Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

He is laying down resting at the moment. He keeps wanting to try to get up and walk but he falls over and he howls and meows. I think hes confused, upset, and probably hurting. He was in the crate with the door open but couldnt relax in there.... so he is on the floor laying now and much more relaxed. Dane and I are going to take turns sitting with him. I think Dane is going to miss work today to stay home to help... It looks a lot different then I expected. I think his vet had something else in mind but the vet who did the surgery did it differently then it was described to us. I will try to take some pictures later. He did eat a few treats (they are HC - temptations though) and he ate a few bites of a FF appetizer.

His follow up is on Wednesday the 25th at 7pm with his regular vet to get the staples removed.

They said the biopsy should be done within a week and they will send the results to his oncologist right away.

They also said his kidney value was a little elevated. They said they will want to check this in 1 month to make sure its not worsening.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

So glad to see Jupe is home where he should be! It must feel awfully strange not to have that leg. He'll get used to it - hopefully soon. Extra hugs and scritches from me and Bu!

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

I'm so glad he's home where you can be together and watch him. Dane is a great guy to stay home and help you. Prayers that Jupe will eat well soon and adjust. It's going to take time.....

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Falling over and being confused is to be expected. the meowng is like "huh? why am i falling over?" Its also good that he is eating and is acting relaxed.

It might be an idea to start a journal to track his progress. ie today fell over a lot and meowed. Day to day its hard to see progress but with a journal you can see longer term improvements.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Great report! It will take him time to get used to it, but Jupiter is a survivor and will take it in "stride"! Paws crossed for the biopsy! :YMSIGH: More waiting.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

he will be relaxed for a few mins laying there then suddenly try to get up and he will start howling and acting very upset. I told him hes okay and he will learn. One of his front paws is swollen so I am sure thats making him even more unsteady. He will have to go in the crate at night but for now we are going to leave him on the floor since hes more relaxed there and keep a constant eye on him.

thank you all so much

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Jamie, I had a little Maltese that had to have major back/spine surgery about 15 years ago. It helped extend his like 4-5 years as he would have become paralyzed. It was the hardest thing when we brought him home - we had him in a confined area (a large box) and they didn't give ANY pain meds because they said he needed to "realize his pain" this way he would sort of limit himself. I am sure some of this will apply to Jupiter, he needs just to go slow and learn as he goes. The swollen front paw may be due to an IV. Try not to watch him BLINK and let him get the rest he needs to heal. Again, I KNOW this is easier said than done because I am a "professional fretter" but try to rest so you can stay strong! SO happy he is home with you!

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Yea!!!!! Jupe's home!!!!! Congratulations!!!!! Jupe's going to need some time to adjust to his new 'obstruction' - & he may still be experiencing some latent effects of the anesthesia & surgery drugs still wearing off, too, as well as pain meds - that's alot to be dealing with all at once! But - at least he's home in his normal surroundings with his beans & buddies - that's a big comfort!!!! Keep updating when you can, sending healing / recovery / support vines!!! & lots of :YMHUG:

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Yay!! Way to go Jupe! You are the man flip_cat

Good job, Jamie. Try to get some rest so you can keep up with that boy. I had a lithotripsy a couple of weeks ago to break up a kidney stone, but even in pieces, it was still no fun to pass so I sympathize with you passing one....they are no fun!

Healing and resting vines to you and Jupe!

I'm so glad Jupiter is home.

It will take time for him to relearn everything. Just take time to explain things to him. Sending prayers and hugs to you.

Don't watch him to hard MOL give him head bonks for us

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

yea , Jupe is home!!
swollen paw more than likely from IV. will go down
please keep him medicated with pain meds. he will need them for awhile. best zonked and sleeping than a little out of it and trying to get around. rest is the most important right now.

hang in there. hugs to you guys and scritches to ol Jupe

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Hi Jamie. What wonderful news.....so glad he is home with you and Dane. It will take him a while to adjust but he'll get there.

Have a great day.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Great news!!

For tonight, can you make a tape of you and Dane talking? The sound of your voice may help Jupe to stay relaxed while in the crate. I'd also make sure you have something in there that smells of you and/or of Jupe.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

:RAHCAT YAY! So glad he's home! Hope he gets the picture and starts lying still for a while. Precious little guy - praying he handles all this well. I've always heard animals get used to things like that really fast.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

hes doing good so far he is resting. he is a lot more relaxed now. every once in a while he will start trying to move around (not walking just like kinda kicking and pushing while lying on his side and he will meow) and i pet him and tell him "its okay buddy i am right here, you need rest" and then he goes back to sleep

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

Jamie,
I am glad that Jupiter is home and doing well. Did the vet give instructions about cage confinement or otherwise limiting mobility? What about wearing an e-collar? I think the best time to get him used to being in the crate is now, when he is more sedated, and feeling less like moving. I hope the vet prescribed some medication for pain. It's still important to keep his pain under control. I am so glad to hear that he is sleeping and eating a little.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

He took a few bites of food when he first got home but since then hes not interested in any food. At night he is to be kept in a crate or small room. We have already decided the crate is going to be a lot easier for this. He is to wear the cone and be kept confined to a small room or crate when he will be unsupervised.

They gave him Oral Bupe - .3ml - 2 or 3 times daily. They said pain meds is for 3 days. They said after the 3 days he should only have mild pain. (Last time they gave him .5ml twice daily but I explained he seemed to do better with .3ml but it did wear off quicker so they said we can do .3ml three times a day)

We gave .3ml Bupe @ 3:15pm today. Wasnt sure what time to give it because they did give him a dose sometime this morning. He seemed like he was in pain (he was yelping and meowing) and about 45 mins after that dose he seemed a lot more relaxed and has been sleeping since.

He is also to be given a dose of gabapentin this evening. We will be giving that at 7pm. They said today will be last day he gets the gabapentin. They mixed it with something and put it into a syringe (the kind without the needle). I cant remember what they mixed with it.... looks brown.... I asked her if it will raise his BG and she said the small amount of it shouldnt.

He was also prescribed Clavamox (antibiotic) and its to be given twice daily. They had already given him a dose of it before we arrived there this morning.

We had him in the crate when we first got home but he still seemed kind of "loopy" and he wanted out and just wouldnt rest in there. Next time he gets up or tries to walk I will try to help guide him to the carrier. I am afraid to pick him up because I dont want to hurt him. His regular vet explained the procedure and said there was going to be a smaller incision... but the vet that did the surgery did it differently and bigger incision then Dane & I expected.

To make his meds easier for me to remember to give them on time we are going to do a schedule something like this I think:
Bupe - 3pm, 11pm, 7am
AB's - 11am, 11pm
Prozac - 11am

actually after typing that up I am not sure I want to do that schedule anymore. I dont think I want to give AB's and Bupe at same time. I dont mind giving prozac and Ab's at same time though. Maybe I will alter those times a bit.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!!

I am really not sure how he is going to use the litter box? He cant stand up on his own yet he pretty much just falls right over. Earlier when he was trying to walk around I felt really bad for him because he kept falling and he was acting so scared and so upset. After we first got home he did move himself a bit and I was trying to help hold him because he kept falling over but he was just acting so upset... When he did move around earlier... he like hopped backwards....he didnt go forwards at all just backwards... but he didnt try walking too much - hes been sleeping and resting most of the day

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!! update

Jamie, can't you make a sort of "sling" to use to pick him up and move him - just like a folded pillow case to slip under him and "hoist" him? Just trying to think of things that may make this easier?

Bern

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!! update

Jamie: I agree with Linda. I think it is important to keep him confined to the crate for a few day, give him a chance to adjust and not move too much. I'm sure it is uncomfortable for you but I think it is best for Jupiter. Nice that he is eating a little.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!! update

First of all, welcome home Jupiter! I love that you could comfort him back to sleep, Jamie. Everything will be fine with you and Dane taking such good care of him and him being in a familiar place. Things might take some getting used to but I'm sure they'll get there.

What about pee pads instead of a litter box? You could just lay it under Jupiter and if he goes then it's easier to clean up. Then you don't have to worry about him having accidents on carpet or anything. Plus, you don't always have to worry about when he might have to go as he'll always be "ready." As he recovers I'm sure he'll find a way to get to and use the box that works for him.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!! update

Perhaps some pee pads to rest on, so if he can't get to the box, he isn't lying in it.

The sling is a good idea, if he'll cooperate.

Re: 9/13 JUPITER IS HOME!!!!! update

Pee pads sprinkled with a little kitty litter so it smells right? For now though you might need to help him in and be prepared for accidents. Maybe there is a disabled cats forum on the web or Facebook you could post in that could advise?

Wendy

Everybody ready for some pictures?

I told Jamie I'd be more than happy to post them and I just got home from work, so here they are!

When he did move around earlier... he like hopped backwards....he didnt go forwards at all just backwards...

This sort of makes sense to me. If you think about it, a kitty can balance on his two back legs and stand up that way, but you rarely see them do that the opposite way, like a handstand. So at this point, until he learns how, he can't figure out how to balance on just one back leg, and when he moves his front legs to walk, he's falling over. But if he were to do things backwards, lift just the back leg, he'd still be able to balance well on just his front legs, and not feel like he's going to fall over?

Oh, Jamie, my Maltese, Doogle, looked just like this- trust me, it will heal. It is a hard thing to go through but know that he feeds off you. Don't be horrified at what you see, the fur will grow, Jupe will learn, and this will all become the past. These are hard days ahead but it will slowly get better - I promise!
Kisses to Jupe! And sleepy vibes to you!

Bern

What a cute haircut! It will take time to grow back, but it will be so soft and silky as it grows again.

Looks like he is loving some chin scritchies.

He does look very relaxed - what a sweet face! Fortunately, time passes very quickly, and before you know it, he'll be all healed up and running around as if nothing ever happened.

Jupiter definitely looks relaxed and happy to be home. It will take a while for him to get used to three legs. But before you know it you'll be thinking look at what all he is doing now.

((Jamie)), I'm so glad the surgery is done and over with.
Jupe looks quite good considering what he's been through. What a love.
Sending tons of healing vines :YMHUG:
