9/15 Bella stroke? she's home!

I took Bella to the ER, I am in the waiting room, they took her and I am very worried. She was normal this morning, ate, then at +4 she vomited, twice, then went upstairs. After a few minutes she started limping, her back foot looks paralyzed. She was moving a lot, not comfortable and tried to crawl, she was panting and crying. I am very scared.

Sending you :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
That is a scary situation. I hope they'll figure things out for you and Bella.
My prayers are with you.

Oh no! Did you happen to notice if her back legs were cold? Was it just one leg/foot that was affected? I had a kitty who had a stroke (emobolism) that impacted both legs.

Sending all the healing I can your way. :bighug::bighug::bighug:. I'm glad she's at the ER now. Best place for her. They'll probably do an x-ray.

The vet just ca.e, he said her bg was way too low at 180. I told him that’s actually high for her. He said her leg looked painful and talked about an x-ray, but we were watching her the whole time at home and it’s unfortunately very doubful she broke it, unless it’s on a tumor or something like that.
They will do a glucose test on her foot to see if there is a difference. He thinks probably a clot in her leg but he can feel a pulse on her thigh. He said the prognosis was bad.

:bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
Thromboembolism (or saddle thrombos), which my kitty had, is a stroke/clot that affects both legs and worse prognosis. The clot is higher up, and not uncommon with heart kitties or those from certain breeds like Maine Coon. A clot in the leg itself is different. Keeping fingers, toes, paws crossed.

So they say distal clot, her heart is fine. They want to keep her hospitalized for pain meds and blood thinners and do a ct scan tomorrow to see why that happened. I don’t know what to do.
@Wendy&Neko what do you thik?

It is painful so yes on the pain meds. Blood thinners is how to treat the clot. Not sure why the CT scan ($$), unless they are looking for more clots elsewhere?

Some reading for you here. It includes lists of what are signs of good or not so good prognosis.

I am back home, she stayed there, they will keep her overnight for blood thinners and pain killers, and an ultrasound tomorrow to try and understand why she had a clot.
She was calm when I saw her, a little bit drugged but she licked my hand and purred. She tried to stand up but she was all wobbly and did not want her foot touched at all.
I will go back there whith my son after 8 pm so we can bring her her food and see her.
I uploaded my video on YouTube so I can share it here.
@Wendy&Neko thank you, that is very interesting. I guess in her case it is very distal but that does not mean she will not have another one. I hope the blood thinners work fast (not sure what she has, I guess heparin since it's intravenous for now). Her bg was very high, 220 when I left from what they told me.
The ultrasound is to look for an explanation, since her heart is fine, they want to look for a tumor, cancer or other.
Thanks to all of you for your thoughts and kind words, I did not feel alone while there and kept reading you. It might seem silly to be so worried for a cat, but I love her, as I am sure everybody here understands completely.

I find it not silly at all to be so worried for a cat. She is an important part of your family and you love her dearly. I hope you can rest tonight. Seems like she is in good hands and everything is done for her. I am glad she purred and licked your hand. She knows, she is not forgotten and she can count on you. All the best Cecile and thank you for the updates! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thanks for the update Cecile!
NOT SILLY AT ALL! Of course, you worry. I would too. We all would.
We all know how painful this is for you too. Wish I could do something to ease your pain and worry.

She was calm when I saw her, a little bit drugged but she licked my hand and purred.
Brought tears to my eyes. Sweet Bella.
I dearly hope that all will work out for Bella and you.
Sending extra prayers your way. :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Worst night ever for me was the night(s) I had to leave Neko in an oxygen tent at the ER. That was her heart. I totally get it. :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:

My thromoembolism kitty basically couldn't use his hind legs. Bella looks way better. I hope she eats for you. That's on the list for "good prognosis".

That's such a hard thing to watch an animal you love go through. You are very strong and the fact that she is purring and licking you means she loves you right back. So sorry. Will be thinking about you and Bella tonight.

We went to see her, I gave her her shot. Her bg went down a little, she was 140, from 220 earlier this afternoon. She was very sleepy and barely reacted when we arrived, but she woke up instantly when the food arrived and she ate. Everybody there is very nice, she will be watched and cared for. thank you again. I hope I will have good news tomorrow.

Sending positive energy your way.

I’ve had two cats who threw clots and had saddle thrombus, one after healing from a severe leg injury, another for reasons unknown but possibly heart related. Agreeing with Wendy that Bella looks much better than what we saw. Mine were screaming in pain and could not walk.

Bella walks with her back toe curled, which might be a clue. I hope they get it sorted out soon. Will be watching for updates. :bighug:

I’m glad she’s being well cared for and hope she improves rapidly. I know it will be difficult but try to get sleep tonight (and tomorrow if she’s not released) so you’ve got some reserve for when she comes home.

She was way worse when I took her in than when I took the video, by then she was crying in pain and crawling on the floor, but she could still move; she tried to walk, cried, then stopped and panted and was laying down. I was amazed that she could walk/crawl up the stairs and on my daughter's bed, but yes, she could move both legs, whoch is great.
The vet just called with good news: her toes are pinking up again, her foot is warmer, she walked better, using her leg to put weight on, she ate, and she looked a lot more comfortable. He said he was surprised by how much she improved since this afternoon.
he said that her blood looked OK, except for neutrophils whoch are elevated (due to pain, I guess), and one clotting factor which was not the way he was expecting, but I did not understand everything he was saying (English is not my first language and sometimes it's difficult to catch everything, especially on the phone!).
So I will try to get some sleep and stop worrying too much, she is strong. I am sure she feels all the love sent her way.

So sorry to read all of this! I will be praying for a quick and full recovery for Bella and strength, patience and encouragement for you.

I had a message this morning, she had a good night but her clotting factor is higher this morning than it was yesterday. They will call me soon but sent me a picture. She looks a little more awake than yesterday evening. She ate several times last night.

Thank you! The vet called, she will have an abdominal echo, and chest X-ray, today, and then a cardiology visit in the coming week. She said that if they do not find any horrible thing, she can come home tonight. I am hoping very very hard that she will be fine. She also said that Bella was very sweet.
Paws crossed for her coming home tonight! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Just coming in on this conversation and relieved to hear the better news following original post. I hope this good news continues. :bighug::bighug::bighug::cat::bighug::bighug::bighug: And, believe me, being worried for a cat is not at all silly. Not. We all know exactly how it feels to love a cat and be worried.

Oh (((Cecile))) I am just getting caught up. I am praying Bella will be fine and come home soon (today?)! It sounds like good news and that she is perkier has to be a good sign. Sending you all lots of love and support for you and your sweet Bella :bighug::bighug::kiss::bighug::kiss:

Dear Cecile,

I hope from all of my heart Bella comes home tonight. The first updates sound promising. So glad, she is better. And so glad you have been able to bring her to the ER so fast after the symptoms started. I am sure that was extremly helpful.

All paws and fingers still crossed for Bella! And a big hug for you! :bighug::bighug::bighug:

Thank you, Heike, and @Staci & Ivy .
Still no news since this morning, it's 3 pm now, hopefully I will hear from them soon.

Oh Cecile, I am just catching up reading this. I am so sorry Bella is going thru this but I am happy she is eating and feeling better and hopefully can come home. Sending you and Bella all the hugs and prayers I can as I know how hard this is. Thank you for keeping us all updated.

I got the best vet call possible. She said there was nothing abnormal on the chest XR, heart size is good, lungs are clear. The ultrasound shows only mildly thickened gut walls, no tumor, no signs of cancer, nothing that explains the clot. We're going to see a cardiologist for a cardia echo in the next week or so, but for now she is home.
The vet also said she improved more and faster than many cats she's seen with similar symptoms, whch was great to hear. She walks a little bit weirdly, but that might also be because of the painkillers, she looks very drugged. Not too sleepy, she went straight to her bowl and was complaining that it's empty.
She peed in the carrier on the way home and was soaked in it, I wiped her, hopefully the smell will go away. I don't want to give her a bath, she hates it and does not need the stress right now!
She is on Plavix, stopped the heparin for now but we'll see how she does, and Buprenorphin for pain.

Oh Thank goodness! I’ve been holding my breath checking your posts.
Sending you all gentle hugs of relief, Cecile. Please give Bella a nose kiss from me and Ivy. Hope you will all sleep better tonight :bighug::bighug::bighug::bighug:
