9/10 Regulating Bill's Dose

We're back from our vacation, and the pet sitter did awesome! Bill's numbers were a little high, but we were OK with that, and once we got home, they've come back down.

1U twice a day is proving to be too much (yay), so I think I want to try .5U twice a day for a few days. Though, I tested him at +4 yesterday, and got a 48. His low is happening between +4 and +5, and like Marje mentioned in my last thread, I need to get more night numbers. Will do tonight and this week.

I'm so happy I didn't follow my vet's advice on just giving 1U twice a day and not doing any home testing! He would have hypo'd so many times!!!

You are taking very good care of Bill, Ravyn. Thank goodness you are testing, reading the SS and learning about dosing changes. Hooray for you and Bill. Hope your vaca was great.

Maybe I’m missing something but it looks like he’s been on 0.5u several days (petsitter) and got the 48 while on 0.5u. That means you’ll want to take the dose to 0.25u tonight.

He was bouncing today and clearing the bounce. A bounce occurs when there’s either a quick drop in the BG or lower numbers. Bounces occur because the liver detects that what has been “normal” (higher BGs) has suddenly changed. In order to protect the body, the liver and pancreas release counterregulatory hormones to bring the BG back up to what it sees as “normal” now (higher numbers). When those hormones clear out, like today, the numbers drop. Bounce cycles can be very, very active and need more monitoring or else you will continue to have bounce/dive cycles.

We strongly urge members here on lantus to try and get a +2 test every cycle that they can. If the +2 is the same or a little less than the preshot (PS), you can expect an active cycle. If it’s alot less than the PS, you can expect a very, very active cycle and should be prepared. These are the types of cycles we often see with bounce clearing. When clearing a bounce, if the numbers drop fast (they don’t even have to drop that low), it can cause another bounce to start.

If you haven’t had a chance to read the stickys yet, I’d suggest you read as much as you can. This post on Making the Most of your ISG Experience here will help you learn the ropes.

You can see from the main list on this forum how we annotate the subject lines:

Date, Cat’s Name, Test/BG

Several of us scroll through the list looking at the numbers to be sure a member hasn’t missed something or if a member needs help.

Thanks so much and let us know your questions.
