Many of you have said the starting dose was too low but no one has yet to specify what an ideal dose may have been. I shot 3 this AM. I realize this is still early days for glargine and the depo has to fill and patience is called for but I feel like I am running out of time. Bama is a long hauler when it comes to diabetes— 7 years long on Novolin N. If you would have started your kitty on something higher, what would the dose have been? 4?

I haven’t been able to catch a urine sample in over 24 hours. He ate well this morning but ate little of his +5 snack which I held over to get a BG reading. He is drinking, or I should say, moving his water bowls around, sloshing it out to the point where I don’t know how much he is consuming and how much is being spilled.

Thanks.

Usually when switching from Novolin you start with a dose a little lower than the Novolin. @Wendy&Neko What do you think? I think I would consider going up to at least 4.5 but not my area of expertise. Don’t take this to mean that would be the right thing to do please.

I agree with Elise, I think you could easily do 4.5 units, maybe 5. He needs to get out of these high numbers.

Thanks @tiffmaxee

Bama was dx’d by a country vet who sold me the Hill’s for weight management (dry); started Novolin @ 4u 2x daily and told me to bring him back in a week. When I did he upped it to 5; back in a week, he upped it to 6. Back in a week, bg aroud 60, declared him regulated. Bring back monthly for BG checks. No curves. No recommendations for home testing. Some discussion of hypo, none about DKA. Used that vet for another 2 years until I moved away. No hypos. Excess drinking and peeing stopped. Eventually dosage stepped down to 3. So yeah, Bama and I have flown close to the sun. We just didn’t know how close.
