Re: 9/10 Mr.Cat AMPS 119 +3 112 +10 106 PMPS 143

Thanks! I changed his dose to .75 tonight instead of .5. He just wasn't staying down where we like to see him.

Re: 9/10 Mr.Cat AMPS 119 +3 112 +10 106 PMPS 143

Update: I just realized that the probiotics I was giving Mr.Cat to help maintain healthy gut flora has fructooligosaccharides in it (basically, it's a sugar). That would explain why today, at his +10, I gave him some raw meat and probiotics. Two hours later, his BG went from 106 to 143! I thought maybe his pancreas wasn't working but lo and behold, the probiotics have sugar in them!
Some studies in humans show that fructooligosaccharides don't raise blood sugar in humans with diabetes. Then again, humans are designed to eat quite a few carbs each day, whereas cats.... well, they aren't exactly carb-o-centric! :-D Anyway, I'll take him off the probiotics and see if his stools (and BG) get better on their own. Now that he's off antibiotics, everything should go back to normal, I hope!
In the meantime, I'll keep testing him tonight to make sure his BG doesn't get too low. Geez... I feel a little dumb for raising his dose tonight! I just couldn't figure out why his BG was so high!

Probiotics that some people here use are Pearls, or Renew Ultimate. I use Pet Dophilus but some cats have increased BG's from it. It seems fine for Neko.

What type of raw meat did you give at +10? Neko is on a raw meat diet, but some of the food has carbs in it, up to 5%. It's best to limit the amount of food given after nadir. The insulin action is waning then and any carbs will slam the breaks on it. Neko gets a small snack at +9, but I try to do mostly no carb or at most 1%.

Thanks, Wendy. I will keep in mind to hold off on food after the nadir. Mr.Cat ate just plain, raw ground turkey (dark meat) with no additives. I give it to him as a snack/treat after his ear poke test (about a tablespoon of meat) but he's not on a raw meat diet exclusively. I don't think raw turkey has any carbs, does it?
Thanks also for the probiotic recommendations. I will try them! :-D

There are a few carbs in some of the organs of an animal. Plain breast or thigh should be pretty low carb if any.

Good luck on the dental, sounds like you found a much better vet for the procedure.

I would guess that most people here use FortiFlora (which is developed for cats -- there's one for dogs, too) as a probiotic. ReNew Ultimate is a very powerful probiotic that I've used when Gabby was going through a lengthy bout of diarrhea and GI issues. My vet has also suggested Pearls since they are tiny and easy to pill.

I actually doubt that the rise in numbers was due to the probiotic. I suspect that giving a snack that late in the cycle was more the reason. I would expect to see numbers rising by +10 through pre-shot.
