9/12, Corduroy, AMPS 266, +2=271, SHOOT AGAIN??

Hi all,

I gave (or hope I gave) Corduroy .25 units again today. He was squirming A LOT due to the fact that his dad was in the kitchen preparing their food (bad idea on my part). It's always extremely difficult for me to tell if I'm indeed getting anything in him because .25 is such a small amount. I do a couple of test shoots onto a piece of paper beforehand usually, but I'm always questioning.

Speaking of questions ;-) : Corduroy has been extremely lazy lately and sleeping a lot more than usual since his BG levels have gone down a little. Is this normal or should I be alarmed?

Other than that, he cleans himself a lot (when he's not sleeping), he eats well, he's peeing and pooping like normal (which means sometimes pooping in the corner of our living room unfortunately;))

It can take a kitty a little while to get used to lower BG numbers, so yes, that could be why he's feeling a little snoozier than usual. It's always a good idea to monitor new and different behaviors, though.

I know what you mean about trying to test or shoot while fuds is being prepped in the other room. We can't do that here...Trix is all over the place if she hears the clinking of spoons against her food bowl!

I just checked Corduroy's BG levels at 10:29 and they have gone up, from 266 to 271. So, I'm now wondering if I should give him another .25 units?? Maybe I was right about not getting it into him this morning? I DID feed him right after the shot though. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

No, do NOT shoot again. Even if you are 98% sure that you missed a shot, you don't want to redo it since you have no way of knowing whether it went in or how much went in, and you could end up giving him way too much.

Because meters can vary a little (except for very low numbers, where they are more precise) 266 and 271 are really the same number. It's not unusual for a +2 to be around the same as the preshot as the Lantus is just starting to kick in.
 
No - you never ever want to shoot a second time! This is where what we call "Patience Pants" come in to play. You HAVE to wait 12 hours for his next shot. And, that 271 at +2 could very well be a food spike....the insulin you did shoot is probably just starting to kick in. Plus, that 271 is barely a rise from his AMPS...it falls within the 20% meter variance. There's a good chance your next test will show a lower number.

BTW, same goes for a furshot...if you think, or even if you KNOW, you did a furshot, never reshoot. You don't know how much juice actually did go in, and you don't want to end up with an overdosed kitty who could go hypo.

Hang in there....FD definitely requires lots of waiting and patience.
 
You give insulin only 2x/day.. Once in the morning, and again 12 hours later. If you think you've shot a fur shot, then it's best to not give anything until the next PS time 12 hours later. You don't know how much actually went into him this morning. Simply chalk it up to being a fur shot, and try for a better shot the next time, and be sure to type in your SS "fur shot" so that others can see what's been going on.

If you're concerned with the amount of insulin, please put something like "Dose Question" in your subject line, and someone will be by to advise you on your next dose amount.

Hang in there. This takes a lot of patience, and time.

Thanks for seeing this and replying so soon. I really appreciate the input. Yes, that makes sense that maybe the meter is a little inaccurate. These are things I can't remember unless someone points it out. Okay, I won t shoot again.

Just wait until the next shot time to give him his dose, and in the meantime you can continue monitoring him like you have been. Hang in there. His #s will improve over time, and you'll get the hang of this. You both will. :YMHUG:

Remember to update Corduroy's spread sheet with his information from this morning. I went to look to see how he's doing, and it's not there for 9/12, but only from yesterday. You're doing an awesome job! :-D
 
Both Amys gave you great information. Never, ever shoot twice. You risk overdosing your cat.

It's not a matter of the meter being inaccurate. There is always some degree of variability in any measurement you take. (It's technically termed, "standard error of measurement.") It may be due to the instrument itself, human error, etc. If you were to repeatedly take a measurement of your weight, for example, every time you step on the scale, you may get a slight difference. It doesn't mean that the scale is inaccurate or that your weight changes from one minute to the next. It's the nature of taking a measurement. With meters, there can be a 20% allowable variance. The 5 point difference between your AMPS and +2 is negligible.

Tomcat is the same way....I figured that once his levels were better/lower he would be very active...in fact, when I first saw his 49 value I couldn't believe he wasn't running around like a new kitten.......but nope. snooze in snooze out...regardless of the number! darn it.

glad to read that is normal from Amy, because I wasn't sure either. thanks for asking

as far as the mysterious fur-shot: can you smell it on his back? Lantus has an awful smell that lasts forever on their coats that you can usually smell when given a dreaded :evil: fur-shot. obviously, as everyone has said...you do not re-give a shot regardless it you can smell insulin or not....you just never know...most of it may have entered and just a drop got on the coat

On the way he's feeling, remember how he felt at first when his numbers were high? Probably not good. But then he got used to it and alot of times we hear that the kitty seems to feel better at high numbers than low numbers. But once they start getting into normal numbers regularly, they'll start feeling good there and probably being quieter and more lethargic if numbers bounce up.

I finally updated Corduroy's SS for today. I'm sorry that it took so long. I was busy this morning before I went to work. I will make sure to update it every morning from now on. To everyone with the advice on not to shoot again, thank you. What you say makes a lot of sense. And to those of you responding with their kitties' experiences on being lazy and sleeping a lot, I appreciate the input. I was thinking that it might be his body not being used to the low numbers, but I wasn't sure.

I do have one question for tonight: I do his PMPS, then I shoot, and then I give him food. After that, I wait for two hours and do his +2. Is this okay? Or am I supposed to wait to give him food until after the +2? He's gonna be really angry with me if the answer is to wait ;-)

Hi and welcome!

Most of us do the PS test, feed, and shoot all within 15 minutes. Some like to shoot while their cat is eating (he is preoccupied). You want to make sure that food is on board when you are giving insulin, otherwise you risk having a steep drop in blood glucose. So, the answer to your question is: Definitely DO NOT wait until +2 to feed!!!
