Hello!

Yesterday's condo: viewtopic.php?f=9&t=125374

We just had our appointment with the allergy specialist. She was very nice and spent an hour with us. She thinks Billie definitely has allergies, and she thinks the cough is an asthmatic cough triggered by allergens, but she wants to find the allergens rather than just calling it asthma and treating the symptoms (as long as her cough doesn't get worse). She wants to start a 4 week food trial with a novel protein to see if that clears things up. She also tested for heartworm to rule that out as a possible cause of the cough, and I should have those results back tomorrow.

I can't use the Hound & Gatos lamb that I have been using, because it also has duck in it. My options are Hound & Gatos pork, Evo venison, or something home cooked. The vet is connecting me with a nutritionist at Cornell who can give me some recipes to try. With the home cooking, I worry about getting the balance of nutrients right. But, if my picky lady won't eat the H & G pork or Evo venison, that is our only option. As far as I know, there are no other novel protein options that are also low carb and have high quality ingredients. I scoured the pet store last week. Royal Canin makes a rabbit and pea formula, but pea is the first ingredient, followed by rabbit meal, coconut oil, pea protein and soy protein, which doesn't sound good to me.

If her allergies don't clear up after 4 weeks on this food, she'll try testing for environmental allergies, and I think allergy shots would be the next step. She said steroids are a total last resort unless her cough gets more frequent or more severe. She said she would start with an inhaler if we need to address the cough more urgently.

So, at least we have a plan, and we have an expert saying that it is in fact allergies. I asked if she sees skin issues + cough often, and she said she sometimes sees it in cats. That was reassuring.

I hope everyone is having a nice day! Vines to all the cats and beans needing vines.

Sounds like a good thorough visit with the allergist vetty. I hope you can find some food that Billie can eat. Have you looked at the Ziwipeak foods? They have venison and lamb canned wet, although they also have green lipped mussel in them. Both are 2%. Rachel/Chyna was feeding I think it was the lamb, for Chyna's many allergies. Another option is to see if Billie likes raw food, there are several single protein low carb options there. Good luck with the fuds hunt.

Nice blue today Billie!

Thank you Wendy!

Ziwipeak looks great, but we're supposed to avoid fish for now. I was looking up kangaroo options, but it sounds like there aren't many in the US. I'll look a little harder at the pet store today, and I'll at least get pork and venison to start with. Those are higher in phosphorus, which is a bummer, but I guess there is only so much I can worry about at once. I tried raw once with Billie - it was chicken, and she had no interest in it, but I could try a different protein.

I'm surprised and glad to see green today!

Mussels are shellfish, not really vertebrate fish. Might be worth asking the allergist what she thinks.

I did some research a while ago - and the only kangaroo I could find for sale in the US was in dry dog food. Other unique raw proteins I've seen include ostrich, elk, goat, quail, cornish game hen and pheasant. Unfortunately most rabbit seems to be higher in phosphorus.

Thank you for the suggestions! I already have a list of questions that I forgot to ask the vet today, so I'm going to call again tomorrow and will ask about Ziwipeak. I also want to ask about Nature's Variety Instinct. Instinct has pork, venison and rabbit options with no other protein (except pork liver which is novel for Billie), no egg, and no fish in them. It does have a lot of veggies - broccoli, blueberries, etc. - but I'm wondering if those extras are okay since it sounds like the allergens are usually a protein of some sort. I gave her the Instinct rabbit tonight. She gave it the staredown, but she ate a fair amount after I added some fortiflora. Such magic powder, that stuff.
