Good Morning Everyone,

Stu had a good night and has good numbers thus far this morning. Breakfast installments 1 and 2 have been eaten (4% Wellness Turkey). I suspect that he will start to drop now, so after the +2 test I gave him some 12% mixed in with the 4% for breakfast installment #3. Litterbox activity good. We've been outside in the cold and damp, but Mr. Cat didn't stay out for more than 15 minutes.
Tomorrow morning at 8 A.M. we go back to the vet to finally get the urine samples for the complete and "official" urinalysis. Stu will have cystocentesis and will be under gas anesthesia. Vet says no breakfast and to give him half of his insulin. I will insist that the samples be sent to Antech Diagnostics and that a urine culture also be done. Stu has been doing so well lately that I really hate to have to go back to the vet. I have a sinking feeling that he is not going to be a candidate for the I-131 and that we will be putting him through these invasive tests for nothing. But DH says that we've come this far and we should see it through and get the verdict from Hypurrcat. I just hope that our vet doesn't mess up the test again!! Can anyone tell me if antibiotics are routinely given after cystocentesis?

So, on that cheery note I'll be off to visit some condos! Everyone have a good day,

Ella & Stu

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171

ABs are not routinely given after cytocentesis. Even if you strongly suspect there's a UTI, it's more desirable to wait the few days for the culture and sensitivity (C & S) results so the AB prescribed targets the specific kind of bacteria. Why did your vet say that anesthesia is needed? Is Stu hard to handle at the vet? Usually this test can be performed without sedation unless a cat is particularly squirmy or aggressive.

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171

Thanks, Sienne. The culture is required by Hypurrcat to rule out the possibility of a urinary infection influencing the results of the urinalysis. We do not think that Stu has a UTI. I'm glad to know that antibiotics are not part of this procedure (I've been scared reading about the super-2-week antibiotic that Mannie got at the vet's yesterday). I gather that Stu is a real handful at the vet's and that is why they want to put him under light anesthesia.
Good luck with Gabby today!

Ella

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171

Nice amps for Stu, he's been doing GREAT lately, Ella! I hope the vet visit goes smoothly. I agree that you should complete the process, you have already done most of it. I would wait to see what Hypurrcat says, you may be pleasantly surprised. I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you guys!

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171

I am sorry that you have to repeat this process but it is necessary right? Keep hope that it will all work out well for Stu....
Can you say why you think he will not be a candidate for this procedure? Are there specific things that you are aware of Ella?
If they were to say no, then there would be a good reason I assume....I wholeheartedly agree with your DH that you should continue with the tests and wait to see what the verdict will be. The cystocentesis is done by most vets routinely to check for UTI so it's not that bad really...
Sending you good vetty vines for tomorrow for you and Stu....and lots of hugs too... :YMHUG: :YMHUG: :YMHUG:

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171, +4 133, +6 113

Hi again, Everyone,
Stu is having a nice, flat day surfing BLUE. He enjoyed Cowboy Cookout for lunch and is now napping on one of my backpacks. The weather is not very nice today, but if it stops drizzling I'll take him out again later, after I get back from the post office.
It's a low-energy day for sure.

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171, +4 133, +6 113

I agree that stu has been doing awesome lately, and I also agree with your DH that you should continue with these tests .. I will be hoping for a quick easy vet visit tomorrow!

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171, +4 133, +6 113

Stu is looking good again today. Best of luck on the test tomorrow, mainly that the vet does it right this time.

I too think you should go ahead, what makes you think Stu isn't a candidate? The FD or the CKD? From what I was reading at Hypurrcat's FAQ the CKD dx means extra care may be needed, but the treatment can also help some aspects of CKD. Don't give up. Stu is a fighter.

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171, +4 133, +6 113, +9 170

Those are some nice numbers for Stu today - good work! I hope all will go well tomorrow morning at the vet. Stu - don't get all stressed out, the tests are almost over!

Re: 9/14 Stu AMPS 170, +2 171, +4 133, +6 113, +9 170

Nice unstressful day for Stu! I hope everything goes well at the vet. And I hope you get some hands on training for giving fluids, too. I'm still thinking positive about Stu getting the I-131 treatment.

Re: 9/14 Stu PMPS 178

I'll keep sending "qualify for I-131 vines" for Stu. Sorry you have to go back to the vet yet again but hopefully they'll get it right this time.

Re: 9/14 Stu PMPS 178

i too am sorry that you, DH, and Stu have to go through all of the vet stuff again.. what a shame. I still hope that Stu will be a candidate - positive thoughts headed your way. Mannie and I will be thinking of you tomorrow.

Stu - DUDE! Thank you for coming and visiting me today - it was such a fun time. The chicken soup was so good, and I feel so awesome now. Wasn't it nice of Moonie to bring those tuna tartlets? YUM! Did you like surfing PNW waters? Our beaches are a little rocky, but we have great views - and hey - we get to surf with some really cool fish... See you tomorrow! Don't be scared at the vetty place - it will be ok. My paw is so much better than my bean says I can come and spend some time with you. OK? ~~ Mannie

Hi Everyone,
Thanks so much for your encouraging words. Since Stu has to have anesthesia tomorrow (because he is a struggler at the vet's), I can't feed him any more food tonight. This is a little worrisome, since he is lowish (99) at PMPS +4.5. I fed him some 12% along with some 3% EVO. I can't let him have any water, either. This is really worrisome. I'm going to leave his water out until 2 A.M. (+7.5) and then take it up. I hope that will be OK.
Keep fingers and paws crossed that all will go OK tomorrow and that Stu's vet will get the samples to Antech. He wanted to do the thyroid tests again, but I refused because he said that he couldn't do them until 4 hours after Stu had taken his Methimazole. That would have moved everything back to 10 A.M. (instead of 8 A.M.) and poor Stu would have had no food or water for ages. Also, if Stu does get accepted for the I-131 procedure, Hypurrcat would do all those tests as a matter of course. And if he doesn't get accepted, we can do them whenever.

I hate all of this!!!!!
See you tomorrow,

Ella & Stu

Good luck Ella!! I don't blame you for your frustrations one little bit. I would think that what you fed him would tide him over, through nadir. I hope all goes well tomorrow. Please keep us updated.

I'll be thinking of you guys and good luck tomorrow.

Stu, you are doing awesome today...try not going to low tonight...you can't have any gravy!!!
