Re: 9/15 loose lips - pics, videos, chatter, OTJ cats go her
Yeah, it's not a great pic but I couldn't find a better one. Basically you buy a single cabinet unit from someplace like Ikea and install the door, but not the back panel, so it is open in the back. Then attach a piece of wood or countertop on top that extends about 6-8" off the back. The back side goes against the wall so that the countertop butts up against the wall, but there is a gap between the wall and the open back of the cabinet because the countertop is deeper than the cabinet. You put the box inside and the cat enters the box through that gap. We would open the door side of it (which faces out into the room) to scoop the box. It's on casters so you can roll it away from the wall to sweep, clean, etc. It ended up costing a bit more than I wanted to spend because we decided to get a piece of laminate cut locally instead of using wood, but we don't have a mudroom or inside-access basement and got sick of looking at the litter box in our bathroom or guest room, so IMO it has been worth every penny. We are in the habit of scooping it every day, so hopefully that will help our chances of staying a one-litter box family...
I keep hearing about those woodstove pellets... I'll have to look into that. Thanks!
Regarding pets in dorms, I'm sure they are very beneficial to the students and I hate to say I have a problem with that, but I kind of do. I know everyone here is responsible and compassionate and would have taken great care of a pet in college, so I'm not talking about you guys at all... just the concept in general. I feel like a lot of college kids wouldn't do so well with the responsibility. Then again, a lot of grown adults in their 30s and 40s don't take great care of their pets either, so maybe it's not an age issue.
