Spoke to vet this AM regarding the oncall vets recommendations about pain meds & antibiotics (posted this in yesterdays condo this morning before I made todays condo):
"I just spoke with Jupe's vet regarding the oncall vets recommendations about pain meds and antibiotics.

He would like to keep giving Jupiter the Bupe for 3 more days. (we are not going to pick any up since we have plenty here that Carla sent us and a little tiny bit left from what RG&Mali sent - thank you both!)

He is calling the oncall vet to get the report faxed to him to make sure they didnt see any indications of an infection. If there were any indications he will extend AB's. Otherwise he will not.

He said once Jupiter starts eating better he should have a bowel movement so dont worry about that for a few more days."

Last nights progress: Jupiter was in the crate yelping and I figured he was hungry or had to pee. Dane insisted he just wanted out. We got him out of the crate and put him in a litter box and he immediately got out of the LB. So Dane kept saying he just wanted attention but I really felt like something was up. Jupiter ended up walking back to the other LB again and going pee all on his own again. He would not let us help him walk to the litter box. He was too tired to walk back to the living room so Dane carried him back.

Yesterdays progress: Jupe walked back to litter box (it was awkard and he fell a bit but I know he will learn and keep improving!)
He went pee all by himself and held himself up in the litter box enough that no litter got on him!!!

Appy: Jupiter went 28 hours and would not eat anything! I tried everything!!! Finally today he ate about 2 tsp of meow mix wet cup of food. (2 teaspoon measuring spoons)

I am so proud of Jupiter and he is making good progress. However, after both times he walked to LB by himself... I could tell he was in a lot of pain. Last night after going to the LB he was in a lot of pain. He kept meowing so I ended up staying up all night with him to comfort him and ended up giving him his Bupe an hour earlier.

As always, I appreciate your vines, positive thoughts, and prayers so so much.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Jamie,

I don`t understand why they have such a problem giving him pain meds. My cat had nine teeth pulled at once and they gave me enough Buprenex for two weeks and would have given me more had I asked.
I sure do hope he starts eating more soon, I will say a little prayer for him to eat and feel better.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Terri, I think sometimes they need them to "realize" their pain - in order to not feel TOO good and hurt themselves more. I had a Maltese that had major back surgery and they gave him NO pain meds as they NEEDED him to know his limitations until he healed. If they have a false sense of well being, they often exacerbate the injury / surgical site and can cause more damage. I think it's all part of letting it heal slowly and well.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Jupiters vet would give us the Bupe, but there were generous members here who had sent us some. They originally only prescribed it for 3 days and gave us enough for 3 days. So I talked to Jupiters vet this morning and he said we can continue the Bupe for 3 more days (instead of switching him to another pain med). He would have given us it, but I told him I already have some here.

My main concern was, hes still in pain, and since the Bupe was only prescribed for 3 days, I did not want to continue it for long without asking his vet about it first. I wasnt sure if there was a pain medicine that would be better for Jupiter.

The oncall vet yesterday said that she thinks Jupiter is still in pain especially with all the swelling. She recommended we continue pain medicine for another week (wether it was this pain med or a different one) but I wanted to discuss it with Jupiters vet instead of taking a different kind of pain medicine from her to give Jupe.

If Jupiter is still in pain in 2-3 days from now... I will call his vet and let him know and I am sure he will prescribe something else or tell me to keep continuing the Bupe. He would not want Jupiter to be in pain either.

I was just letting everyone know that Jupiters vet recommended continuing with Bupe instead of switching to another pain medicine.

Thank you Terri for the prayers and thank you Bern for visiting

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Hi Jamie, I am happy that Jupiter has will to go to the LB. Sending appy vines to him. I am sorry he is still in pain. Heal up fast little buddy! You are going such a great job with him.
Give our love to Jupe!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

It sounds like Jupiter is making great progress being able to go to the lb by himself. He sounds like a stubborn kitty since he didn't want you to help him. That is good. It will help him get better. Sending prayers to you, Jupiter and Dane.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

OH NO!!!!! just found a flea on Jupiter! none of the cats have had fleas in like 2 years... and I havent treated them for fleas.... I am allergic to fleas and so is my civie Ieleiana

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Hi Jamie, such a great report on Jupe!! Sorry he's still in some pain  And OH NO on the Fleas!! :o
We use the stuff that goes in the carpet and it really works well and for a long time, plus Revolution. Fleas love Florida
Keep up the GREAT work Jamie and give Jupe some scritches for us. You Rock \M/

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Lyresa, I sent you extra ones that I was given.

I still have enough to treat my kitties.... just worried about the flea medicine and jupes incision?

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

all the flea meds i have are for larger cats..

im using the advantage. can i just use a little less on my civies? they are smaller then jupe.... by a lot

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

do not know if this helps but I buy the stuff for large dogs and then use an insulin syringe and draw up .3 and then .2 on another one. that is the dose for your cats. should be fine for all of them

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

Remember you put the flea med on the back of neck - so it should be anywhere near the surgery area.

Glad to hear that Jupiter is walking and using the LB on his own. Progress indeed. And as much as we all say continue with the pain meds, given the nature of the surgery, glad you discussed it with the vet so he can monitor the situation.

I think bupe is the safest pain med to use as tramadol for example could make him very agitated - it did that to Maui and metacam, well you know that has a black box warning for use in cats. So, if he can stay on the bupe great.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - talked to vet regarding pain / coupons

I did call the vet earlier to make sure it was okay to use the flea meds. I was concerned because even though the flea meds is put on back in between the shoulder blades, it absorbs into the skin. I wasnt sure if it being absorbed into the skin would impede the healing process at all. They did say it was okay to give him the flea meds though.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

As I mentioned earlier in my first post of this condo "Appy: Jupiter went 28 hours and would not eat anything! I tried everything!!! Finally today he ate about 2 tsp of meow mix wet cup of food. (2 teaspoon measuring spoons)"

He has not eaten anything since then. So in the past 38 hours he has only eaten about 2 & 1/2 teaspoons of food.

He did use the LB last night and go pee... but hasnt went since then.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

Hi Jamie,
I'm sorry to hear that Jupiter's in pain and not eating much.
But we are all so proud of him.
That he is going to the box by himself and making good progress.
And you are doing such a good job taking care of him. :YMHUG:

Sending lots of healing and eating vines to Jupiter.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

So glad to hear Jupiter is making all this progress .. Fingers crossed his appy kicks back up and he eats all his fuddies soon!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

It sounds like you're concerned he isn't eating enough, and so am I, Jamie. Please keep the vet informed about his daily intake of food. The last thing you want right now is him getting sick from not eating enough. He needs food to keep up his strength and to ward off any infection or other complications. Maybe something like kitten food or I think it's called "Max Cal"? Something that will put the most calories in his body per ounce.

I love that he is insisting on using the LB without your help or Dane's. He's proud and determined, that's for sure. That's a good sign. If the swelling gets worse, or the area feels hot, call the vet ASAP. Or if it feels like it's filling with fluids.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

Hi Jamie,
I agree with Carl. Perhaps try some all meat baby food (Beechnut Stage 1, turkey, chicken, or beef) and finger-feed it, if necessary. Also, add a little water to it. Your boy needs nourishment.

I hope that he will be feeling better and better by tomorrow. And I hope that you all will get some sleep tonight.

Many healing vines, hugs, scritches,

Ella & Rusty

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - not eating/drinking

He just ate 12 whiskas temptations treats (these are HC but his favorite and I figure this is better then nothing)
and he also ate 2-3 tsp of meow mix wet cup of food

We tried 2 different flavors of appetizers, 4 different flavor of canned food, and then tried the meow mix again... which is only thing he would eat earlier... I guess I got to try to get a few more of these

Carl, he is swollen and it does feel like its filled with fluid but the oncall vet said that is normal with this surgery.

I told Jupiters vet that he is not eating much and he said it may be from the Bupe.... I am thinking it might be the AB's as well. I am going to give him a probiotic tonight and keep giving him 1 a day from this point forward atleast for a few days after hes done with the AB's

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - ate a little bit

Jamie,

I'm happy to hear about all the progress Jupe's made! He IS one determined boy to be doing the LB on his own. I hope his appetite improves for you soon, and the swelling goes down. I always give pain meds, and would continue the Bupe, too, but I understand the concerns about letting him feel enough to understand his limitations. You're doing an amazing job, lots of prayers and support to you & Jupe.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - ate a little bit

Jamie & Dane-

You guys are doing great- I am glad that Jupe ate some more- remember pain causes a decrease in appetite - I have given bupe for 5 days straight 3 times per day per vet for 16 yr old at the time with dental and 6 extractions- I did put cooked chicken through food processor and added water- the only thing he would eat- that or very thin lunch meat- feed him what ever he will eat right now- even if it is high carb- do not bother to test his bg- recently otj- numbers will not be accurate with stress and pains meds.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - ate a little bit

OK, yes, swelling is normal. Just want to make sure it doesn't feel hot, which may indicate infection. Is any fluid leaking out?

Jamie, maybe I'm over-worrying, and I'm sure you're worried enough. My "concern" is "hepatic lipidosis" due to not eating.
The condition is triggered when a cat stops eating due to stress, another disease or for any other reason. After a few days without food, the cat’s body will begin to use fat for energy. Cats do not metabolize fat well; therefore the fat cells build up in the liver and eventually prevent it from functioning normally. FHL is very dangerous for cats and can be life threatening if left untreated.
Jupe hasn't been eating very well since the surgery. I understand the bupe and/or the ABs might be affecting his appetite. But he can't do without the ABs without risking infection, or the bupe without being in pain. So I think the "trick" is to find something that adds as many calories as possible without upsetting his tummy. It has to be a food that has lots of calories, but not too much from "fat". Your vet should be able to suggest something. Even if it comes to syringe feeding, but I'd love to find a solution that doesn't involve forcing him to eat. He's been through so much trauma in the past few weeks. I honestly can't say I'd have been able to handle everything that you have been dealing with. It's pretty awe-inspiring actually.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - ate a little bit

Jupiter is eating the Iams maximum calorie food right now!!!!! Going to call his vet tomorrow to see how we can get some of this (This can was given to us)... he really seems to like it!!!!

Was just talking to Dane about syringe feeding Jupiter. Maybe that threat worked!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

I didnt know if I should limit the amount he ate... so I just let him keep eating til he was full... he ate atleast 4tsp maybe a little more...he gobbled it up pretty quick! Gonna try giving him more in an hour or two. Im running on about 2 hours of sleep so I am really tired but I will try to wake up every hour to offer him food... but may end up just being able to do it every 2 hours.

I will see if there is a way to get some locally so I can give it to him tomorrow. Just need to know how much to give

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Jamie,
What's his current weight?
According to the Iams site, there's 333 calories in a 6 oz. can.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

God bless you for all that you are going through. I am sure it's been really hard (obvioulsy) for Jupe, but I can't imagine how hard this has been for you and Dane. Sending vines of support to you both. Hang in there, it HAS to get better soon.

Love and Puddy Nudges from Tiki to Jupe...

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Before the amputation he weighed 16.1lbs and now he weighs 15.1lbs I dont think hes lost any weight - I think that was all from the leg.

I hadnt thought of it that way until Dane mentioned it yesterday at oncall vet

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Okay, at fifteen pounds, at 15-20 calories per pound, per day, a can a day would be good if you can get him to eat that much. If not a whole can, then 3/4ths? Maybe just try to space it out over 5-6 mini-meals?

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

glad to hear he ate the Max cal! i think i'd let him eat as much as he will - he could use the calories. cheering you guys on!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Just to add my 2 cents, if you can get your hands on a tube of Nutrical that might not be a bad idea either. It's high in calories and loaded with vitamins and most kitties find it to be pretty tasty. Most vets carry that as well.

So glad Jupe is trying a little but I wouldn't worry too much about anything except getting some food into him. I mean real food, not Temptations, which it sounds like you are doing :) He has had major surgery ...I would expect that he would be in quite a bit of pain which is probably suppressing his appetite. It does mine when I'm in pain.

One day at a time.....YOU ARE DOING GREAT!

xo

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

I'm glad he's eating the Max Cal. That's a good choice of food to like, Jupiter cat_pet_icon .
Sending continued good appetite vines to your boy.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

jupiter ate some more max cal this morning and he also ate some FF beef. he also went pee this morning. he seems to be feeling a little better now that he got some food in him

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

GREAT NEWS Jamie! Just think ..... soon, all these little baby steps will add up to Jupe figuring out how to lead a new, normal life! I am so happy for you, Dane and Jupiter - hang in there, he may just amaze you soon! ENJOY this day!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Right on Jupe! So glad he finally started eating on his own. You guys are doing so great! Keep up the fantabulous efforts!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

I am so relieved and happy that Jupe is eating! Way to go Jupe!

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Hi Jamie. It's so good to read that Jupiter is eating and feeling a bit better. You & Dane are doing a great job with Jupe.

You, Dane & Jupe have a great evening.

Re: 9/16 Jupiter - just ate some max cal!!

Hey Jamie - I'm so happy to hear Jupe is hanging in there and now he's eating and peeing on his own! You are doing a great job taking care of him.

It is so late so I am going to do an update here in yesterdays condo and wait til the morning to start a new one.

We are still having a hard time getting Jupiter to eat. I may end up needing to try to syringe feed him. I think its the AB's..

I forgot to give him his AB last night and he ate last night and this morning and I didnt realize it until this morning when I looked back at notebook where I record what med I give and at what time. Totally thought I gave it to him, but didnt... counted the pills to be sure. So gave AB early this morning and after that he was not very interested in food. He has not been active at all today. Would not even walk back to the LB. Dane carried him back this morning and a few minutes later he used the LB and laid down and Dane carried him back out here.

Jupiter ate a few tsps of iams maximum calorie, a few whiskas temptations treats, and a few tsp of LC FF. Just took a lot of enticing and I still do not feel like he ate enough today.

I was not feeling well today... so bad that I could barely move. There was just no way I could take care of Jupiter today, so Dane had to miss work

Since Dane missed work on Friday, Monday morning, and all day today, he cant miss anymore work at all. This is going to be a rough week... Jupiter has been keeping me up most of the night and by the time he finally falls asleep... I cant fall asleep... Today would have been a good day for me to catch up on sleep but I was in so much pain I couldnt sleep. I will keep doing my absolute best to take care of him though. I know its going to be hard but I know we can get through these next few weeks. Just want my sweet baby boy Jupe to feel all better soon.

:?: If anyone is around that can give me some advice/tips on syringe feeding I would reallllyyy appreciate it. Thanks!
