop - just makes me second guess myself. Unless Muffin gets some clear skin so I can see what's actually going into her, I'll probably always wonder. :lol: But I'm doing the best I can, so I guess that has to be good enough.

258 /2 +3 !! I'm shocked and appalled and thinking there must be more at work here than 1 fur shot this morning. She wasn't even this high during her OTJ trial.

Very unlike her - so with these numbers in combination with her looking out of sorts, I just called the vet and they want to see her to check for UTI and fpli or whatever that pancreatitis test is. Will probably do a full panel. Appt in 2 hrs - will test right before we leave just because I like to check vet stress - and she'll probably have to be there for a few hours as my cats never have full bladders when they go to the vet.

Good luck, Muffin! Her soul sister's going back to the vet for a sterile urine sample, too. She was empty the last time, but she's just going to have to get fluids. (Don't know why I'm the one that has to suggest this, but whatever.) Hopefully, they'll be UTI-free together...

Oh my, they really ARE soul sisters, aren't they? My vet always suggests leaving the cat there for fluids when they are empty, they've never made me bring a cat back. So when they suggested an appt time of 3:40, I asked if that would be enough time for her to stay if they couldn't get anything. So they gave me 1:40 :lol: I second the hope that they are both UTI free. Good luck Weeble!

Out the door to the vet check (+5) was 228. Don't have the heart to check her again. Vet says bladder infection, and was impressed with how early we caught it. Yay for testing and knowing our kitties! She got first dose of clavimox at the vet, and I'm to give her another one before I go to bed tonight, then tomorrow start making it 12 hrs apart. Vet says Muffin should be feeling better by tomorrow morning, and if her numbers are still out of whack tomorrow, to bring her back in for a blood panel and FPL. So gonna give her a break from poking til pmps.

Nice going Anne....you got her right there and she was dx ...now you can get to work with that nasty old infection. The BG testing is good for more than just FD because when the numbers go high like Muffin's there is a chance that it is signaling an infection.


Do you have Fortiflora at home? http://www.amazon.com/FortiFlora-FELINE ... B00164YL22 important probiotic to replenish the friendly bacteria that the ABS destroy along with the infection. Do you have some or are you familiar with it?
You should mix it in food at least 2 hours after administering the Clavamox....it will help the intestines. W/O it, other infections could arise and also there is a change of diarrhea with the ABs too...this usually helps.

Good luck to you and Muffin...she will be feeling so much better soon. You are a good Mama Anne! :mrgreen:

I gotta ask... How did the vet determine a bladder infection? Did he get a sterile sample (i.e., using a needle to draw out urine -- a cytocentesis)? Generally, you need a cytocentesis with a culture and sensitivity to determine what antibiotic to prescribe.

Aww, thank you Pat. Yes I have Fortiflora, and she does like it, and I did ask dr about it. She said I could give it a couple hrs after the ab or I could wait until the ab course was over and give it then. She claimed Clavimox is pretty mild and she has not experienced problems in the past, and I have given Clavimox many times to my cats without ever hearing of Fortiflora, but none of them were diabetic (at the time anyway). So yeah, I will give it 2 hrs after ab. Thanks for checking on us and thanks for the kind words.

Sienne - yes, she did a cystocentesis and just an in house test, whatever that entails...she said she could see some rod-shaped bacteria and that her white blood cell count was slightly elevated. I think only slightly elevated because we caught it so early. In the past, with Muffin and my other cats, when they get a UTI they are generally just given Clavimox and it's worked well every time except once. Kibby was throwing it up the last time he had it, so I was stopping and re-starting it and his infection didn't clear up so I went back and got something else (I forget what it was). But I will be here the rest of the day and all weekend to watch her. If her numbers aren't back down to near-normal tomorrow morning, I'll take her back in.

Nice catch! I hope Muffin is on the mend soon. Sounds like you have a good vet.

Thanks everyone for your kind words and well wishes. Fed snack at +8 of 1/8c kibble and 1 slice turkey and some fortiflora, and she gobbled that down too. Really not understanding the increased hunger unless she's trying to settle her stomach. She keeps wanting to go outside, which I'm not letting her do. Unusual for her to want out at this time of day, so I'm assuming she wants to eat grass and I don't want her to throw up her ab's.

Chicken soup?! I'd love to have some chicken soup! Thanks so much guys! - Muffin

Sienne - At this point I don't think so - she never mentioned a culture, and from my past experience with UTI's in my cats and at this vet, I don't think it's automatically done, but I could be wrong. I was only charged for the ab, a urinalysis, and a re-check exam ($19 instead of the usual exam fee of $49) I love my vet! :-D

That chicken soup worked wonders!! Thanks so much to the gang for stopping by! Muffin let them all in, and I went to the store so they could have some time together. When I got home, they stayed a bit longer and then left. I bought Muffin a cube at Walmart! Opened it up, put it on the floor, and she got right in it! Proof that she does read condos! She already knew all about it. Then she went downstairs and played with her catnip heart and is asking for dinner. So I decided to check her...and 116! It's miracle soup! Sorry Muffin, still another hour til dinner. Guess I gotta order nannas now too ;-)

Stu, Mannie, Moonie, Tess, and everyone else - thank you so so much for coming over! That soup was the bomb! I feel so much better already! Let's all go surfing tomorrow, k? - Muffin

pmps 145 higher than i expected but will be interesting to see what she does tonight and tomorrow. Will give ab's around +3-4 unless crazy things are happening and I can't go to bed. Will definitely get a +1 to see where she's heading.

Looks like she's surfing blue tonight. I sure can tell she's feeling better - she's a little devil tonight! The new scale came today - Muffin loves to sit on it. Tried to weigh Shnookie, but he refused to hold still as he wanted food. From what I can tell, and I'll check again in the morning, he's lost all of....drum roll please...2 OZ!! :roll: Guess I gotta work a little harder and be a little tougher ohmygod_smile I thought I was doing so well with him! :oops:
