Hi Dara,

I'm Laura, Zekey's favorite bean ( "but don't tell my husband"). Well, Zeke and I have gotten a lot closer since this whole FD thing. Fortunately, at least for now, my employer has been very accommodating and I've had the privilege of spending a lot of quality time getting to know his BG habits (Right!) . We're just a little over 4 weeks into the process and it's been rough for me and my husband Glenn, but Zeke’s been a real little trouper. Oh well, guess that's what we get for enabling Zeke's dry food addiction – We owe him big time now. Funny, he doesn’t seem to miss the dry one iota. The freeze-dried salmon is soooo much better. Yum (gulp,gulp,gulp), Yum!

Thanks for the nice compliment on Mr. Zeke. I must say, Bob is a very handsome boy himself. Well without a doubt, you and I and all the other beans here on the FDMB are in very good hands. Hopefully you and Bob can find just the right combination of dose and food and are soon floating in Blues and surfing in Greens in no time. Hang in there and we will as well.

Well, not much of a spike. Will test again at +2. I feed him about 3 tsp LC with salmon at PMPS. I guess I'll see what happens at +2 and decide if more food is in order.

Thanks Marje. The when to and what to feed to keep him steady and safe is definitely something I'll need help with. Let's see what happens.

Thanks for your help yesterday. Sorry I was such a basket case before the shot. I was a little freaked out at the thought that his numbers were dropping. Tonight's +1 does get my attention. It usually spikes then. This AM he dropped a little over 100 from his high. Based on readings so far, can't have that tonight. So, yes, I'm a little nervous.

So Zeke's +2 reading is coming up in about 15 minutes. He just walked into the kitchen towards the food bowl. Should I keep him from eating for just a little bit? My thought is that I don't want him eating too early just in case I need him to eat later in the cycle. Is there a general guideline on this? We let him free feed so he has no usually feeding time except of course at shot time and just over 2 hours before (if we're here to direct).

Well I feed him just 1 tsp LC canned Wellness but he just went back to the bowl to finish his civvies' leftovers. I guess I'll let him.

Ok...so same drill as last night. As he's coming into green, we test, feed two tsp LC, retest in 30. Lather, rinse repeat. Sound good?

You can probably get a +3 unless you are worried he will drop alot more. I was just thinking that if he drops the same amount to +3, he would be at 64 and you might nailbite_smile nailbite_smile :-D

I'd prefer he doesn't eat MC yet but he should eat.

Please just let me know when you want to retest.

I'll do the +3 (30 minutes from now) and then immediately feed 2 tsp LC.

He's not hungry? did you get a +2.5? If he's not dropping much, then we can wait on the feeding sometimes depending on where his BG is.

Eta: just saw the 77. I'd just get him to eat when you can. I'd retest in 30.

If he drops more, you might switch to higher carb but smaller portions. But each number will determine what/when to feed.

You might want to rethink that body part.....if you give your right arm, you're going to have a tough time getting the next BG test number...

Getting ready to take the +3.5. He's actually hungry tonight. Already waiting in the kitchen. Maybe later it might be more difficult. I'll keep feeding.

In my experience, I've read lots of people say that when kitty's numbers are low, they are hungrier than normal. Like they "know" their BG is down and food will bring it up. Maybe it's like a human who can sense it's low so they'll grab a snack or a sweet drink to bump it up?

Wow. Zeke's in the kitchen wanting more food. Gosh I don't believe I've seen him eat this much so quickly any day this week. Maybe it just seems like he's eating more because I'm actually measuring and only feeding him 2 (level) tsp.

Well, I'm happy I'm not having to force him to eat. :smile:

Yes, that's my understanding of what Marje said. 2 tsp should hold him for an hour.

ETA- by hold him, I mean hold his numbers up rather than satisfy his appetite.

Yes. But...
If his number is higher, you may not need to feed. Or test again an hour later. It really is a "test by test" thing, but someone will be here for the 4.5.

In general though, if there was nobody to ask, or you couldn't get online, feeding 2 tsps at the next test, and then testing an hour later, would be a good plan. The only thing that might change that is if you were to see a much lower number at +4.5. Then, either the carbs might need to be higher, or you could stick with one tsp of LC and test again in 30 minutes, for example.

Carl is correct.

The point of this whole exercise is for you to see how he reacts and responds to food as numbers come down. It's just a starting point. You will have to learn how he responds and then adjust the foods accordingly.

I know if Gracie is dropping fast, I'm going to give her 10%. When she slows down, I'll give he 5% if she's low and I need to bring her up a bit, or 4% if I want her to surf.

Well because of the 67 I went ahead and gave him 2 tsps along with a little salmon. Do you think waiting until +5.5 is ok?

Yes, I think so. 77, 70, and 67 would be considered a nice flat surf, so the food is keeping him in that range without raising the numbers. That might be stressful, but it's a good thing for Zeke to hang out in the 70ish range.

Watched "The Right Stuff"...such an awesome movie I've probably seen 20 times (Mike is retired F-16 pilot so it's a fav movie) and "Best Exotic Marigold Hotel"....another amazing movie!

Well, Zeke might be done for tonight. Last two ear pricks I had difficulty getting enough blood and had to do several times. Zeke let me know he's had enough of that business. I did give him a little salmon to calm him down - he had attacked my feet!

Do you think I should get one more reading tonight, JIC?

You know I've never actually seen the Right Stuff in it's entirety from start to finish. I really should especially being that I live here in Houston. I agree with the Marigold Hotel. I thought it was very good as well. Judy Dench (spelling?) always seems to pick quality films.

Oh yes...you must see The Right Stuff all the way through. It's a classic like Gone With the Wind.

OK, so +5 = 90? Looks like the food kicked in.
If you want to get another reading, I'd go with a +6. Not sure if you should do that with or without more food? Marje?

If not, you could probably feed him now and leave out a bedtime snack?
