Can't believe we are here - day 14 OTJ! The start of the Jewish New Year and a new start - insulin free - for the E Man! As usual, he started a little high but within range and has come back into the green (been busy all day so just got around to re-testing.) That seems to be the norm for him - he's like his mom .... plays by his own rules!

I can't thank everybody enough for all if the help, support, late nights and kicks in the butt that got us to this point. Thank you, thank you, thank you from Elian, his brothers, my daughters and me. Couldn't have done it without you. Dinner is at 7:30 - Copacabana has been playing all day to get us in that party mood!!!!

A (hopefully) final pmbg for Elian of ..... drumroll please ..... 69!!!! It's going to be so weird not getting up to test and shoot. Or to STAY up and test. I miss the all-nighters already. Okay - no I don't! Hafta go and read to see when and how often I test now - I believe once per week. It'll take a while to ween down to once per week, gotta be honest! Funny that when I tested tonight I had two strips in the container. And as I went to test Elian Justin bumped us and I got an error so I ended up using the last one. Talk about timing! Of course I have an unopened box ... or three ... waiting in the meow basket. :-)

Way to go, Elian! We are so happy for you, and Charlie is looking down from above cheering you on.
Get some rest and enjoy a few moments of peace and less testing. Lots of hard work, discipline, and love went into this and you made it. You are a good person for sticking through all the sleepless nights and being there for the little one.

Tips to stay OTJ

1. Never feed dry - not even treats. If you change wet food types, be 100% sure the new food is also low carb and same low carb % as your current food. Some cats are very carb sensitive and an increase from 3-6% to 8-10% can spike the BG’s. Don’t feed if you aren’t sure!
2. Weigh every 2 weeks to 1 month to watch for weight changes. Too much of a weight gain can cause loss of remission.
3. Measure blood once a week, indefinitely. You want to catch a relapse quickly. Some people only do checks every 2 weeks to a month.
4. No steroids or oral meds with sugar - remind your vet whenever giving you any medication. Always double check.
5. Monitor food intake, peeing and drinking. If increasing, a sign of losing remission.
6. Regular vet checks for infection such as dental , ear or UTI. And get them treated quick!

If he does fall out of remission you need to be more aggressive and resolve issues/ back on insulin as soon as possible as the window for a second remission is tight if any.
 
Thanks so much Hillary - I knew I saw that info before but didn't remember where! His food and everything else will be remaining the same. There will be no changes whatsoever - everybody is very happy. I will have to start weighing him and will make a point of getting him to our vet more frequently for check ups! Always appreciate your help and advice and for being here for us. Thank you!
