Unfortunately Jupiter is already absolutely terrified of the crate. At first he was not afraid of it... but when I put the blankets it... I bumped the door... and the sound of that scared him and he ran and hid. I was really trying not bump the doors because I knew this would happen... With his carrier (plastic carrier with the metal door) we used to take the lid and door off and put the lid inside the base.... and the door in there... and we would carry it out this way so Jupiter didnt know it was the carrier... otherwise he ran and hid... he always did good this way unless he heard the metal door of it... then he was scared. I knew the noise of that would scare him and was really hoping he would get comfortable with the crate but now he doesnt want to go near it.

"Going to focus on planning instead of worrying, can you all please help me with this?
Instead of focusing on all the unknowns and my worries regarding Jupiters amputation surgery I want to focus on planning and getting ready for his surgery. So each day I am going to pick one of the questions listed below and in that days condo, I would love any input and ideas regarding that days question. I really think this will help me get through each day until his surgery. If you could all help me focus my attention at the question at hand, I would really appreciate it. This way I will spend less time worrying and more time planning. I know this probably seems really silly, but I think it will be a good way to focus my energy on anything but constantly worrying.

These are not in order but I will pick one question a day to focus on and would love any input and ideas. Please only give ideas for that 1 question so I will have a question to focus on each day. :-D

1. Questions to ask the vet before and after surgery? Questions to ask the oncologist?
2. How to distract Jupiter the night before surgery? I know he is going to be miserable not being able to eat after 6pm and will be on the search for food.
3. Any ideas on how to make Jupiter more comfortable after surgery? Things I can do to spoil him even more & make him happy?
4. Any ideas of what I can do for the 24 hour period that Jupiter is at the vet for? I want to keep myself distracted as possible as I know I am going to be worried out of my mind that day.
5. A list of items to take to the vet with us & a list of items to have here and ready for when Jupiter comes home?
(and if you guys have any other ideas for topics that you think could be something for me to think about and plan - please feel free to let me know :-D )"

(If you have any input regarding any questions from a previous day which are the questions that are crossed out please feel free to add your advice or suggestions for those questions- but please dont answer the questions that are not crossed out and that are not todays, so I have a question for each day to keep focused on until the surgery)

I am going to do 2 questions today...tomorrow will be spent gathering up all items to take with me to the vet, and will be getting the house ready for when Jupe comes home.... possibly going to try to post some pictures later tonight or tomorrow :-D
So today’s questions are: How to distract Jupiter the night before surgery? I know he is going to be miserable not being able to eat after 6pm and will be on the search for food
and Any ideas of what I can do for the 24 hour period that Jupiter is at the vet for? I want to keep myself distracted as possible as I know I am going to be worried out of my mind that day.

Hi Jamie. The only thing I can suggest is for you to try and stay calm. If you get too worked up Jupiter will sense it and get excited also. Of course that is easier said than done. I'm sending lots of stay calm vines to you and Jupiter.

Have a great day Jamie and you've been doing a great job.

Hi Jamie! Is there anything that he particularly likes, like being brushed or watching nature shows on tv? Maybe just spend a little bit of time doing those things. It's funny, but I caught Nikki one day absolutely fascinated by Madagascar! Apparently she likes watching animated animals on tv. :-D

I think sitting and doing his favorite things is a great idea. While waiting, it might be a good idea to get out of the house. Staying home there is too much opportunity to sit and worry. I don't know what you like to do, a hike, a museum………

Hi Jamie,

Per our PM's the Bach Rescue Remedy should be to you tomorrow. Not everyone believes in the power of flower essences, but I hope you will give it a try - on both Jupiter and yourself.

Rescue Remedy, manufactured by Nelsons, contains five flower essences: Rock Rose to alleviate terror and panic, Impatiens to mollify irritation and impatience, ClematisStar of Bethlehem to ease shock, and Cherry Plum to calm irrational thoughts. Available in a convenient spray bottle or in drop form, it helps to provide better emotional balance and fast, convenient relief from everyday stress.

Keeping you and Jupiter close in my thoughts.

Distractions for yourself --

Now assuming that getting totally drunk and obliterated is not an option....

how about:

- going to the movies, renting a DVD and getting lost in that for a few hours
- do you have a favorite place that you like to go - like a park, beach (yes your landlocked) or hiking trail? go to a favorite place, do a favorite activity - like go for a long walk, bike ride, drive, etc.
- fill your head with music and lots of noise
- do you have a favorite book or author - reread a favorite or read a new book that you have been wanting to read and just don't have the time
- exercise - take yoga, meditation, tai chi, zumba, jazzercise class - will take your mind off things for an hour or two

and if all this fails - you can always try my first idea - get totally drunk!

Unfortunately due to the problems with my kidneys - I have pretty bad pain and I have a hard time moving around much. So anything "physical" is out.... Dane has to work that day, but after we drop Jupiter off at the vet(@8am) I will be dropping Dane off at work and I will be keeping the car with me during the day (Dane is done at work @ 4pm). I am going to have to go 25 hours without seeing Jupiter and I know I am going to be worried out of mind.

Now assuming that getting totally drunk and obliterated is not an option....

Trust me, I have already considered this option! Unfortunately, I dont think its a good idea either.

While Jupiter is at the vet's, can you think of someone else who's not feeling well, an older person who would appreciate a visit, a neighbor for whom you could do something kind, someone you could write a letter to, or a friend to take for coffee? Doing something kind for someone else is a great way to lift your spirits and make the time pass faster too.

Distractions for Jupiter:
Any favorite toys or games.
Do you have Animal Planet? Some cats like to watch that channel It might be worth a try.

Distractions for you:
Play with the other kitties. This has always helped me when any of my cats are in for a dental, etc.
Call a friend and talk for a while or go visit if someone is available.
If you like to get online and look things up, you could maybe research something.

Sending prayers for you, Jupiter and Dane.

today has been a rough day. jupiter doesnt even want to lay in the living room (where my bed is and he normally lays out here) because the crate is out here. :YMSIGH:

another thought for distraction -

how about volunteering at a kitty shelter for the day? or at a minimum visiting the kitties and/or goggies.
